to think that dog poo should always be picked up?

Because I'm getting sick of going for walks with MIL, her little dog doing poops and her saying, "Oh, you can't see that, it's in the roots of a tree,", me saying, "But a child could fall in that. It's disgusting." I once even said, "What kind of a pig leaves dog shit lying around?" but it's the same every time.

She just doesn't get it. I get really annoyed because each of my DCs have fallen with their hands in poop and it's the most disgusting thing ever.

I totally agree, no pets means no poo. I hate cat's poo even more because it's in MY GARDEN!!!

Ingles2 · 22/01/2009 10:01

you're right about cats... I guess people don't think it's the same because cat's try and bury their poo. They never seem to manage it though and if you don't have a cat it's horrible.
All town cats should have a litter tray I think.

WinkyWinkola · 22/01/2009 10:01

Yes, cats are a problem with the fact that they roam and deposit poo willy nilly.

I do ask my neighbours if there's any cat poo in their garden, I'm happy to come and clear it up because I've got three cats and it's probably one of them. Obviously I can't go round every house in our street clearing up the cat poo!

But I think we will not have any pets again because I can't be doing with this poo business.

higgle · 22/01/2009 10:07

My view ( very responsible dog owner, I think) Absoloutely in street, parks, regularly used footpaths and fields often used by families, certainly not in open countryside miles from anywhere. I always carry wet wipes and extra bags and gloves too as if dog is a bit squittery you need to wipe pavement clean, not just scoop.

NigellaTufnel · 22/01/2009 10:12

When people deign to pick up their poo round here - which is rare - they put it in a bag and leave it on the pavement.

Hanging's too good for them.

I am usually a wet liberal about all things but after trying to teach a toddler to walk on the 'Jobby Gauntlet' that is out street, I get a bit peeved.

Marthasmama · 22/01/2009 10:13

I wish you were my neighbour Winky. I have so much cat poo in my garden because there are loads of cats in the area. My mum's garden is even worse. My DS really enjoys gardening with Granny but a cat has pooed all over and dug up the flowers he chose and planted. It makes feel very sad. My granny caught a cat pooing in her garden so she swung it round by the tail and threw it over the garden wall! !

NigellaTufnel · 22/01/2009 10:17

And I had to deal with a gobby young middle class couple* who had their little ratty dog on the slide of the children's playground. Because it was 'cute'.

This was in a children's enclosure of a dog free park, where there is a dog friendly park five minutes walk away.

I got a sarcastic "I hope you have a nice day" and some sneering. And my DH saying I made a fuss. Too right I did. It's disgusting to have that dogs bum sliding up and down where the local kids are playing

Give them 10 years until they have kids. Ha!

*I am also screamingly middle class.

Stayingsunnygirl · 22/01/2009 10:18

There are plants you can put in your garden that are off-putting to cats, because they don't like the smell - I'm sorry I can't remember the names right now.

You can also buy a deterrent made of lion poo to put in your garden - if I remember the info correctly we can't smell it (otherwise there'd be no point using it) but cats can - and they won't come in the garden if they think they might be eaten by a lion.

If I saw, or was told, that my cat had poo'd in someone else's garden, I'd offer to clean it up - but as cats roam far and wide, it isn't easy to keep tabs on every single poo.

mysterymoniker · 22/01/2009 10:21

also orange peel, toy rubber snakes and those 'angry cat' silhouette things can all deter cats from pooing in your garden

not that I mind about cat poo either

why don't I mind about this stuff? is there something wrong with me?

at Ingles' chat with farmer. I will endeavour to repeat. I wonder if I dare ask him if he worms his dogs...

ipanemagirl · 22/01/2009 12:23

Those anti cat things don't work! We've tried them all, we're surrounded by cats in our area which is a real shame because it effects the bird life.
It's very hard to know who owns which cat, lucky because my dh said if he knew which cat belonged where he'd happily go and take a great shite on their doorstep and ask them if they saw any moral difference!
We now have one of those cat alarm/sirens that apparently people can't here which costs us about a fiver a month in batteries. We've spent a ton on all those other useless things none of which have worked. I'm glad I'm having to pay to keep the little crapping fur balls out of my garden so other people can have pets who never ever ever poo anywhere do they? I guess the poo evaporates in the air like Fairy Poo!!!

My dh would get a gun if it were legal to shoot other peoples pets.

I have to say I think pet owning without responsibility is just a hugely childish self indulgent thing.

ipanemagirl · 22/01/2009 12:25

Obviously he would only shoot them if they were crapping in our garden! But he'd like dog owning to be illegal except for working dogs... I slightly agree, there are just too many bad dog owners, they entirely swamp the good ones.
Ban 'em all except for working dogs and dogs on LAND . Put cats in petting zoos.
How can anyone have three cats, why would you want so many?

WinkyWinkola · 22/01/2009 12:48

Well, I've got three because they were abandoned and we just ended up with them. They're ok. Quite fun and friendly.

Pets bring people a lot of happiness though, don't they? And possibly health? I know there are lots of pet owners who aren't responsible but wouldn't you say the majority were?

There's far less dog poo about than when I was a kid.

I can't speak for cat poo!

georgiemum · 22/01/2009 12:54

Next time you go to her house make sure you bring in a little present on the sole of your shoe.

ipanemagirl · 22/01/2009 13:55

But lots of things are 'nice' that I don't do because of the consequences to other people. I quite like getting a little smashed very occasionally but don't because I'm breaastfeeding. I quite like cats but I love in a very built up area and I don't think it's acceptable to have my pet crapping in everyone else's garden so I forego that pleasure.

I do love dogs actually but I grew up with a perfectly trained dog who was bought up to be a guard dog when we were living in the middle of the countryside. My mother was often alone so she wanted a guard dog. But it only crapped where it was trained to crap, and not on public highways. A trained dog is not the same thing as most of the gallumphing fur balls you see pulling their owners around by the lead and out of control. These dogs are just obnoxious and anti social but you can't say anything because people are irrational about their pets!

It is perfectly possible to train dogs. only about 1% of people seem to realise this. It's because they're not really rational imo, the pet is a kind of mobile soft toy, bought as an indulgence without nearly enough thought about the consequences to other people.

How many times do you go to a dog owners house and the dog jumps all over you and licks you etc (which I fiind disgusting) and the owner just goes "Oh don't worry, he/she is so friendly he/she won't bite" and you have to go to the loo to towell off the slobber and check your clothes haven't been ruined! And the cheek of some owners! A friend of mine who's irritating little yapper jumps all over you when you visit tells you off for not being firmer and telling it to get down NO! You're the owner - you train the bloody thing! It's not my dog!

Forgive the rant - I just think this nation should grow up and stop the pet selfishness!

ipanemagirl · 22/01/2009 13:56

Sorry LIVE (and love...) in a built up area!

abraid · 22/01/2009 15:15

I absolutely agree that there is much less dog poo on pavements these days, thank God. I can remember frequently getting it on my shoes when I was walking to see my friends as a primary school child. It was completely revolting.

I think more - but then I lived in a small village as a child aeons ago, with fewer people and fewer dogs. Now we live in a suburb and back onto a forest trail. All very lovely, but for some, the idea of picking it up at all is beyond them; for others, as long as it's not actually ON the trail is fine. Just beside the path means it's OK to leave it

abraid · 22/01/2009 17:53

We have one annoying dog owner who lets a dog each morning to poo right on the narrow pavement by the school entrance.

Lovely.

upnorth · 22/01/2009 18:01

The other problem is alot of people let their children take their dogs out and the kids never want to pick up poo.

paolosgirl · 22/01/2009 19:36

That's very true, upnorth. It does not look 'cool' to pick up dog poo, esp. if you are 14, walking the dog under duress and the bloke you fancy has just appeared.

pocketmonster · 22/01/2009 21:44

Its disgusting! I had 2 dogs - both sadly dead now - and I always picked up their poo and took it home and put it in the bin.

We have started having regular deposits of dog shit outside our house - it really really p*** me off, if I see the person who's dog it is I will blummin tell them. My 3 year old DD seems to be attracted to it and always steps in it - vile.

We also went kite flying a couple of weeks ago, and DD1 and her kite got covered in the biggest stinkiest dog poo I had ever seen. There were signs everywhere telling owners to pick up after their dogs but there was poo absolutely everywhere - we had to throw her kite away - it was a christmas present so she was really upset.

The council needs to start penalising dog owners who don't pick up in the same way they ticket anybody parked on a double yellow line. That would soon encourage people to pick up.

Quattrocento · 22/01/2009 21:46

I am militant about this issue - quite scarily aggressive. To the point of going up and challenging a very scarey man walking two rottweilers and telling him to scoop the poop.
