To think fancy dress is for CHILDREN?

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 22/12/2008 09:44

Or at least a fancy dress party?
Going out dressed as slutty santas and playboy bunnies and police women etc does NOT make you look cool and fun and funky.
You look like a twat.

yanbu

I would refuse a fancy dress invitaton deffo

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 22/12/2008 09:49

I went to works christmas party on Saturday, the one for the children. It was fancy dress, and they expected the parents to be in fancy dress too.
No parent was in fancy dress

I used to go out drinking with the girls back in the day, we went out dressed as naughty school girls, cowgirls, bunnies etc etc, always guaranteed us loads of drinks purchased for us and a snog at the end of the night. But I was 18, so I think it was allowable

SantasNuttySTaff · 22/12/2008 09:52

I do rather like a bit of fancy dress tbh its nice to be a fairy/ angel/ cavewoman/ vampire/ superhero/ gangster now and again, you can be a different carachter for a night. its fun.

I'm a big kid at heart anyway and plus my dd loves playing dress up with mummy

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 22/12/2008 09:53

Only just Elf, only just.

I am 27, 28 next month and the amount of friends I have recently seen pictures of dressed as twats something or other is astounding.

Fancy dress can be fun! But I agree slutty santa etc is really trashy.

I'm going to a gangster theed party on new years eve and this will be my costume. I'd almost wear it on a normal day.

Worst though is halloween, where people dress up in stockings and basques. Scary, but not in the way Halloween should be scary.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 22/12/2008 09:56

I'm 27 now, and if I go out drinking, its not in fancy dress, leaving that to my little girl now.
Luckily most of my fancy dress days were pre digital cameras being common, so there are very few pictures that could be put on other peoples facebook profiles etc!

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 22/12/2008 09:57

Oh and check out an old thread of mine. I have no shame.

OrmIrian · 22/12/2008 09:59

Depends.

It was rag day here on Thurday. Lots of stockings and suspenders on view.. and that was just the lads And mostly on thighs that really shouldn't see the light of day. But there was one girl dressed as a bumble bee and she looked lovely.

But generally it does seem to be an excuse to wander about in public in your underwear. Why is that?

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 22/12/2008 10:00

That's a party, plus a proper outfit iyswim.
I would go to a proper fancy dress party, and I'd put real thought into what I was going to wear, I wear fancy dress for the DC's halloween party every year, we have great fun doing it, but that is a world of difference to

This

This

and this

(these are not my friends, just googled pictures!)

I dressed as a pirate for DS#1's first school b'day party. No suspender in sight! Twas fun buckling swashes and ar-arhhging at children.

Reallytired · 22/12/2008 10:06

Where I work the teachers and children often come in fancy dress. They enjoy it and so do the kids.

What is the harm? The last fancy dress day had a christmas theme and the cheeky kids asked me why didn't dress up as a Christmas pudding.

Siriusmewisathreadkillertoo · 22/12/2008 10:07

In the town where I live nearly everyone dresses up on New Years Eve. It's great fun!

PavlovtheRedNosedReindeer · 22/12/2008 10:12

Depends on the fancy dress is...went to a james bond casino royal party the other week and it was fab...lots of glam, chance to wear some bling, all us girls had 'bond' names! Twas great! But santa etc? nope, not my bag.

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 22/12/2008 10:29

"Where I work the teachers and children often come in fancy dress. They enjoy it and so do the kids."
Tis for the children! So not a problem it's the 'nights out on the town' dressed as trollops that I mean.

OP posts:
nickytinseltimes · 22/12/2008 10:35

Yanbu to hate the trollop dressing up.

Proper dressing up is okay though.

TsarHumbug · 22/12/2008 10:36

I agree with this.

If you receive an invitation to a party and get all enthusiastic planning a gorgeous outfit, then see the dreaded words 'fancy dress'. I want to hurl it in the bin. Especially themed ones. Why is it funny? I don't get it.

It usually involves raiding the dc's dressing up box too. No thanks.

I get a bit like that with dc and fancy dress though too. It adds more blimmin angst to getting out the door.

Siriusmewisathreadkillertoo · 22/12/2008 10:42

I must now admit to dressing up in nearly identical outfits as posted by TinyTim. When I was about 21 and still had the body for it though!

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 22/12/2008 10:59

Oh no siruis.
I thought better of you

YABU i have been to many a fancy dress party and nobody dressed like a trollop (well maybe i did ) the funniest was my friends cousin who came as Sponge Bob Square Pants (she had trouble sitting)

Fancy dress is fun and lighthearted, nobody got hurt and we all had a giggle at the funny outfits

Another friend of mine is planning for a bunch of us to go out for her birthday in Feb dressed as.... the 118 118 men

Now i draw the line at that! you wouldnt catch me dead walking round the bars dressed like that

mysterymoniker · 22/12/2008 11:19

YABU

Anna8888 · 22/12/2008 11:20

YABVVVVU.

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 22/12/2008 11:20

VT, my op says 'or at least a party' so therefore we agree

OP posts:
TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 22/12/2008 11:21

Anna are you serious?
You go out in fancy dress?

OP posts:
Anna8888 · 22/12/2008 11:22

Yes of course I go out in fancy dress if it's a fancy dress party. What on earth is odd about fancy dress? Reserving it for children is very dull indeed.

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 22/12/2008 11:23

Doh.
My OP says 'or at least a fancy dress party'
I'm talking about slappers in town dressed up.
