Son has bought innapropriate DVD with his own money

DH took our son shopping to spend his christmas money today and he came back with "Family Guy" DVD boxset which cost him £20.

He's only 8, has seen 'non-rude' parts on youtube and loves it, he's so pleased with it but I know he really shouldn't be allowed to watch it.

But he's spent £20 of his own money on it I've not seen it, is it really bad?

Not suitable for an 8 yo at all, imo.
I let mine watch 'American Dad' - they're aged 12 and 11 - but 'Family Guy' is still off limits.
I love it myself, but I think it's too inappropriate and violent for the DCs.

Hassled · 27/12/2008 14:17

Bits of it are absolutely not watchable for an 8 year old. Some would be fine - but without a detailed knowledge of every episode you may well stumble across some dubious scenes. Very funny - I love the show - but would not let a young child watch.

I think insisting it is taken back and changed is completely fair enough.

TheInvisibleManDidItWithSanta · 27/12/2008 14:18

Don't allow my 8 year old to watch it.

Lauriefairyonthetreeeatscake · 27/12/2008 14:18

totally unsuitable - unfortunately you may want to take it back, hopefully you can make it fun for you two and explain that its very edited for tv and on you-tube.

Hassled · 27/12/2008 14:19

It's not even the sex and violence - which is obviously cartoony - but the themes which are quite adult; an episode where Stewie decides to kill his mother, for example.

dsrplus8 · 27/12/2008 14:19

watch it first to veto it, whats the rating on it 12? or 15?, my ds has that dvd-from exh , wasnt pleased ,and ds watched it at ex-mils house before i knew he had it!too be honest its worse than the simpsons .but its up to you what your ds watches, if you think hes too young then take it away, let him have it back when hes older!

jesusofutopia · 27/12/2008 14:22

He does watch the Simpsons, DH thought it was like that but it has a 15 certificate. Unfortunately he'd already opened it and had watched one of them by the time I got home. I came in the find him laughing hysterically at a chicken being beaten up with blood all over and the man threw a pan of boiling water in it's face! DH said the rest of it wasn't too bad

MatNanPlusTINSEL · 27/12/2008 14:24

Why did your DH think it was a suitable purchase JOU?

It is a 15 Rating, 12 for the odd special.

MatNanPlusTINSEL · 27/12/2008 14:24

if you can live with it fine, but i couldn't.

Saturn74 · 27/12/2008 14:26

The fight with the chicken is an ongoing theme.
(In 'Family Guy', not in my RL!)

You could always sell the DVD on eBay, or maybe the place where you bought it from will replace it?

jesusofutopia · 27/12/2008 14:27

DS told him it was just like The Simpsons

dsrplus8 · 27/12/2008 14:29

still , on the scale of things its not the worst thing he could watch. my dss (ds3) once asked to watch chucky(childs play)??? his birth mothers family let him watch it before, and he was only 4 at the time!. he was promptly given disneys cars dvd! lol

Nighbynight · 27/12/2008 14:30

I confiscate all unsuitable things bought with own money, and my children know that I will.

jesusofutopia · 27/12/2008 14:31

My DH's family allowed DS1 (10) to watch Kill Bill a few weeks ago

dsrplus8 · 27/12/2008 14:33

stick to your guns there jesusofutopia, swift censorship is the only way to go, or else he'll be asking to watch 18s soon.!when he asks to have it reply " of course you can, as soon as your 15! "

Saturn74 · 27/12/2008 14:33

Weeelllll, it is similar to The Simpsons in some ways.
But the 15 certificate should have tipped your DH off to the appropriateness of the content, really.

Up to you entirely of course.
I'd have taken it off him by now though.

sherby · 27/12/2008 14:34

I'd make him take it back, not suitable for an 8 yr old at all imo

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/12/2008 14:35

men eh

didnt he read the age suitable - the big 15 didnt give it away?

personally i wouldnt let him watch it and would return it asap and get something more suitable

its almost double his age

dsrplus8 · 27/12/2008 14:35

whats wrong with people? there are age limits for a reason! kids grow up too fast as it is, theres nothing wrong with protecting their innocence.

AuntieMaggie · 27/12/2008 14:35

I wouldn't let an 8 year old watch it. My DP loves it but it is very inappropriate for children.

Uriel · 27/12/2008 14:37

I'd have taken it off him by now, too.

Parumpapumfumf · 27/12/2008 14:45

my ds's best friend is allowed to watch this. DS thinks I am an ogre because I don't let him. I have stuck to my guns.

It is very funny, but the themes are just too adult for an 11-yr-old, let alone an 8 year old. It isn't like The Simpsons where on the whole, it can be viewed and understood on a couple of levels...

Let him take it back and get something else instead IMO.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 27/12/2008 14:48

I've seen nearly every episode. It is SOOOOO not appropriate for your son to watch. I do love it and am open-minded but some of the humour is of the kind kids just shouldn't be exposed to. The following are examples that leave me myself, so there is no way I'd want an 8 year old seeing that stuff! They are so impressionable and even if they don't understand it, can you imagine how you'd feel if he repeated the dialogue in the playground and you were called in to see the head teacher and explain how he was getting exposed to that stuff?!

These are the worst: There is a character who is a paedophile and always trying to groom the neighbourhood kids. I have seen "jokes" about rape, and very offensive racist "jokes" (they stuck in my head and I can remember them word for word but there's no way I'm repeating them on here).

The Simpsons is one thing, this is COMPLETELY different, and you can never tell which episodes are going to have the really bad bits in. So if you are going to vet it, you might see the one "mild" episode and assume the rest of them are fine (NOOOO!! they aren't!!).

Leo9 · 27/12/2008 15:05

oh dear your DH has messed up really hasn't he. Even if your DS told him it was like the simpsons he should have read the 15 certificate, it's not hard is it....

you don't have much option except taking it back and getting him his 20 to spend on something appropriate.

FrannyandZooey · 27/12/2008 15:06

the 'own money' thing is a red herring
you wouldn't allow him to have beer if he bought it with his own money
