...to be considering MNing on holiday

I think I am an addict.

DP and I are off tomorrow on our long-awaited post-PhD jaunt to New Zealand, and for some reason I keep thinking about the fact that I could be off MN for a whole month, and when I come back no-one will remember me and all sorts of things could happen while I was away.

So AIBU to think that if we stop in an internet cafe I could perhaps just pop in and check that there haven't been any big upheavals? Or would that just be ridiculous? I think maybe it would be ridiculous.

why would keeping contact with important support be ridiculous?

TrillianAstra · 28/12/2008 20:14

I was only here in the first place because I needed people to chat to while I was writing up, how did I get addicted?

ScottishMummy · 28/12/2008 20:18

sorry it is saddo central.letting anonymous internet forum impinge on real life.enjoy trip without MN,ffs it is only bunch of wimmin with pc

idontlikesundays · 28/12/2008 20:25

I'm on holiday right now. Okay, it's only center parcs, but still. 'tis only cos we have wi fi in the villa though, I wouldn't actually go and log on in the foyer.

LucyEllensmummy · 28/12/2008 20:30

Firstly CONGRATULATIONS on writing up your PhD. Although HOW you managed to get written up having discovered Mnet i will never know. I can only thank the Good Lord that i didn't find mnet until after i had submitted, otherwise i would have never finished.

I had an internet break and after the first few days of cold sweats its easy. In fact i only really came back on to see if i could recognise people. Well, of course, it all kicked off in my absence, but i have to say - it has less of a hold on me than it did before, so a break was a good thing. Also, you will be amazed how your attitude will change when you have more enjoyable things to do - i tend to find myself on here a lot more when i have piles of housework or accounts to do.

at New Zealand - enjoy it, you deserve it. Of course, there is the real possibility that once you are there you will forget all about mnet.

TrillianAstra · 28/12/2008 20:39

Hmm, I think you're right LEM, it's cold and dark here at the moment but if there were a beach outside...

YANBU

One of the hi-lights of my hols last year was visiting McDonalds and using their wi-fi for an hour

AprilMeadow · 28/12/2008 20:57

We take our laptop where ever we go (dh has his own company) so we are always online whether we are in Dubai, Florida or Center Parcs. Completely sad but would miss my lovely May07ers too much

ScottishMummy · 28/12/2008 20:59

why would one let an anonymous internet forum impinge on real life?very post modern

jojosmaman · 28/12/2008 21:04

Whose to say it would impinge? Its only like picking up a copy of heat magazine and catching up on the goss.

Ashantai · 28/12/2008 21:05

I think my oh would take a very dim view of me mn'ing while on holiday . Go cold turkey and enjoy your hols, we'll all still be here when you come back

ScottishMummy · 28/12/2008 21:08

well not really,as spontaneous as one would need connection etc,lug pc about.bunch of anonymous strangers or RL interaction with significant others.doh if you chose PC that is telling

christmaseve · 28/12/2008 21:10

I think YABU and a break would do you good. Enjoy your holiday.

TrillianAstra · 28/12/2008 21:16

Lol, I didn't realise this was going to be interpreted as me having relationship troubles (not sure how to do the combination of smileys that means what I mean)

I recognise more names on here than I do in Heat magazine nowadays.

OP posts:
ScottishMummy · 28/12/2008 21:19

no one said you had relational issue, just immediacy need for an anonymous forum. Why chose a bunch of strangers over real life?

TrillianAstra · 28/12/2008 21:33

Why not have both?

(not really sure what immediacy need' means either)

jojosmaman · 28/12/2008 21:36

Yes, I suppose if you don't have iphone and/ or laptop then it is more fiddly. I always have one or the other with me and wouldn't think twice about logging on, as simple as picking up a book or magazine and so not like I sit in an internet cafe in Agra whilst the Taj Mahal passes me by or anything.

TrillianAstra · 28/12/2008 21:39

A laptop is coming with us as we haven't managed to sort out jobs yet, so we're thinking about doing a bit of job-hunting online while we're out there. Not sure how much of that will get done...

I hear the Taj Mahal is reasonably slow-moving, not likely to pass you by

I do have a friend who spend 3 weeks in Granada and didn't go to the Alhambra

jojosmaman · 28/12/2008 21:40

Just re-read op, of course if you are stopping at said internet cafe anyway then yanbu but if you are trekking around just to find one then poss a bit u!

jojosmaman · 28/12/2008 21:41

x-post!

TrillianAstra · 28/12/2008 21:42

Don't worry, definitely only if we are in cafe with wifi or similar for other reasons. You know, one where you pay for access in half-hour blocks but only have 15 mins of stuff to do. I'm not that bad yet.

jojosmaman · 28/12/2008 21:43

My cousin is in thailand but she might as well be sat next to me as I have heard and seen more of her on facebook these past few weeks than ever before! She even manages to update her status fairly regularly!

jojosmaman · 28/12/2008 21:45

Ah we'll let you off then! I'm in India in a few weeks but with work so will have to spend quite a bit of time in the business centre mumsnetting checking my emails!

ScottishMummy · 28/12/2008 21:47

incredulous that whilst potentiality faced with RL emotive/aesthetic/cultural experience mind wanders to internet forum with strangers

sad
