to put a small notice on my door saying "Newborn baby in house. Sales/Surveys etc please don't ring/knock"

MamaG · 16/01/2009 14:17

I don't technically have a newborn in the house, he's 10 weeks old

AND he'd sleep through a brass band marching through the house playing at full volume

I just get fecked off with the door going when I'm sat feeding him! I always go answer it in case its a friend/delivery or something and I feel so annoyed when its some twat "oh hello I'm doing a survey on..."

fuck off!

Would IBU to put said notice on door?

Ds2 is a year old next week, but I might put a sign up saying that anyway!!

GrimmaTheNome · 16/01/2009 14:18

The only thing wrong with this idea is it should be a BIG notice!

Songbird · 16/01/2009 14:19

Do it!

mrsmaidamess · 16/01/2009 14:20

You are under no obligation to open your door. Or answer your phone. Why do people feel they have to jump up the minute someone knocks or rings? I do it at MY convenience, not theres. A friend can always call back.

ThornyRose · 16/01/2009 14:21

YANBU. I was a courier driver and often saw signs like this with details where to leave parcel so I wouldnt have to knock

mumoverseas · 16/01/2009 14:21

YANBU, what a bloody good idea! Shame the same approach can't be used to field bloody telesales people.
oh, and congratulations on your not so new newborn

PuppyMonkey · 16/01/2009 14:25

I know lots of people who have a notice about no salespeople or free newspapers etc. I think you can even buy proper printed up ones!

None of them have babies either!

honeybehappy · 16/01/2009 14:26

YANBU! what a fab idea.

Mercy · 16/01/2009 14:28

Not at all.

Evne pre-children I made up a sign fro the front door which said no salespeople or religious callers.

Granny22 · 16/01/2009 14:32

Neighbour who worked night shift had one of these notices. I have seen the newborn ones when out canvassing (political party) and always respect the notices even when they have obviously been there for a year or more.

onadietcokebreak · 16/01/2009 15:19

I did this....mainly so I could get my sleep whilst the baby slept.

And when the stupid salesman ignored it...I was not happy!

Lulumama · 16/01/2009 15:20

i;ve done this before now.. esp. when the DCs have been ill. it works!

not unreasonable at all

crokky · 16/01/2009 15:22

It's fine - I'd put "Young baby in house, please don't disturb unless essential"

quickdrawmcgraw · 16/01/2009 15:23

Look on my profile to see the pic of the sign I made. It was on permently.

ilovetochat · 16/01/2009 15:24

i wish i had put one up saying "mother and baby resting please do not knock" and it wasn't just sales people i wanted to deter, bloody family came in droves all day every day for weeks.

iwouldgoouttonight · 16/01/2009 15:29

Definitely not unreasonable - we have one on our door that our local nosey parker neighbourhood watch man gave to everyone. It says something like no cold calling or doorstep sellers.

Having said that, when I was on maternity leave last time I got so bored and starved of adult company I actually invited survey people in for a cup of tea and wouldn't let them leave!

scrappydappydoo · 16/01/2009 15:52

YANBU - do it now!
A friend of mine was a midwife and went to visit a week old baby, they had a similar sign and when she knocked on the door the bloke opened a window and gave her a barrage of abuse until she explained who she was - he was very . She toold me to put a sign on my door for at least first 3 months...

solidgoldsoddingjanuaryagain · 16/01/2009 15:58

YANBU, put a sign up. Make it a good cover-al-the bases one.
I say this as someone who does the door-knocking for market research companies. I would much rather see a sign and leave someone alone than knock and get a mouthful of abuse.
(And I know that plenty of people's default position is 'Go away' but there are a reasonable number of people who are bored and don't mind giving you 20 minutes or so of their time).

Highlander · 16/01/2009 17:28

After a horrible experience with DS1, I put a sign on the door when I had DS2:

Mum and new baby are very tired. Please don't even think about knocking unless you've phoned to make an appointment!

I told tghe postman and the Hv to just ignore it.

solidgoldsoddingjanuaryagain · 16/01/2009 17:33

THere are signs you can get that say 'No salespeople/No canvassers' but a lot of canvassers are actually told by their bosses to ignore the simpler ones. I think police stations issue the one which says something along the lines of We Do Not Buy Or Sell on the doorstep, Callers By Appointment Only.

BabyStarlightsMum · 16/01/2009 17:34

LOL You don't HAVE to answer. I very often don't.

If I'm particularly hacked off I'll open it with a baby in my arms and my boob hanging out. For some reason I have no shame with DC2.

mm22bys · 16/01/2009 18:46

I got told off by a visitor yesterday for not answering the door, she does have her own key....

I wasn't expecting her for another half hour, and I didn't hear her knock (three times apparently...).

I told her so too, and also that I don't ignore people when they knock!

YANBU, your situation is slightly different though!

jasper · 16/01/2009 19:07

what a great idea!

jasper · 16/01/2009 19:07

I am considering it and my youngest is 6.

bluebump · 16/01/2009 19:09

Do it! It's the only time i've not minded that our doorbell is still broken, now I just need a phone that I can put on silent...
