To make up a story about something being stolen?

Last week at school, DS (9) was given a Glockenspiel to practice on at home. He has a proper lesson at school once a week.
The one he was given was brand new and he was told to take care of it, any marks etc and he (or we) would have to pay for a new one.

Anyway over the course of the weekend this thing has been chewed by our puppy, had wine spilt all over it, had one of the 'keys' pulled out and the plastic casing has been burnt and melted. Also he brought 3 sticks home with it, one has been lost and another has been snapped.

The worst thing about it is that poor DS has not been home all weekend so has nothing to do with the state it's in.

I'm tempted to make up a story about the car being broken into and smashed up so that the teachers will 'let it go' as we can't afford to buy a new one right now.

AIBU?

um yes. sorry but....

IllegallyBrunette · 23/11/2008 18:15

YABU, if you couldn't afford to replace it then you should have taken better care of it.

Why was it left within reach of the puppy and other things that would cause this to happen ?

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 23/11/2008 18:16

Yes of course YABU. If he hasn't been home then who got it into that state and why wasn't it put away in a safe place?

SoupDragon · 23/11/2008 18:16

How the hell did you manage to melt the casing??

SammyK · 23/11/2008 18:17

yes YABU, I'm sorry but how careless for all that to happen to it over one weekend, esp if money is tight and you know you can't afford to replace it

would you be lying to your ds too? Or just expecting him to lie to school about it?

Tryharder · 23/11/2008 18:17

Mmmmm. YAB a bit U but I can see the temptation and the thought would probably cross my mind as well. If you go down this route, you then might have to provide a crime report/insurance details so you will be digging yourself into a ditch so to speak.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

southeastastra · 23/11/2008 18:17

blimey just say you lost it and pay for another pronto.

hope you don't get awarded the class soft toy

Blu · 23/11/2008 18:17

Your poor DS.

How on earth can ALL of those things have happened to it?

Buy a new one.

BecauseImWorthIt · 23/11/2008 18:18

And you even need to ask?

WifeandMotherof4 · 23/11/2008 18:18

YABVU...sorry. What sort of moral is this going to teach a nine year old? That you don't have to take care of things?? He is old enough to look after it surely and he should have put it away from the dog.
Methinks this is a wind up!

Pignata · 23/11/2008 18:18

Well DD pulled the key out when I gave her it to play with (she's only 18 months). DH was cleaning up so put it in the dog's bed this morning. The wine got spilt on it last night when me and DH had a party and that's also when it got burnt.

I don't know how one of the sticks got lost but I think DH snapped the other one by accident when he sat on it.

giraffescantdancethetango · 23/11/2008 18:18

All that happened in 2 days? And after the first of these accidents it didn't occur to put it away somewhere?

WifeandMotherof4 · 23/11/2008 18:19

The more I think the more this has to be a wind up.

giraffescantdancethetango · 23/11/2008 18:19
Blu · 23/11/2008 18:19

wind up!

WifeandMotherof4 · 23/11/2008 18:20

So it got burnt, how? Smoking in the house or sacrificing a local virgin?

LIZS · 23/11/2008 18:20

you've been very careless, if he wasn't going to even be there to practice at home why bring it back in the first place. Own up

Pignata · 23/11/2008 18:20

It's not a wind-up. Poor DS is really upset.

giraffescantdancethetango · 23/11/2008 18:21

What party? Was this the mumsnet xmas party?

WifeandMotherof4 · 23/11/2008 18:21

Explain the burnt bit, please.

thenewme · 23/11/2008 18:21

YABU

You should have looked after it and you should pay for a new one.

LIZS · 23/11/2008 18:21

I bet he is - he has cr&p parents, what example is that.

noonki · 23/11/2008 18:22

youd DH sat on it ?

Weegle · 23/11/2008 18:22

YABU

How on earth did you do all that to it?

Of course you have to pay for a new one.

onthewarpath · 23/11/2008 18:23

Sorry but have to agree with DisasterArea. It seem a bit childish to lie about it. You do not have to tell the school exactlywhat ordeal the thing went through but I think you will have to replace it.

Can I be a bit nosey and ask what on earth happened in your house over the week end pignata do you have other children that have "played" the Glockenspiel or did you just hate the thing? (DD1 comes back from school with a an ocarina, it is solid plastic and indestructible, I might need some advice on how to get rid...)
