MadamDeathStare: it's interesting that you would leave forum where good grammar and spelling were enforced, when MN seems to have unofficial rules about the writing standards that will be tolerated (including putting in paragraphs, etc). No official rules, but if you write in txtspk or don't punctuate then people just won't bother reading and replying. Much more civilised.

I find the swear words horrible too so YANBU in my opinion.

OrmIrian · 14/12/2008 16:00

They are just words. That's all. It's the spirit in which they are used that might be offensive. If they are used to deliberately offend or to be aggressive. IME they are used as emphasis on MN for the most part.

How can you be offended by certain individual words? It doesn't make sense.

ComeOVeneer · 14/12/2008 16:02

"but thankfully you don't get nagged at here for misspelling or typos". I beg to differ. There a quite a few pedants on here who talk delight (so it would seem) in pointing out other posters mistakes in spelling and grammar.

ComeOVeneer · 14/12/2008 16:04

And for those pedants let me correct my own post talk = take and of course it should read "other posters' mistakes"

True it doesn't seem as bad as it was a couple of months back.

Deathstar and TinselianAstra - good spelling and grammAR, surely?

lol

NewKnickersFromSantaOnMaHead · 14/12/2008 16:19

I used to get pulled up on my spelling and grammar on here alot.

TinselianAstra · 14/12/2008 16:24

Captainmummy - I wrote grammAR.

MadamDeathstarOverBethlehem · 14/12/2008 16:47

Exactly captainmummy, which is why I stick to Mumsnet and Bricklink. My spelling was just not good enough for the other site - which also came across as extremely pompous and twee.

Much better here. I am sure you have noticed I don't use textspeak.

MadamDeathstarOverBethlehem · 14/12/2008 16:49

I agree with ButterflyEffect about the difference between swearing to make a point and swearing AT someone. The first does not bother me, the second is plain nasty. Especially as it probably would not occur in a face to face conversation.

ThePregnantMerryYuleWitch: your comment reminded me of the Monty Python song:

Ho Ho Fucking Ho - WARNING, NOT AT ALL KID OR WORK SAFE!

RubberDuck · 14/12/2008 17:03

(ah not monty python despite being listed as such on several sites - actually Kevin Wilson)

cyLENTeeNIGHT · 14/12/2008 17:09

not sure how people can get offended by written swears. what happens when you're reading a novel and someone swears?

but then i would say that as i fucking love swearing.

Fleurlechaunte · 14/12/2008 17:11

Is it all the arse's in my thread you find offensive OP?

Myrrhcy · 14/12/2008 17:17

I do wince when I see fuck or c*t in a thread title tbh, if dd is around that is!

I'm not exactly swear free in RL so within a thread it doesn't bother me. ffs is one of my habitual expressions (muttered under my breath, that is)

loopylou6 · 14/12/2008 17:32

i see where you are coming from, but like others have said, we are all adults here, some people swear, some dont, deal with it or dont use the site. I do find your OP a little confusing though, what are people meant to do? post some thing with a title saying 'WARNING, I AM ABOUT TO POST A THREAD THAT WILL HAVE SWEARING IN THE TITLE SO DONT LOOK'

TheCrackFox · 14/12/2008 17:35

If I wanted a swear free parenting web-site I would go to Netmums. However, I am not a sad twat so I will stick to Mumsnet and its liberal swearing policy.

ScottishMummy · 14/12/2008 17:49

you can ask but unlikely to be adhered too.one person effing and blinding is another person lively post

bad enough that the grammar police post and get effervescent at mere spelling mistakes without the sweary word police lurking too
