to want defensive newbies to just "get over it!"

I am neither a newbie or a member of the old guard but it seems to be there has been a massive influx of new names some of whom get rather defensive if anyone even mildly takes the piss in the usual spirit of Mumsnet. I love MN and won't be flouncing off just yet but it feels very different at the moment. I know things change and move on and I am all for that but there is a very different and rather touchy feel to it just now. Sort of reminiscent of lunch with my uptight MIL.

With what is currently going on in society atm, it's no surprise that people are edgy and defensive and uptight.

Hopefully things will calm down.

notnowbernard · 18/11/2008 13:36

lol at 'uptight MIL'

I know one thing I am noticing more of and that is the endless bloody baby name threads

God, they are dull

KatieScarlett2833 · 18/11/2008 13:38

To use Bruce Tuckman's theory of people in groups, it seems the newbies are only doing what comes naturally
Forming, Storming, Norming,....Performing.

It takes a while to settle in any new situation.

Blinglovin · 18/11/2008 13:39

Baby name threads are the first thing I hid when I discovered how to personalise!

beanieb · 18/11/2008 13:40

surely being defensive isn't something that newbies alone can be. There are plenty of defensive oldies and plenty of 'newbies' who can take a joke. I think YABU to suggest that it is just Newbies who have a problem with this because to do so automatically suggests a divide.

BTW - I am not being over sensitive - RIGHT!

notnowbernard · 18/11/2008 13:41

But there are so many names on MN I wouldn't be able to distinguish Old from New (apart from the core group of Old MNers tht everyone recognises)

Eg on this thread I recognise only Rhubarb's name

I don't know whether Amethyst or Katy are Old or New (no offence )

Simplysally · 18/11/2008 13:42

How old is old?

amethyst86 · 18/11/2008 13:42

Some really fluffy threads as well that just make me feel bored beyond endurance upon reading the title. There should be an induction course where newbies get to read all the old threads so they know what is expected here .

Oh, I'm an Oldie... (KS sighs and picks up Zimmer Frame)

Hey, don't diss the baby name threads. I bloody love a good baby name thread on MN.... very entertaining.

Rhubarb · 18/11/2008 13:45

I don't know who Rhubarb is, she's a bit gobby though.

amethyst86 · 18/11/2008 13:47

Thats something I am curious about, at what point do you become an oldie? I post under different names as I wouldn't want anyone in RL to fit all the pieces together iyswim. Have probably been on for about 14 months.

OP posts:
Beachcomber · 18/11/2008 13:47

Is it my imagination or have I been seeing some posts from some older posters who haven't been around much of late?

Are they trying to get MN back on track? Hope so.

I sometimes wonder if we wouldn't be better off without the AIBU topic.

Am not new nor old mostly lurker but have been posting more recently to up the input by people who think
MN is the dog's bollocks.

brightongirldownunder · 18/11/2008 13:48

Everyone, just stop talking about how you fancy the presenters on cbeebies. It makes me feel queasy.

As long as there is a mumsnet there will always be piss takers/bitches/trolls/weirdos/moaners. Its just an unwritten rule.

hullygully · 18/11/2008 13:48

There are a lot of prissy-knickers having hissyfits these days. MN is no fun anymore. It's all prissier than thou.

amethyst86 · 18/11/2008 13:49

Yes, definitely over a year as I remember getting severely roasted on a Christmas present opening before Christmas thread I started. Much in the manner of chestnuts over an open fire I should think.

OP posts:
amethyst86 · 18/11/2008 13:50

Thats what I wanted to say hullygully but was trying to be diplomatic.

OP posts:
brightongirldownunder · 18/11/2008 13:53

Ignore the prissy knickers then -they'll soon get the message.

hullygully · 18/11/2008 13:53

Oh, wasn't I? That explains why they all keep getting enraged...

brightongirldownunder · 18/11/2008 13:56

I want to ban Boden from being mentioned personally. Newbies must honestly believe that we all frumpsters - can we at least limit it to one thread?

amethyst86 · 18/11/2008 13:56

I can't ignore them they keep starting dull threads. They seem to be in the majority at the moment and I fear for the future of MN and the advent of , huns, and pictures of smirking Mums and babies.

OP posts:
pingping · 18/11/2008 13:56

I agree with BeanieB!

southeatsastras · 18/11/2008 13:56

'old guard' ffs this is about the 10th time i've read that on here get a grip
