I would expect teachers in schools to be able to do it.

But I am perhaps missing something.

I dont do anything unless I know I am going to be good at it Violet - I therefore wouldnt attempt to teach my child English unless I thought I knew my subject (which I blatantly dont)

I get all my correspondence from the school by e-mail and I cant believe how much is covered in green & red squiggles where they obviously havent used the spell checker - how long does that take?

You can igore it though cant you, that at least removes the squiggles

MarmadukeScarlet · 21/01/2009 12:53

WW, doesn't that norrow your horizons somewhat?

I didn't know I was going to be good at rockclimbing, but I gave it my best shot and enjoy it very much although I am a long way from being 'good'.

Ditto horseriding (actually quite good at that) skiing (average ability) singing (haven't been asked to leave choir yet, but not actually much good) parenting (must try harder) etc.

And if their English Teacher at school has a degree in Art (for example - before all the Artists stone me), how would she be better at spelling and grammar than me?

But ... I'm assuming you think she would be a more suitable teacher than me?

Simplysally · 21/01/2009 13:14

I believe people taking Art degrees still have to write extensive essays. It's not all sitting around painting or sculpting.

I'd have done Art if I could have drawn more than the curtains.

WilyWombat · 21/01/2009 13:20

LOL I was obviously under some misapprehension that the subject they were qualified in was also the subject they taught...why would you get a degree in art then teach English?

"I'm assuming you think she would be a more suitable teacher than me?" you are assuming wrong then as I have no idea who you are

Not me is it? LOL (no, not HE'ing atm)

I have terrible emails yet was never pulled up once in my degree on grammar etc (and yes they did fail people on that).

I am actually rather good at spelling, grammar etc

And MN is my break so I don't care

Could be the same for target of OP?

BTW most Uni's ask for a 2:1 to teach (in my subject anyway) and no you cannot teach with a third unless theya dmit you with special credit- eg life experience.

2:2 degree holders are admitted on same basis.

PlainOldPeachy · 21/01/2009 13:26

Spellcheckers are crap btw

friend was boasting last weekend about how she doesn't need to be able to spell these days as there is spellcheck

Yes, but that didn,t pick up that you spelled minutes Minuets did it? (Dh emailed her to ask if she enjoyed dansing to the records of the meeting but straight over her head)- and it didn't pick up wrong form of there, or any of a thousand other errors

(beofre anyone picks me up on my posts I have baby in one arm and cant find my glasses LOL )

It's the SPAG that makes my teeth itch (although it took me a second to work out that that wasn't referring to an Italian meat dish ).
Having said that, if I were to put my neck on the line, I find it a little strange that teachers have to be qualified (with all the usual caveats of some not being great at SPAG etc etc), and don't need any qualifications to HE.
Just voicing my opinion, and lord knows am far from being an expert on either, and am wearing a rubber, bouncable suit......(like a gimp suit in fact!)

What's MFL?

I would say rather than thick it means the standard to get a 2:2 is hihger than my degree? (coz we had some thickies!).

PlainOldPeachy · 21/01/2009 13:41

Oh I see (googled it)

well we're both shortage subjects, but yours is very much more so, so that's why I guess: only way they can get applicants?

I think ther easons for HE dictate the choice in many cases so you will get a mix.

I know several religious types for example, and quite a few SN home educators who cannot get a decent school place- we were doing that for a bit.

But of all the HE types I know, only one doesn't have a decent degree (or more) and she has her own busines and is married to a Physics Prof.

AmIOdetteOrOdile · 21/01/2009 13:52

I can send you a picture if you like Butterfly!!!

I am finding this interesting actually, and particularly the different reasons to HE.

I think most places stipulate a 2:2 for graduate job applications as it would be unreasonable to ask for a 2:1 or above unless you are a really-top end employer and pay accordingly, as relatively fewer people (used to) achieve those types of classifications.

If I was pursuing the field I graduated in, I would barely get a heads-up with my 2:2 but I'm happy with it.

KayHarkerIsNotAnAuthority · 21/01/2009 14:00

We will all spk txt in the end. Is evolutchun.

MilaMae · 21/01/2009 14:06

What does MFL mean? I've been out of teaching(primary) 5 years my 2:2 was always good enough before-is that not the case now-worried!!!!!

MilaMae · 21/01/2009 14:14

Im aware my punctuation was completely wrong below-kids rampaging.

Feenie · 21/01/2009 14:16

Modern Foreign Languages. One of which is now has to be taught in primary schools!

nickschick · 21/01/2009 14:19
