To buy baby clothes from Ebay?

Long story short, I'm pregnant with my 3rd, baby isn't due til sept but we are absolutly broke, struggling to pay the rent let alone buy new baby things.

So I decided to start buying a few little things each week from ebay. I've bid on some babygrows and a pramsuit, both used but look lovely and clean.

I was casually telling a work colleague about it today and she turn her nose up when I told her I was getting stuff from ebay. She said she "would never put her baby in second hand clothes" and "you don't know where they've come from" she went on to go on about how baby clothes aren't really expensive anyway etc etc

Maybe I'm being over sensitive but she made me feel really bad, as though I was getting second best for my baby but the way I look at it is that the baby won't know or care and newborns are only in stuff for 5 minutes so even second hand stuff will have lots of wear left in them.

Like I said, maybe I am being over sensitive (pregnancy hormones are raging) but she has made me feel like I'm not doing the best for my baby.

Is it really so bad to get second hand clothes for a new baby?

I don't think there's anything wrong with it, presumably you're going to wash them before your baby uses them anyways.

And with the rate babys grow!!

Go for it!

AnarchyAunt · 27/01/2009 19:39

Nah course not. Everything DD had as a baby was second hand.

Colleague is a snob and a numpty.

differentID · 27/01/2009 19:39

Not bad at all. I'm assuming you're going to give it a good wash anyway before baby arrives, so it will be like using hand-me-downs.
Does your work colleague have dc herself?

PandaG · 27/01/2009 19:39

not at all. very sensible in my opinion. and more ethical.

LittleMissNorty · 27/01/2009 19:40

The bulk of my stuff is second-hand.

Some people are so up their own arses aren't they?

Take no notice......

mad4mybaby · 27/01/2009 19:40

goodness no! my ds2 is 9 weeks old and im going ti be putting all his newborn babygros/vests on ebay if your interested?

no point whatso ever buying 2ndhand!

Maveta · 27/01/2009 19:40

my sis gets all her baby clothes from ebay, apart from new clothes they are given as pressies and hand me downs. You would never know what was new and what was 2nd hand, they are worn for so little time and they don´t really get dirty, not when they´re little anyway.

Surfermum · 27/01/2009 19:41

No, it's absolutely fine and really sensible.

DD came home from hospital in a charity shop babygrow and coat which cost a total of 58p!

SmallShips · 27/01/2009 19:41

Ignore her, babies grow so fast, i know lots of people who can afford new baby clothes, but rather buy off ebay, local paper and even freecycle.

Clothes are clothes.

scorpio1 · 27/01/2009 19:41

Ebay for baby stuff is the best!

memoo · 27/01/2009 19:42

I will definately wash everything first.

My colleague does have DC but they are grown up now. I don't think she has ever been short of money, her DH is a GP, so not sure she knows what its like to have to watch every penny.

Tell her she's unreasonable - once washed the baby clothes could be brand new; you're doing your bit for recycling and saving money. And saving small children in sweat shops from having to produce more cheap clothes for us to wear once then throw away. I'm sure she'll see your point of view

Sazlocks · 27/01/2009 19:42

no way - most of DS stuff is from friends, NCT sales, bits from ebay and he always looks smart and well cared for !
She doesn't know what she is on about - as the others say most of the stuff is hardly worn anyway... and quite rightly you are spending the money you have on the things you really do need - like a roof over your head !

Legoleia · 27/01/2009 19:43

We had loads of second hand stuff and hand-me-downs for our (PFB) baby.

Although, sometimes with the postage from eBay, it actually works out cheaper to get stuff from the supermarket.

Second hand is much more eco-friendly though, of course!

Siriusmew · 27/01/2009 19:43

Everything I have for DS2 is second hand. Actually most of it has done 3/4 babies. There is nothing wrong with it.I think it's very sensible.

lindenlass · 27/01/2009 19:43

OMG YANBU but very sensible IMO!

I remember reading on a forum (not MN!) someone saying they didn't pass clothes on from their oldest to the next one and so on because it wasn't fair on each baby to not have new clothes . Like a baby's going to care!

My DD2 loves it when we get DD1's old clothes out for her to root through and try on

differentID · 27/01/2009 19:43

Then I really think she should pull her head out of her arse.
I hope one of her dc produces a baby very soon and then she'll know how much babies cost these days!

i must admit, i wouldn't put my new born in clothes that were bought from ebay.

izyboy · 27/01/2009 19:45

Oh well if she has money to burn! Tell her you are helping the environment!

Wonderstuff · 27/01/2009 19:45

I got most stuff for dd second hand, much more ethical and I got lovely stuff on ebay i wouldnt have been able to afford new.

LivingLaVidaLurker2 · 27/01/2009 19:45

I buy loads of children's clothes on ebay. You can get some brilliant bargains - especially when people sell in bundles.

Ignore your colleague - at least if she's not on ebay there are more bargains to be had for the rest of us.

And, rest assured, you are definitely doing the best for your baby.

memoo · 27/01/2009 19:46

Daftpunk, why???

OP posts:
seeker · 27/01/2009 19:46

I had breand new for the first couple of days (packets of supermarked sleepsuits) then straigh into hand-me-downs and charity shops. Your colleague is an arse.

eekamoose · 27/01/2009 19:46

Your colleague is a very silly billy indeed. Not only for having such a snobbish and outdated attitude, but also for saying so in front of you so insensitively. She sounds like a complete belter tbh.

Second hand clothes for babies is better.
