surely they are a stone roses tribute band.
they don't have any songs that sound like beatles songs.

Oasis are great but I'm a bit of a fairwearther fan, but....

What is it with the Beatles? I mean, they're ok, they had one or two decent songs but really? All the fuss amazes me, I really can't see it. Someone please explain it to me because I feel like I'm left out of some huge joke!

LouMacca · 20/11/2008 15:14

Oasis definitely inspired by the Stone Rose, which isn't a bad thing as the Stone Roses split way too early. Liam's persona is obviously completely taken off Ian Brown.

However I do think that Noel is a very talented song writer. He has written some amazing tracks - Don't Look Back in Anger, Wonderwall, The Masterplan to name a few.

huge fan base, early death, came at the right time, changed music at the time, music snobberry.
i mean if you had never heard of the beatles and someone played you some of their songs ("i wanna hold your hand","love me do" etc) you wouldn't be able to distinguish them from most pop acts around now.
but they were very experimental for the time (rocky raccoon, twist and shout) and dared to be different so they are remembered for this and in my mind rightly so.
but like with most "greats" there are a lot of people who want to deify them and make them more than they are.as with most music it's subjective. if you like them great,if you hate them equally valid. as the great scroobius pip said "the beatles, just a band"

southeastastra · 20/11/2008 17:53

they were very influential to alot of US bands too - so there

Liam used to work as Stone Roses roadie, v different sounds though comparing both bands.

Love Stone Roses too but Liam is a better singer, they have produced a couple of less than amazing albums but definitely maybe and whats the story are legendary.

peacelily · 20/11/2008 23:03

Sorry Noel was the roadie

VictorianSqualor · 20/11/2008 23:21

Noel was the roadie for the Inspiral Carpets not stone roses.

peacelily · 21/11/2008 08:54

Not according to Tom (Hingley) ex Inspirals lead man who we see sometimes socially

ledodgy · 21/11/2008 08:56

they said he was in this interview

ledodgy · 21/11/2008 08:58

Peacelily i've just seen you are in Manchester (your dd is gorgeous btw) are you going to come to the MN meet up in the printworks next Saturday?

winemakesmummyclever · 21/11/2008 09:54

Aw, used to love the Inspirals! My mate was a serious stalker for Clint Boon, bless her. Friday nights in the Boardwalk dancing our little heads off then freezing to death waiting for the scary last bus home. Ah, happy days!

My sister has given Liam a reflexology treatment and said he smells lovely and is very polite. Not what I would have expected at all.

Noel was def the roadie for Inspirals. Liam had his own band called Rain or something like that - Noel joined & took control.

Would choose Beatles over Oasis anyday - ground breaking idea of singer-songwriters (very at the time), huge and varied musical legacy that has influenced so many great musicians. Ok there was some dodgy and down right weird stuff, (why let Ringo sing?!?) but much better than anything Oasis have produced for the last 10 years.

peacelily · 21/11/2008 21:50

maybe he was being obtuse when we were chatting! he's a very intense bloke with an unusual way about him but very nice all the same.

According to Stone Roses biog was with them too but this was written by a journalist friend of theirs.

No not going to meet up ledogy (that photo of dd is so old now!) have an essay in for postgrad soon so have to knuckle down, also the printworks, oh dear!
