Oh dear!
That's not even a slip of letters is it?
No YANBU.

roundcornvirgin · 12/12/2008 20:20

NO!

roundcornvirgin · 12/12/2008 20:22

Actually I've worked with a couple of teachers who couldn't spell.

emkana · 12/12/2008 20:22

I didn't get it at first, read it so that it rhymed with "trifle"

OP posts:
jkklpu · 12/12/2008 20:23

definitely not

prettybutterfly · 12/12/2008 20:38

Yanbu. It's depressing. I'm going to start sending ds1's message book back corrected in red pen.

fizzbuzz · 12/12/2008 20:48

I am a teacher..my colleague is dyslexic. She quite often spells the odd word wrong.........very good teacher though

chloemegjess · 12/12/2008 20:52

I don't think poor spelling should stop somebody being a teacher

roundcornvirgin · 12/12/2008 20:54

It depends really. I think poor grammar is worse than poor spelling.

roundcornvirgin · 12/12/2008 20:55

However I think that teachers should be able to spell.

MmeHereWeGoAWassailLindt · 12/12/2008 20:55

I read it as trifle

Teachers should be able to spell. How else are they going to teach our children?

ladylush · 12/12/2008 20:56

Tbh I try to set aside an inate snobbery about such things. More important that the person is good at teaching. In an ideal world one would hope a teacher has the whole package but hey, it's not an ideal world.

ladylush · 12/12/2008 20:56

We can teach our children too. Ds learned to read at home, not school.

roundcornvirgin · 12/12/2008 20:59

I disagree. Most chn will learn to spell in spite of a teacher who cannot spell, however chn with spelling difficulties will not. More importantly the teacher is less likely to pick up on their difficulties. It is not snobbery, it is reality.

Tidey · 12/12/2008 21:00

I've seen worse. Aborigine spelled 'Aubergine'.

LynetteScavo · 12/12/2008 21:01

I think if somebody is accademic enough to be able to gain a degree, then they should be able to teach, even if they make the odd spelling mistake.

As a poor speller I feel the need to defend other poor spellers.

I despair at TAs with bad gramer.

My child does not go "up town" he goes to town. Thankyou.

WinkyWinkola · 12/12/2008 21:02

Aubergine? OMG. That's not even phonetic. Brilliant!

Lots of home schooling posts coming up!

LynetteScavo · 12/12/2008 21:03

I spelt grammar incorreclty on pupose, obviously.

WinkyWinkola · 12/12/2008 21:03

I knew you did it on purpose, Lynette. That's why I didn't pick you up on it!

MmeHereWeGoAWassailLindt · 12/12/2008 21:06

I don't mind an occassional spelling mistake or mistype. I am not great at spelling. The word "beautiful" is however not an obscure, seldom used word and I would expect a teacher to write it correctly.

AaliyahsFirstXmas · 12/12/2008 21:07

I'm afraid I'm with the crowd of if you can't spell you shouldn't be teaching. How can you expect the kids to spell rightly if you can't?
I'd be very worried for my kids if they were being taught by that person.

ladylush · 12/12/2008 21:08

I wasn't saying it's snobbery per se - just that it is a snobbery of mine iyswim. I do incline towards snobbery wrt poor spelling and grammar. 10 years ago I'd have been aghast at the op but I can now see that teachers can be good inspite of poor spelling. I don't condone laziness though. Teachers who struggle with spelling should use a dictionary.

ladylush · 12/12/2008 21:09

But what about if your own grammar/spelling is poor? Your children learn A LOT from you, not just from their teachers.

fizzbuzz · 12/12/2008 21:18

But you can teach if you are dyslexic, because it is covered by the disabiity act, and is considered discrimination if you are prevented from doing a job because of a disability.

Dictionaries are not much use for dyslexics

ladylush · 12/12/2008 21:20

So what is?
