my 13 yrold dd2 has pink hair , its semi perment over her natural blonde , done as undercolour and streaks in her fringe, bright neon pink!she loves it, her friends at school have it done too. ive been told im a bad mother because of it,by a "freind" ,i might ask. dd2 is a very good girl, does great at school and is always helpful and kind to her siblings, why does "pink hair" "make her look like a slut" -quote"friend", i wanted to k.o said friend by the way , is she right?

I think that sounds GREAT. My inner 13 year old is very . It's only hair dye. Sounds fun to me.

Tortington · 09/12/2008 15:06

no. but surprized school allow it - i would let it go now, its nearly xmas break and then let her have own colour back after xmas and not do it again until shes a bit older.

my dd has done all sorts with her hair - but if its a funky colour she gets sent home from school.

Lauriefairyonthetreeeatscake · 09/12/2008 15:06

It sounds lovely and I am definitely in favour of self-expression however I wouldn't allow it till she was 16 I don't think so maybe a touch young for me. It does tend to make them look a lot older, as does make-up.

VinegarSantaGropedMyTits · 09/12/2008 15:07

It doesnt make you a bad mother and why would it make her look like a slut?

You friend is bonkers

roundcornvirgin · 09/12/2008 15:08

your friend is a cow

moopymoo · 09/12/2008 15:10

think fun but not suitable for school. But then I am an old fart who is at the layers of slap 13 yr olds wear.

dsrplus8 · 09/12/2008 15:11

vinegar , thank you!!!! custardo dd2 high school is very strict about uniform, but theyre not bothered about hair dos as long as the girls have long hair tied back for teccy and science(tools and bunsin burners?)

That's very strong language to use about a teenager who's having a bit of harmless fun
sack her right off

dsrplus8 · 09/12/2008 15:15

well "friend" is exfriend now, i do draw the line at makeup except for a little for parties( lipgloss and mascara),but dd2 is stunningly beautiful so she wont ever need it really.

MrsSeanBean · 09/12/2008 15:22

Personally I wouldn't like it. But I don't have a 13y dd, and said a lot of things before becoming a parent that have now 'relaxed' shall we say!

Your friend was out of order with her remark.

dsrplus8 · 09/12/2008 15:22

i didnt let ds3 have skunk hair (long spikey with bleached stripe running down the middle, so im the wicked witch of the east now! , but ds3 IS 8yr old...he says its no fair as sis has hers done! damned if u do ...damned if you dont!

If the school was fine with it, I would let my DTDs dye their hair. I might wait until they were a bit older because I am not sure what chemicals are in the dye and how much gets absorbed.

Your 'friend' sounds horrid.

PingpingsatonSantasface · 09/12/2008 15:28

Your friend is nuts and would know longer be my friend if she said that about my child.

I had at the age of 13 my hair dyed a deep red my mum hated it but my Step mum thought it looked ok.

KatieDD · 09/12/2008 15:29

I'd rather mine waited until they go to Uni to start all this sort of thing, it's just a case of being a bit young to start rather than her looking like a slut fgs.
What's left to try/rebel against if you've done it all before you leave high school.

shelleyloukissessantaselves · 09/12/2008 15:29

how awful of your friend to say that. If it helps as a teenager my hair went from flurescent green to electric blue to bright pink and varies colours in between

shelleyloukissessantaselves · 09/12/2008 15:30

various even

Ivykaty44 · 09/12/2008 15:32

I had pink hair when I was 16 and it was all over semipermanents pink, as it went over already highlighted hair as it washed away I was left with pink streaks in long fair hair.

It was fun and why not have fun when you are in your teens?

Semi permanent hair dye is not absorbed into the cortex of the hair and will not even damage the hair (although it was difficult to blow dry due to lack lust) Probably safer than using head and shoulders shampoo which has a ph of 9 and you could warm up and perm with

zenandtheartofbaking · 09/12/2008 15:37

My cousin had pink hair and was head girl at a g.s.. Not quite as much pink as it sounds like your daughter has but then it was many years ago.

I think if the school don't mind, then why should anybody else?

jesuswhatnext · 09/12/2008 15:42

my dd started dyeing her hair at 13 (first colour was a neon pink ), i had no problem with it whatsoever, she always worked hard at school, has never really given much trouble apart from a bit of lip and having a bedroom from hell - she is now 17, has a new colour most months, has had so many changes that even the neighbours enjoy guessing what it will be next.
i suppose what im getting to is that if she is generally a good kid, whats the problem?
imo it takes more than a bit of hair dye to make a tart!

another upside to this is that since the credit crunch and my general lack of cash, dd is an expert at dyeing MY hair , saves me a fortune!

CrushaGrape · 09/12/2008 16:01

Nothing slutty about having pink hair - ignore your friend, and let your daughter have fun with her hair. After a conservative start of bright red at 13, at the age of 14 I had several variations on pink, green and purple clumps, which I loved. I only regret that I can't seem to find any pictures of it.

harleyd · 09/12/2008 16:04

pink hair rocks

Ivykaty44 · 09/12/2008 16:28

harleyd - can you get them in Claires?

Kitteh · 09/12/2008 17:04

Im jealous of your DD.. hehe.. i used to have bright red hair up until about a year ago when my hairdresser gave me wrong cos i kept bleaching it.. oops.. I do not think you're a bad mother in the slightest.. said "friend" was probs jealous.. lol.. xx

abbierhodes · 09/12/2008 21:31

Your friend is mental! That hair sounds lovely. I am surprised school allow it, but if they do then there's no problem! I agree with minimal make up though...too much on teenagers does look slutty.
