to think that if you like a baby name you shouldn't worry if a celeb has used it?

Is it just me or is worrying about whether a celeb has used a baby name you like a waste of time?

Surely it's only an issue if you have the same last name too?

i just don't understand it.

It means that the name will become more popular so if you want an unusual name it is the kiss of death

apuppydaviesisforlife · 01/01/2009 18:27

more to the point people will think you admire and want to emulate said celebrity

nbee84 · 01/01/2009 18:29

My friend named her little boy Harry as she'd always liked that name and had an uncle Harry. The following year the Harry Potter books and film became very popular and there are now about 2 or 3 Harry's in each nursery/reception class. Though she still loves his name she thinks it is a shame there are so many.

The name Ruby was quite unusual until we had Ruby in Eastenders and the Kaiser Cheifs had a hit with 'Ruby'

AuntieMaggie · 01/01/2009 18:31

But in reality most associations won't last for long will they?

I've got a friend who wants to use Archie but because of the current Eastenders character is put off. I just don't understand it when in reality the character won't be around for the reast of the child's life.

I think it is a concern if the name in question is, say, Zowie. Or Moon Unit.

....otherwise who would know or care? I for one would not recognise many minor 'celebrities' names, let alone those of their issue...

....and the name Archie would make me think (if of anything at all) of...

(a) Cary Grant

(b) A ventriloquist act on the wireless

I believe 'Eastenders' to be a television programme thingy. A bit like Emmerdale Farm. Didn't the pub landlord fall out with his wife at Christmas or something?

Podrick · 01/01/2009 19:00

I proposed Zebedee and folk thought I was mad

RustyBear · 01/01/2009 19:00

I called DD what I thought was an unusual name, not realising that a celeb couple had called their daughter the same name a few months previously.

It's since become so popular, I've seen it denounced as 'chavvy' on here a few times, and of course I got a lot of 'Oh, did you name her after X's daughter'

I have also had a couple of comments along the lines of 'You don't look like someone who'd call her daughter that' - not sure quite what I was supposed to look like

I still like it though, which is what matters.

BouncingTurtle · 01/01/2009 19:04

My ds is Daniel. Someone asked me yesterday if I named him after the Harry Potter actor.

DH and I just looked at them blankly and said, er no we called him that because we happened to like the name!

It is the first time in just over a year anyone has asked that question though!

giantsantasacks · 01/01/2009 19:10

I know a zebedee podrick...this is of little use or interest isnt it...

jennieflower · 01/01/2009 19:13

We named DS Jude, I don't think it's particularly unusual but whenever we tell anyone his name they always comment, usually "Was that after Jude Law?"

giantsantasacks · 01/01/2009 19:17

jennieflower - do you not look down your nose at them and say that you're a big Hardy fan?that would shut them up...

stickybeaker · 01/01/2009 19:18

Being asked if it's after Jude Law would be much better than after Judith Chalmers

Zebedee makes me think of the Magic Roundabout! How old am I? Time for bed ...

PaulaatMummyKnowsBest · 01/01/2009 19:37

My youngest is called Harrison

We always get asked what we will call him as he has "such" an unusual name WTF???

A name is just a name (unless you do something really silly and call him Adolf Hitler )

Gorionine · 01/01/2009 19:43

What would be terrible would be to choose a nice name for your child an then a celebrity names his/her child the same to try and emulate you!

Thomcat · 01/01/2009 19:44

Ridiculous.
Likes the name Archie but becasue some bloke in Eastenders is named Archie she's put off!
Madness!
My youngest is called Sadie and when I mentioned it on here, Mumsnetters said 'oh what as in Sadie Frost, oh no' Wtf! No, not as in Sadie Frost, it's not her name and her name alone. It's Sadie as in Sadie and I'm calling my DD it because I like it. Couldn't give a flying toss who else might be called Sadie and whether a pap has ever taken their photo or not!

CharleeinChains · 01/01/2009 19:46

My friend is called Jude and he was named after the song 'Hey Jude'.

Someone was asking the opinion of the name Hiedi on here earlier ( a name i love) and it only took 3 posts before someone said 'thats Kerry K's daughters name'

I think unless it really is that unusual someone else will have that name to.

chipsandtart · 01/01/2009 19:46

my youngest ds is called chester like davina mcalls youngest and everyone always tells us so.
you pick a name cos you like it not cos a celeb has used it

CharleeinChains · 01/01/2009 19:49

Although i am uber sad and have told dp that if our next child is another boy we are calling it Wade Walker (then our sir name) after Cry Baby.

I generally don't give a toss though who i meet and what they say about our choice of names.

Kitteh · 01/01/2009 20:13

Im so not up to celeb gossip.. i wouldt have a clue if i called my baby after some famous persons child.. so long as it wasnt apple.. or princess tiammi or whatever it is..

MillyR · 01/01/2009 20:15

I think Daniel is lovely and think there are not enough Daniels around; the connection with HP would not have occurred to me.

There are a lot of Judes at the moment, but it is a lovely name and people will have forgotten about Jude Law in twenty years.
