To make up a story about something being stolen?

Last week at school, DS (9) was given a Glockenspiel to practice on at home. He has a proper lesson at school once a week.
The one he was given was brand new and he was told to take care of it, any marks etc and he (or we) would have to pay for a new one.

Anyway over the course of the weekend this thing has been chewed by our puppy, had wine spilt all over it, had one of the 'keys' pulled out and the plastic casing has been burnt and melted. Also he brought 3 sticks home with it, one has been lost and another has been snapped.

The worst thing about it is that poor DS has not been home all weekend so has nothing to do with the state it's in.

I'm tempted to make up a story about the car being broken into and smashed up so that the teachers will 'let it go' as we can't afford to buy a new one right now.

AIBU?

Welcome to Mumsnet anyway. AIBU is the wrong place to start joining in here...

Weegle · 23/11/2008 18:23

I bet he is - the way to rectify that is by his parents shouldering responsibility and contacting the school first thing in the morning and offering to pay for a new one.

WifeandMotherof4 · 23/11/2008 18:24

Aren't they wooden? I really am ever keen to know how you melted it.

Blu · 23/11/2008 18:25

If not wind-up, then you should apologise a lot to DS - and preferably buy a new identical one before he next has to take it back. To avoid embarrassing your DS,and to avoid ripping off the taxpayer.

I hope teachers don't ever 'let this go' why should they?

But I still think 'wind-up'.

Pignata · 23/11/2008 18:26

One of our friends stubbed a cigerette out on it It was already knackered by that point so I suppose she assumed it was set to be thrown out.

DH sat on the stick when it was on the couch (out of the case).

this has to be a wind up
you wouldn't have given it to your 18 month old unless you were very stupid

you certainly wqouldn't have put it in the dog bed

honestly it has to be a wind up
if not then wise up and dont be so stupid next time

pay for the replacement and learn form this

Pignata · 23/11/2008 18:27

He needs to take it back on wednesday. I'm looking for one one bay. This one was plastic.

Check your house insurance - you may be insured for accidental damage. Or pet insurance?

Tell the school the truth - that the dog ate DS' homework!

Blu · 23/11/2008 18:28

Is this a wind up in repsonse to the detaile letter that comes home with the school recorder telling us how to look after it? By voiding letting small children play with it, or putting it on a radiaor.

You should, ideally, include a bizarre sexual application in your serial misuse of the glockenspiel...

TrinityRhino · 23/11/2008 18:28

one of your freidns stubbed a fag out on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

seriously
thats ridiculous

giraffescantdancethetango · 23/11/2008 18:30

what classy friends you have.

did the wine spilling incident happen before or after the cigarette burning?

loobeylou · 23/11/2008 18:30

this cannot be for real!!

our Y3 class last year all got given violins for 6 weeks. one mum openly said she was going to leave her DDs on top of the wardrobe to stop her younger ones getting at it. Another refused to take it home on the grounds of their insurance not covering it.

did you not think of doing something like this after the first , or second accident??

your DH put a BRAND NEW instrument that you had been warned to look after IN THE DOG's BED?!

i would expect that school are in fact insured but reporting it STOLEN would require them to have a crime number - how far are you willing to go??

no, it HAS to be a wind up

WifeandMotherof4 · 23/11/2008 18:31

So you have friends that come to your party, smoke in your house and stub cigarettes out in plastic? [huge judgemental emoticon]
Apologise to your DS for being irresponsible and useless as role models, phone the school and pay for a new one and let your ds know you have made a mistake and have minimised any damage by telling the truth and facing your responsiblity.
Then post a link to the thread that inspired this!!!!

giraffescantdancethetango · 23/11/2008 18:31

Blu - I am a bit worried about the where abouts of the 3rd stick. DH "sat" on one and now ones missing...

treedelivery · 23/11/2008 18:32

Throw yourself on school's mercy to make ds feel better, buy a new one plus a donation to funds.

Dunno if I'd mention the cigarette out on it though. Blimey! Child sitting on stick sort of within normal range.

This thread has real comedy value though. Or am I warped?

treedelivery · 23/11/2008 18:33

Its a wind up. It's got to be.

squeakypop · 23/11/2008 18:35

yabvu.

How could it get 3 or 4 different kinds of damage?

You can see the local paper -

"HEARTLESS THIEVES STEAL BOYS GLOCKENSPIEL"

Little Tommy from Blabla Primary school will be unable to take part in the nativatey play this year as heartless thieves broke in to his parents car and stole his glockenspiel which belonged to the school. Little Tommy had taken the instrument home to practice his version of away in a manger. Mrs McKlusky the class teacher said "we are all extreemly saddened, we will start an appeal to buy a new glock so Tommy can join in" PC Plum from Balamory Station says "Obviosuly this time of year is a busy one for us with many break ins in the run up to the festive period. This is a particularly unusual crime in that nothing else appears to have been taken."

IAmNotHere · 23/11/2008 18:41

This is why children should be given recorders.

Glockenspiel my arse.

TotalChaos · 23/11/2008 18:43

this is probably trollocks isn't it? but anyway - yabvu - and rofl at school believing that someone broken into your car and nicked the glockenspiel.

pmsl at frosty's bong idea!!!

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 23/11/2008 18:50

I so hope this is a wind up- your DS brought something home from school, and instead of practicing with it, YOU have allowed it to have all that happen to it? What sort of house can it be when an 18mth old is given something like that to play with, then the puppy gets given the same item to chew, then at a party it gets wine spilt on it AND one of you friends stubbs a fag out on it??????? are you for real???
