To think that a play kitchen is a great present...

for a boy?

i think it is fine, my grandad thinks its girly, we tried telling that some of the top chefs are male, but would he listen!!!

This very generous birthday present is from my Dsister, and my grandad was taking the mickey out of her present right in front of her, which i consider to be rude.

Its actually turned out to be DS' favourite toy because it has noisy buttons and cups he can pretend to drink from

And a hand blender likes to stick to his ear and then say 'hiya'

It's a wonderful present for a boy. My DS would LOVE one, if only we had the space. He always plays with them in the toyshops. We have had to make do with a teaset! Your grandad is being very odd.

MotherChristmas2OliverJames · 29/12/2008 16:26

He is the same with woman drivers and is predudiced against everything

i put it down to him being close to his sell by.

My son loves his play kitchen. His dad is a chef, so my son wants to be one too when he grows up - although whenever you ask him what he is "cooking" in his kitchen, the answer is always the same - soup! I think it is a fab present.

BakewellTarts · 29/12/2008 16:26

Fantastic gift...boys need to know how to cook as well as girls and I think playing with kitchens is a good start.

BouncingTinsel · 29/12/2008 16:28

My DSS had one - he specifically asked for it! And my ds plays with the one at nursery.

So no YADNBU!

NAB3hundredChristmaslights · 29/12/2008 16:30

My DS got a kitchen last christmas and a different one this year and he loves it. Along with his washer, hoover, etc

georgimama · 29/12/2008 16:31

YANBU.

My mum has one which she bought in a charity shop, DS and DN both love it. I was going to get DS one for Christmas but will get one for his birthday instead (he will be 2).

tessofthedurbervilles · 29/12/2008 16:32

Ignore the out of touch old dear....whatever he enjoys is fine and it encourages him to pursue whatever interests he wants as he gets older.

nappyaddict · 29/12/2008 16:33

YANBU - DS has a kitchen, vacuum cleaner, dishwasher, ironing board, baby doll, pushchair and also has a workbench, train sets, numerous cars and trucks. why do toys have to be boy or girl only toys?

piscesmoon · 29/12/2008 16:34

My boys loved their toy kitchen when they were that age.

starbear · 29/12/2008 16:38

I brought my nephews a toy kitchen when they were young because they wanted one. Sister, said they didn't play with it often but when mixed friends came around there was something for everyone to play together. Fab present. My Ds (4) loves cooking, he can crack eggs without dropping shell in and sift the flour with out getting it on the floor. I made ginger biscuits when he was in bed the other night (he normally makes them with me) In the morning he said the he made them with the elves! Oh his such a fibber!

CorrieDale · 29/12/2008 16:39

Top toy for boys and girls! DS has had loads of 'girl' toys in the past and will still play with them happily now BUT at 3 1/2, he does refer to dolls as 'boring girls' toys'. Which is evidence, like we need it!, that no no matter what you teach them at home, they will pick up all kinds of funny ideas from nursery.

cikecaka · 29/12/2008 16:51

Its a great present, we went to visit relatives yesterday, dd brought her doll and buggy, she played with her cousins ambulance and police car and he played with her doll and buggy

Mum2OJ · 29/12/2008 17:21

TBH i think i am more annoyed at him for belittling my Dsister efforts, she has confidence issues anyway and he knows that.

It was very amusing that my Ddad was stood behind him with his hands on his hips glaring at him as my dad does all the cooking in their house

It did make every one laugh as my grandad tried to make out like he thought that was ok because he is old enough to make his own choice????

thomsc · 29/12/2008 19:29

My 2and1/4 year old DS has just fetched the ingredients for and instructed me (correctly) on how to make fresh chicken nuggets in breadcrumbs. He remembered the flour that I'd forgotten! He also knows pancakes and sweetcorn fritters.

He'd LOVE a kitchen of his own. I'd never get him away from it.

I got DS1 one for christmas when he was little - he loved it.

Both my boys had pushchairs too.

MrsMagooo · 29/12/2008 20:23

YANBU - daft old stereotypical brush

It's a fab pressie - what child doesn't want a play kitchen!!

WishItWouldSnow · 29/12/2008 20:28

DS who is 8 is desperate for a replacement kitchen as the other one died last year.

So good on you for getting one as hopefully he will still be playing with it for years to come.

randomxmas · 29/12/2008 20:30

My ds loves to play kitchen & also likes to help out in the real kitchen.

Meglet · 29/12/2008 20:32

YANBU. DS loves the play kitchen at playgroup and so do all the other little boys. your grandad is out of touch, which is what grandads are for

hazeyjane · 29/12/2008 20:36

We have just passed our play kitchen on to a friend's ds and he loves it.

TBH my dd's loved it too, but I got really sick of having to clean it ( dd2 liked to shove bits of food in any available hole, and one kitchen to clean is enough for me )

pippylongstockings · 29/12/2008 20:55

It sounds fab.....my sisters little boy had a sizzle kitchen thing for xmas he loves it.

My DS2 has a 'baby' and a buggy that he loves - my sister bought him a bottle for 'baby' for xmas but my MIL freaked out when he was playing with it at her house saying it was for girls and little baby's not for little boys !!!! Just because it's a girls toy and he was sometimes putting the bottle in his mouth.... he's not even 2 yet FFS.

TLESinChristmasStockings · 29/12/2008 21:10

For those who have limited room/space this is what I bought ds2 for xmas this year

space saving!!!!

AND ds1 (10 yrs old) has been playing with it too!!!!

StefkaSnowAngel · 29/12/2008 21:13

I would love one of those for my DS! I hate all that boy/girl toy stuff. My aunt bought DS this lovely boy doll and my aunt was all worried it was too girly - it's brilliant. Also DS was so in love with the gift that I gave my brother's DD (a fairy toadstool with fairies in it) that we bought one for him in the sales.
