little cars are the spawn of the devil....................

..........there, I have said it.

I HATE little cars with a passion previously reserved for dog walkers who fail to pick up dog poo............I have now got a new rant!!!

OMG, you drive along, feeling as tho you are scraping the road with your bum, feel small next to proper cars, teeny next to MPV's, teeny tiny next to 4x4, and impossibly insignificant next to trucks/lorries/juganauts.

and THEN, you cannot get out of the car looking all swish, you damn near have to ROLL out the car onto the pavement/road cos you are so near to the fucking floor.

I HATE little cars.

AND................

I HATE my DH's car even more, cos it leaks thru the fucking sun-roof and not only am I scraping the road with my bum, I am wet through too.

little cars should be scrapped, and we should all be given cars that make you feel like a real person.

rant over........I feel better now

Well exactly OrmIrian!

If you need parking sensors, then you obviously haven't got a sense of where your car starts and ends.

On a really serious note, I am shocked at some of the near misses I've seen in built up areas, especially around school run time, with little kids coming out of school etc. It's a sad fact that the less confident and competent drivers do sometimes end up driving a vehicle which is too big and powerful for them to manage. I've seen some near misses with reversing, and the frightening thing is, the driver has been oblivious.

psychomum5 · 22/01/2009 10:01

well.....I have had three big crashes.

one in a cavalier, and two in a huge white previa.

none my fault

and each time, was told by the person hitting me that they didn;t see me.

now, exactly how you miss a bigger car, and especially a huge white bus of a car is still a mystery to me!

OP posts:
psychomum5 · 22/01/2009 10:03

actually violet, I do have a sense, it is just easier. tis the first ever car I have owned with sensors......and I admit it is making me lazy.

I was a good parker before tho.....even DH used to get me to park, and that is a bog thing for a man to admit to

OP posts:
youknownothingofthecrunch · 22/01/2009 10:03

Just wanted to add an enormously superstitious "Touch wood" to my previous post what was I thinking? Guaranteed to crash now

The idea of reversing without keeping eyes firmly on the direction I'm moving is terrifying! You're still supposed to look, even with sensors.

youknownothingofthecrunch · 22/01/2009 10:04

Can I ask what the cars that crashed into you were, Psycho? Were the big or small?

veedub · 22/01/2009 10:06

Why should cars be a neccessity and not a pleasure? After giving up drinking , smoking and any other general debauchery when kids came along, cars ARE my pleasure!

CandleQueen · 22/01/2009 10:06

I used to have a Smart car. Best thing I've ever driven, and I could run it on pocket money! So easy to park, visibility was great and you were higher up than some small cars so no bum-scraping!
Had to give it up for a car that could fit babies in though...

psychomum5 · 22/01/2009 10:06

all normal sized IIRC.

last car was a manky mazda

OP posts:
Divineintervention · 22/01/2009 10:11

I can park, have parking sensors but have to go beyond the beeeeeep for a tight spot....
I have only had crashes in sports cars so both small, not the driver's fault either but in one instance it was an old lady in a small car driving into the sun on a country lane, the other a guy pulling out in front of us in a peugot 206!!

CandleQueen · 22/01/2009 10:16

My dad pushes his parking sensors to the limit. Beep......beep.......beep...beep...beep...beep...beepbeepbeepbeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!
I almost expect the thing to pipe up with "STOP THE F*ING CAR!!!"

youknownothingofthecrunch · 22/01/2009 10:17

Damn

Hypothesis unproven so far!

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 22/01/2009 10:17

YABU I LOVE my little teeny car! It does probably depend what type though, there are definitely some 'orrible little cars out there but mine is sweet, nippy, great to park and I do not feel like my bum is on the road at all! Though I am starting to feel like sometime I will have to swap it for a 4-door, esp. if any more DCs come along I hate big enormous cars that take up the whole road and don't fit in parking spaces properly, and they will generally be worse for the environment than a little light one too.

NotADragonOfSoup · 22/01/2009 10:22

I have a Renault Laguna. Whilst it was in for repair, I was given a courtesy car. A Fiat Panda into which I had to fit 3 children in 2 boosters and a 1st stage carseat and a pram. I had to drive with my knees virtually up by my ears it was so small. I felt so vulnerable next to buses and lorries [shudder]. By the end of the week I was kind of fond of it though - it was very nippy

The worst thing was that it did not come with "XX garage Courtesy Car" plastered all over it and everyone kept asking me whether I had a new car!

mysterymoniker · 22/01/2009 10:26

little cars are cool!

I drive a defender 99% of the time but my actual car (off the road at the moment awaiting some TLC) is a 206cc and it's great to be so close to the road. My daughter has a Ka and I love hurtling around country roads in that, it's impossible to lose the back end even on the most precarious bends.

YAB resoundingly U

laweaselmys · 22/01/2009 10:32

I wish I had a smart car. Seriously. Then, when we drive down our street looking for somewhere to park and there are four or five half-a-car sized spaces, we could fit in one!!

Don't know where DD would go but still... I live with the constant fantasy of ever parking outside our actual house.

youknownothingofthecrunch · 22/01/2009 10:39

I learnt to drive in a defender and a peugeot 205 (an interesting combination) and the feeling of power being that far above cars is undoubtable. I used to feel like I could drive right over them and I'd be fine. Is that a good thing? That feeling of being indestructible and powerful? Surely it's better to be in a car where you are actually aware of the dangers of your own, and others', driving? Not scared by any means, but aware. Because you are not safe in a big car - and you're certainly more of a danger to anyone else in a crash.

I've got to stop thinking about this. Psycho, my musings are general and not at all personal, just so you know

flaminhell · 22/01/2009 10:40

I think small cars are the devil, you cant see them when you go to park, they hide behind the normal sized, and previously thought of small cars, thus making my seconds glee at having actually found a space turn to disappointment to find said small car taking up, my space!!

Also they are bloody dangerous, I would not drive one, no way no how, too many big beefy motors around that could easily squash you to the size of a coke can, and while we are on it, people drive these little cars like they are noddy cars, or bumper cars, they just saunter along taking up the middle lane, doing 60 mph, causing traffic jams.

Damn those little cars, damn those tiny little people who fit into those little cars, and damn those tiny cars with little people who have time on there hands to saunter.

A plague on all those little cars houses!!

Oh I became slightly theatrical there, so to answer you question. YANBU.

I like smaller cars. Have never driven anything really tiny though, but our current car is humungous estate. When parking, the width isn't really the problem - the car is just too darn long. (DH chose it. I will say no more.)

While on the subject may I say that I also hate cars with too many gadgets. This comes from someone who used to drive a car with more lights than a Christmas tree and every computery gimmick under the sun. Then I got a basic Golf SDI. I think a cup-holder was the only noticeable refinement, and it was the best car ever. If I was hot I just rolled down the windows, and what's more, I could play all my old cassettes in it (though not with the windows open or at full volume, naturally!)

psychomum5 · 22/01/2009 10:54

lol flaminhell.......see.....another one as irrational vehiment(sp?) as me

OP posts:
psychomum5 · 22/01/2009 10:57

actually.....there is one teeny car I still have a soft spot for, and that is mini's. yeah yeah, I know, a teeny as they get, but my first car was a mini, and yes it tried to kill me more times than I have fingers on one hand, but I loved it, it was mine, and it could be parked anywhere.

but then, I was 17, I was child-free, and I was invincable

OP posts:
Poledra · 22/01/2009 11:01

No, no, no Psycho. How can a big car be anywhere near as much fun to drive as a nippy little one? I have a Ford Galaxy to fit the DDs in, and it handles like it's driving in custard. Now, my 306 I had many moons ago......

Divineintervention · 22/01/2009 11:02

I loved my mini clubman...I took move the gear stick right out of gear and then just put the clutch down and tap to change!

OrmIrian · 22/01/2009 11:05

veedub - because privately owned cars are going to become more untenable as pollution and congestion increases. At least your drinking and smoking didn't impact on others. And lets face it it's damned expensive to drive. We gave up one car as soon as DH changed his job when we no longer needed it. If I could manage without any I would _ we'd be so much better off. And there's damn little pleasure to be had stuck on crowded roads and traffic jams.
