I have a big gathering of people coming round, doing loads of food and had a huge sack of very muddy potatoes that needed washing before I put them in the oven for jacket spuds. Was in a right state about timings and all the work,

So... i put them in the dishwasher.

and they've come out beautifully clean and already warm to go in the oven.

i'm impressed.... yet another reason why i need a dishwasher!! salmon and baked spuds in one go!!!

oneyummymummy · 11/12/2008 18:31

You put it in foil, and the heat from the boiling water washing over the foil (and maybe plates or suds) will cook the salmon.

edam · 11/12/2008 18:33

Only problem is my dishwasher is always either half-full of dirty stuff waiting to go on or clean stuff that needs emptying. Am very that yours was empty and waiting to go!

OLIVIASMAMA · 11/12/2008 19:34

Herooooo .....impressive!

rubyslippersisappearinginpanto · 11/12/2008 19:35

I remember that thread

you also told me to put DS's shoes in the oven IIRC!

You should write a cook book

Lulumama · 11/12/2008 19:35

ruby, MSN?

Apollinare · 11/12/2008 19:36

Keith Floyd washes mussels in the dishwasher in his restaurant - well he did, don't know if he has a restaurant now.

Have just added jacket potatoes to party menu.

tortoiseshellWasMusicaYearsAgo · 11/12/2008 19:37

There is a fabulous account by Sally Magnusson of when she and her husband cooked salmon in the dishwasher on Xmas Day while they were out at church. Only they didn't wrap it in foil...and it completely disintegrated, and you can guess the rest!!!

JamInMyWellies · 11/12/2008 19:42

Brilliant cheered me right up. Just a quick query though no soap suds but what about the rinse aid and salt. Or I guess the salt saves on seasoning.

CrackopentheBaileys · 11/12/2008 19:48

HILARIOUS!

bandgeek · 11/12/2008 22:35

I'm going to have to start engaging my brain before I type

mankymummy · 12/12/2008 09:48

edam... an empty dishwasher? that never happens in my house either. it did only have the bits from the top of the cooker in it though (see am lazy slattern about cleaning the cooker too).

ruby... oh yes i remember that, i did say on a LOW oven though...

actually they tasted absolutely fine, i will be doing it again definitely.

am just wondering though.. if i put them in the washing machine with a razor blade do you think that would automatically peel them for mash?!!!

genius

FiveGoMadInDorset · 12/12/2008 09:55

My Aunt has been known to cook whole salmon in the dishwasher.

edam · 12/12/2008 09:59

manky - phew! I was worrying that I was even more slatternly than you. Not that you are, of course, merely inspired.

What is this cleaning the cooker top you speak of? I just wipe mine.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/12/2008 09:59

Inspired!

I remember the paella thread too, snort.

QueenTinselShadow · 12/12/2008 10:00

Ummmmm, does it get hot enough to kill all bacteria and germs in soil (as you said they were really muddy) so that you dont contaminate all your dishes and cutlery when you next wash your dishes? Or am I paranoid?

mankymummy · 12/12/2008 10:01

wipe? doesnt that require frequency though?

i wait until mine is really, really cruddy then just chuck the whole lot in the dishwasher... i look at it as being ecological, think how wasteful it is giving it regular wipes !

zazen · 12/12/2008 10:02

I love it! How brilliant are you mankymummy!

I remember the yellow food colouring thread - fab!

I always put the cooker shelves in as well. Saves all that scrubbing.

mankymummy · 12/12/2008 10:03

queentinsel...

bacteria? germs? contaminate?

i do not understand these terms....!

OP posts:
TinselianAstra · 12/12/2008 10:07

All the soil would rinse away, right?

Otherwise you would constantly be washing your plates in the crud off the previous plates.

QueenTinselShadow · 12/12/2008 10:16

Well, I have ONCE caught an episode of "how clean is your house" and the woman living there was totally scolded for cleaning her horses equipment in the dishwasher as it was unhygienic, and would contaminate the next set of dishes with whatever shite from the hourses mouth....

so to speak.

but I shall leave now, as I am shaking uncontrollably with germophobia.

wipessnotonkeyboard-- blows nose.

edam · 12/12/2008 10:31

I wipe with a dishcloth and hot soapy water after I've done the plates and pans so have a clean (ho ho) conscience on environmental issues.

Yuck to the horse stuff. I once had to stop dh putting the cat's bowl in the dishwasher. OK, it sterilises (has a baby bottle cycle) but still, the 'yuck' factor was too much for me.

mankymummy · 12/12/2008 10:33

whispers....how else can you clean the cats bowl if not in the dishwasher?
