To think a cleaner should be able to use a Dyson?

I paid for someone to clean my house (5 months pregnant and not flush so it was a bit of an extravagance to be honest)
Apparently my house is so filthy she managed to only clean the bathroom, ensuite and half do the lounge and kitchen in 4 hours...but here is the clincher....she didn't hoover my stairs (the most important bit for me!) as she couldn't figure out how to operate a F*** dyson......

Em don't you just plug it in and switch it on?

Pan · 20/01/2009 23:50

could you not show her??

tessofthedurbervilles · 21/01/2009 13:38

Problem I had was was working so left her too it....stupid me lesson learned....grrrrr but she really should get another vocation if a hoover confuses her its kinda a tool of the job!

I have a Dyson and to be honest it is a bit of a pain detaching the tube bit but she should be able to get around large areas of floor without too much trouble (assuming it is an upright like mine).

Geepers · 21/01/2009 13:42

The upright Dyson is a pain in the arse. I'd rather remove my eyeballs with a teaspoon than use one.

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 21/01/2009 13:47

I have a Dyson, but don't even know how to switch my mum's Dyson on!!!!

I agree with Geepers the upright is a pain the arse.

YABU. Show her next time.

nickytamoshantertwotimes · 21/01/2009 13:49

I've worked as a cleaner in my time, but never used a Dyson. My mil's confuses the hell out of me. You need to show her, but I guess you know this now!

tessofthedurbervilles · 21/01/2009 13:51

It is a pain but I said 'If you do nothing else please do the stairs as I am pg and can't and call me if you need anything'
I am just gutted that my treat for myself ended in someone taking the p*ss out of me and taking my money without doing the full 4 hours I had paid her for!

Yes, she definitely could have done a lot more in 4 hours.

Guess you'll not be using her services again then?

poshwellies · 21/01/2009 13:53

YABU

Agree with others, you could of shown her. There are lots of us that get flummoxed with new fiddly appliances.

VinegarTits · 21/01/2009 13:58

4 hours, i could clean my whole house twice over in that time

ok my house is only a 2up 2 down, but not a tiny one, fairly big ex council house. So 4 rooms, half an hour on each room (including hovering and mopping floors)

I think she has taken the piss imvho

ThePellyandMe · 21/01/2009 14:07

She should have done more in 4 hours but as for the Dyson, took me about an hour to figure out my new one. That was with the instruction manual.

DH still asks how to detach the hose everytime he uses it

Poppycake · 21/01/2009 14:24

I don't know what sort of Dyson you have, but neither of mine have been complicated (the most complicated bit I think is how to take it apart to empty, but even that isn't rocket science). And I'm allergic to instruction booklets.

I must admit the cleaner who comes to us is extraordinary and wonderful, but to give you an idea - she comes once a week for four hours: she vacuums our whole house, changes our beds, cleans upstairs and downstairs bathrooms, cleans kitchen (plus empties and reloads the dishwasher), dusts, tidies and gets through a load of ironing. If we've been particularly unmanky one week, she does something extra like cleaning the downstairs windows. She is also a really lovely person, so I know I'm very lucky to have found her. But it shows how little yours got done in comparison! I would not use her again, tbh. Annoying to have spent the money, tho.

cookinmama · 21/01/2009 14:30

I think you are definitely NOT BU. If someone says that they are a cleaner then they should know how to use the tools of their trade. It's like a joiner coming round and not putting up the shelf because he doesn't know how to switch the drill on!!!

belgo · 21/01/2009 14:33

YANBU. She should know how to use the dyson.

But that sounds like a reasonable amount of work she has done, if she has done it well.

chocolatedot · 21/01/2009 15:02

Bit confused about this Dyson thing - don't you just press the on switch? In 4 hours our cleaner can comfortably do a large kichen, 2 sitting rooms and at least 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.

We had our house cleaned for 4 hours when our baby was small. The cleaner hoovered everywhere, mopped, cleaned the windows, the blinds, walls, took everything out of the kitchen cupboards and cleaned inside, did the bathroom, washed up, hung out the washing, made the beds, made me a cup of tea, and offered me some breastfeeding advice plus a big bag of baby clothes and toys for free.

I'm so lucky.

Jenbot · 21/01/2009 16:15

(Oh, not that that has anything to do with your question about the dyson.)

Were you at home while she was there?

mylifemykids · 21/01/2009 16:39

Is nobody else amused by the 'please do the stairs as I am pg and can't'

BlameItOnTheBogey · 21/01/2009 16:45

YANBU. Quite aside from the not being able to use a dyson thing, it's a ridiculously small amount to get through in 4 hours. We have a cleaner and she; cleans two bathrooms, three bedrooms, kitchen and living room and does all our ironing in three hours. She does a bloody good job too.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 21/01/2009 16:46

Hmm yes, but we don't know the whole story, so play nice.

But when I was pregnant last time I daily carted a child, pushchair and shoppping etc up stairs. Oh and hand sanded and varnished said stairs and bannisters.

Pan · 21/01/2009 17:56

Maybe the house was particularly filthy, and it DID take her hours to do a modest amount..and she was looking for a pretext to never having to clean up again......
