To think that a play kitchen is a great present...

for a boy?

i think it is fine, my grandad thinks its girly, we tried telling that some of the top chefs are male, but would he listen!!!

This very generous birthday present is from my Dsister, and my grandad was taking the mickey out of her present right in front of her, which i consider to be rude.

Its actually turned out to be DS' favourite toy because it has noisy buttons and cups he can pretend to drink from

And a hand blender likes to stick to his ear and then say 'hiya'

We bought our DS the sizzle kitchen from ELC for his birthday just before Christmas and he loves it, more so than the garage my sister bought him!

I wouldn't call Gordon Ramsay and all his millions girlie!!

JollyPirate · 29/12/2008 21:30

Fantastic gift - DS had one when he was 4 and still LOVES it at 6. Am hopeful of him becoming the next Jamie Oliver who will keep Mummy in the manner to which she'd LOVE to become familar.

Imaginative play is a developmental stage something we learn to look for and nurture. Who would want to knowingly stem the growth of their child/grandchild? Just silly gender stereotypes surprising these days.

ChasingSquirrels · 29/12/2008 21:46

mine both love(d) ours.

i buy lots of "girlie things" for my ds (9months)for when he is older and all i get from my dp and his family one of whom looks after children for a living, is gasps and "he's a boy??". He has a kitchen, pram set with high chair and bouncer with doll (all pink) and a second hand dyson!

Boys are parents too! no wonder my dp cant cook clean or take the dog and baby out at the same time!!meh!

My brother ( a fabulous cook) gave DS a little wooden cooker when he was about 2 - he loved it and played with it until he was about 5. Excellent present.

stephla · 29/12/2008 22:11

My son had one at 2 and still plays with it occasionally at 5 (OK, so today he was playing in the bath at cutting off his head with the plastic knives..but it was imaginitive at least, I suppose). Your grandad probably never really saw a man cook. For my son, it is something a man or a woman might equally do. Even Big Cook Little Cooks are men!

I bought my 21 month old a kitchen for Christmas. DH wasn't so sure but I told him to feck off with all that cars are for boys, dolls are for girls bollocks. DS looooovves it and thats all that matters.

VisionsOfSugarPlums · 29/12/2008 22:47

Never mind the kids, I'd love a play kitchen! I have been known to suggest to dh that we should buy a camper van or caravan for holidays but it's really because I love the dinky little kitchen!

MatNanPlusAbroad · 29/12/2008 22:50

Fab present, good on your Dsis, You and your DS and ignore the grumpy one tis only jealousy

misshardbroom · 30/12/2008 09:16

What sort of dark age is your granddad living in? My DS2's favourite present ever has been his play kitchen. Since he got it for Christmas 2007 he has also acquired a dustpan and brush set, kettle & toaster and ironing board and iron. How many threads on here are from people complaining about their DH's not having a clue how to do things around the house? Why would we raise our boys to be the same?

OptimistS · 30/12/2008 09:56

I've got twins and this year they had (among other things) a play kitchen and a play workbench with tools. DD spends most time on the workbench, DS spends most time on the cooker. Gender stereotyping manufacturer's make of that what you will!!!

MrsMattie · 30/12/2008 09:59

We got my 3.10 yr old son a doll's house for Xmas. He loves it! Last year he got a Baby Annabel doll & buggy. He also loves football, cars & trains etc. This separation of toys by gender should have died out with the dinosaurs. It's pathetic.

nappyaddict · 30/12/2008 11:31

MrsM - which dolls house did you get DS would love one!

TeenyTinyTorya · 30/12/2008 11:35

It's a brilliant present. Ds is 21mths, and has a baby doll and pram as well as cars and building stuff. His favourite toys at toddler group are the dolls and the kitchen, and he loves the dolls' house as well.

I agree with Mrs Mattie - gender separation of toys is ridiculous, as well as the fact that most "girly" toys are an awful shade of icky pink.
