I work in customer service, both over the telephone and in person. Most of our customers are wealthy people, but the majority are lovely. The other day a lady came in and she had the most gorgeous Radley handbag. She must have seen my checking it out, because as she turned to leave, she muttered 'this is a case of you can look, but you can't touch. on your wage, this kind of thing stays directly in the shop window, darling' and flounced off. I was nothing but my nice, smiling self to her so where that came from, I don't know!

do these bags have the labels hanging off so you can tell what brand they are? They all look the same to me.

MrsSeanBean · 22/12/2008 09:56

NMC - Radley bags have little coloured tags in the shape of scotty dogs hanging off. Challenge: spot how many in next trip to Cabot Cirus and report back!

Parsleypants · 22/12/2008 10:06

Bitch. Not exactly Mulberry or Gucci or something wildly ridiculously overpriced either. She'll get hers...

christMAScomesbutonceayear · 22/12/2008 10:08

Radley bags a bit vulgar imo

jingleMAMADIVAsbells · 22/12/2008 10:09

I have 2 Radley bags, got them from Ebay £20 each (one was a birthday present).

I am guessing that she got hers from there too

Some people are just ignorant buggers, shouldv'e just told her you know of someone who sells fake ones and that hers looks very similair Watch the daft cows face fall.

paolosgirl · 22/12/2008 10:42

I can't understand the fuss over a handbag! My Radley was in a major sale in the outlet, I bought it because I liked the shape and the colour - end of story. I'm certainly not vulgar - I'm a middle class library manager fgs!

Do people honestly make judgments about other women's handbags? Honestly? How do you even find the time to LOOK at other people's handbags in between dealing with kids/pushing prams/reading shopping lists etc????!

mayorquimby · 22/12/2008 11:11

she seems like a nightmare. nothing to do with how much or little money, unfortunately rudeness seems to transcend all class barriers and i have encountered rude people from both ends of the spectrum.

Jenbottleofeggnog · 22/12/2008 12:28

Oh god, I spent half the thread thinking "I wonder what a Radley bag is", then after everyone said they were awful I realised my DH bought me one for my birthday - with a little dog on!

I do like dogs though so just thought it was cute!

CrackopentheBaileys · 22/12/2008 12:38

They're not awful, thats just the opinion of some.
However that woman was awful agreed by all I believe!

MrsSeanBean · 22/12/2008 12:43

Eggnogg- don't feel bad. I feel a rant coming on here. Why should anyone be made to feel bad because of their choice of handbag? The woman the op referred to was obviously without manners or breeding, but that needn't tarnish all handbags with the same brush.

Tesco green reusable bag is the height of 'can't be arsed with this handbag rat race' chic.

paolosgirl · 22/12/2008 12:43

Agree, Baileys!

needmorecoffee · 22/12/2008 13:09

I did poop into Harvey Nics this morning but thehandbags are still crap, ugly and over priced. Honestly, you wouldn't have known I put them back on the wrong shelves

pamelat · 22/12/2008 13:12

OMG, what a cow.

What is her problem.

I don't think that many people would say something as crude/horrid as that?

OrmIrian · 22/12/2008 13:13

I'm sorry am I missing the point here?

It makes no difference what kind of bag it was or how expensive it is. The woman was a rude vicious snob. If it had been a really expensive one she would have been justified I suppose?

pamelat · 22/12/2008 13:14

I bought one half price at a duty free sale, £40 - not bad for a leather bag.

Up herself cow.

MrsSeanBean · 22/12/2008 13:15

Does Harvey Nics have a cafe NMC... If so have you sampled? I'm wondering if it's OK for us mortals to use.

My logic is that I don't mind paying a teensy bit extra if it means I can beat the queue in M&S and rest my weary feet for a bit.

MrsSeanBean · 22/12/2008 13:17

Nope, she wouldn't have been justified no matter what the expense really. How could she know/assume the OP could not get one if she so desired anyway? Arrogance of the highest order I say.

MrsSeanBean · 22/12/2008 13:17

The woman in OP I meant not you Orm!

needmorecoffee · 22/12/2008 13:20

I didn't look MrsSB. ds1 was with me and he hates lifts and I was in my wheelchair so couldn't do the escalators. Spo we only investigated the ground floor.

People with expensive things think mere mortals are jealous and so therefore act snobby over the things. Like they are important. I remember when i was campaigning againt fur. Some woman would always claim it was because we were jealous and couldn't afford the stuff. People like that like to think us normal folk are marvelling at their expensive tat when generally people like me are thinking 'well, they saw you coming now, didn't they.'

paolosgirl · 22/12/2008 13:24

I posted along the same lines in my earlier thread needmorecoffee about the shop called I Saw You Coming in the Harry Enfield sketch - you've got it in one!

Lizzzombie · 22/12/2008 13:24

What a total freak of a woman!
Radley bags, although expensive, are imo and next to other designer handbags, not outrageously expensive. If it had been a Hermes Birkin or something, then fair enough, they are expensive, but a Radley?! very odd woman indeed.

MrsSeanBean · 22/12/2008 13:25

Yes! If I did the lottery and won tomorrow there's no way I would spend £1000 on a handbag. I know it's true to a certain extent you get whgat you pay for, but this is only true up to a certain amount. After - hmm - say £100 - maybe even a bit less - you are just getting ripped off / paying for a label.

If I find the cafe, will report back

BTW.. Fur - 'worn by beautiful animals and ugly people' (as says the sticker on my car window).

SalLikesEggnogUnderMistletoe · 22/12/2008 13:26

NMC, whilst I'm sure you get people acting snobbish, I think it's rude to imply all "people with expensive things" are snobbish or think "mere mortals" are jealous. That's not true and a rather rude generalisation imo. I have some expensive things, some dirt cheap. Both types because I liked the specific product. I would never dream of thinking I'm either better than someone or that they would necessarily want it. For all I know they think it's dead ugly (well, my dh might agree in most cases).

randomxmas · 22/12/2008 13:32

What a horrid person - things are just things. Who cares the cost of her bag, shoes, whatever - it's the person that counts. She may judge on appearences but this is very stupid.

paolosgirl · 22/12/2008 13:32

You liked the specific product - and had the money to buy it should have been the remainder of that sentence!

It is a generalisation to say that all people with beautiful things think that others are jealous, but there is a tremendous amount of snobbery attached to expensive items, otherwise the marketing people wouldn't promote it as something to covet. For some people, expensive items = status and a reflection of their income.

Don't get it myself, but there we go.
