AIBU to want to slap my work colleague

I so annoyed at her. I have soup for my lunch pretty much everyday. It's vegetable so not horrid smelling, but every time I heat it up she complains about the f*cking smell. It does my head in. I like her in every other respects except this.

It makes me feel really small when she does it and I can't eat bread. She has some sort for food complex too.

So AIBU to want to slap her when this happens?

Is it cauliflower or cabbage soup?

oiwhatsoccurring · 25/11/2008 13:19

Its potato and carrot and onion

i think she's being a bit intolerant.... if all of you eat at your desk and you don't have a break then there's no other option is there?

I'd just have a quiet word and tell her that you appreciate she doesn't like the smell, and you purposefully don't make whiffy soups like broccolli or cauliflower... (unless you do )

Then if she continues to complain tell your boss that she's doing your head in.

THEN slap her if that doesn't work

claw3 · 25/11/2008 13:25

oiwhatso- What does she have for her lunch?

fizzbuzz · 25/11/2008 13:26

Really cannot believe the advice is to go and sit in car park!

What if no car park?! Perhaps op's office doesn't have a canteen and she has to eat her food at her desk. I presume she heats it up in a microwave provided for this purpose, so there is always a risk that some food smells when heated. Isn't that the nature of food? Don't most of us just tolerate it? I do. In fact I don't even care what people eat at work, smelly or otherwise.

Do we have pc food now? The world has gone mad! No food aromas in case of offence. Where would egg sandwiches stand in this case? Perhaps you would have to eat them in an isolation tent

DumbledoresGirl · 25/11/2008 13:26

I was recently in a staff room where someone heated up a fish dish. I like fish but I have to admit the pungent smell of this meal really did make me feel a little bit sick. I didn't complain though.

claw3 · 25/11/2008 13:35

Agree slapping her is a bit harsh, tip the soup over her head!!

Pheebe · 25/11/2008 13:43

I frequently want to slap my workmate, she has hundreds of annoying little habits...and I'm self employed and work alone

oiwhatsoccurring · 25/11/2008 13:46

LOL Pheebe

YABU. Bring it in in a flask then you can still have it warm but it won't stink the place out.

ScottishMummy · 25/11/2008 13:51

did you know research showed desk dirtier than a toilet maybe you need to clean your desk?

is it a bit whiffy?

claw3 · 25/11/2008 13:51

oiwhatso - oh right, perhaps she does have a problem then and is very sensitive to smells (my son does, so i can sympathise with her to a certain extent)

My 4 year old hates the smell of certain foods, but short of cooking in the garden, he just has to get on with it. All i can suggest is that she has to do the same.

Scottish, No my desk isn't whiffy & I use flash wipes to clean my desk every couple of days.

Glad I do after reading that link -

What is in your soup? My friend at work had a tomato and herby one recently which made the whole stairway stink (the kitchen at work is at the top of the stairs) for most of the afternoon. Not true to say that veg soup doesn't smell bad, though obv it's not as bad as the dreaded fish.

oiwhatsoccurring · 25/11/2008 14:01

Hedge - it isn't the same soup everyday but yes it's soup. But EVERYONE in my office eats at there desk and 75% would have something hot and some would even turn my stomach but what p*ss me off is that she only ever says anything to me when she can smell worse.

Just want to add all she eats at work is cheese sandwiches but at home she says she loves to eat veg.

"she only ever says anything to me when she can smell worse. "

So this isn't really about soup, it's about your relationship with your work colleague? Have you asked her why she doesn't find everyone else's food smells annoying too?

smugmarried · 25/11/2008 14:03

tell her she smells. Seriously, next time she moans about the soup say, actually I hope you don't take this the wrong way but I've been meaning to tell you you've got a BO problem - at the very least it will give you a little snigger and her a complex.

If that fails, take bousin cheese in and leave a very small portion in her drawer where she can't see it.

claw3 · 25/11/2008 14:03

Scotish - God i cant believe someone actually researched that!

ScottishMummy · 25/11/2008 14:05

well aye i wouldnt eat cullen skink that would be takin it too far

oiwhatsoccurring · 25/11/2008 14:06

I think she only says anything to me is because I am probably more approachable

ScottishMummy · 25/11/2008 14:06

went to an infection control training and they regaled us with that sort of stuff

claw3 · 25/11/2008 14:09

Oiwhatso - Tell her to grow up, seems very petty.

fizzbuzz · 25/11/2008 14:11

Actually, the problem is the workplace. They are not providing extraction to remove any smelly niffs.

So send her to your employer..it's their problem after all
