To be annoyed about the lights in oxford and regent street being on all day at our expense?

If the country is in such a bad state money wise then why would they leave the lights on in regent street and oxford street all day long? I'm pretty sure that it is the tax payer that is paying for it all.

They are lovely but in the day time you cannot see the lights so what is the point of wasting electricty? And what about saving the planet? It is not eco friendly to leave lights on all day that no one can see. Also I feel this is mainly for the benifit of the tourists and not the people who live in this country as we are not the ones taking all the pictures.

I feel that money could be put to better use....

Are they left on all day?

nancy75 · 17/11/2008 11:14

the shops pay for it, they are in a traders assc and it pays for the lights .

chloemegjess · 17/11/2008 11:15

Are you sure they are on all day? Most towns turn the off I think? If they are then yes it is a waste of money

chloemegjess · 17/11/2008 11:16

oh nancy, cross posted. Didn't know that!

hullygully · 17/11/2008 11:22

No, but you are startlingly dull.

MsSparkle · 17/11/2008 11:35

Tbh i think all the lights being left on in office buildings during the night are more of a waste of energy and tax payers money (in government buildings) than Christmas lights are.

noonki · 17/11/2008 11:36

dull it may be but YANBU - waste of electricity.

PuppyMonkey · 17/11/2008 11:40

Fortunately I don't live in London (not everyone does, you know), so I don't think I pay for it.

FantasticMissFox · 17/11/2008 11:43

Can we not get into a green discussion. It's christmas ffs.

Eniddo · 17/11/2008 11:44

who cares? I don't live in London

amazing I know

stillstanding · 17/11/2008 11:44

Bah humbug

artichokes · 17/11/2008 11:45

Tax payers don't pay for the London lights. The shops pay as it boosts business.

artichokes · 17/11/2008 11:48

Why are non-Londoners being so chippy???
What would you think if someone posted the same point about the Clifton Suspension Bridge and all the Londoners posted "Who cares, we are nothing to do with Bristol"?

Also the environmental point applies wherever you live. The global warming effects will not be limited to inside the M25.

PuppyMonkey · 17/11/2008 11:51

Non Londoners are all chippy.

I wouldn't care about Bristol either

cantpickyourfamily · 17/11/2008 12:24

I didn't know that the shops paid for the lights, but I still think it is a massive waste of electricity. And I am not a green freak either, but it does seem like a waste of money.

Also that is probably why the shops put the price of everything up at xmas time as they need the exta money to pay for the lights.

Also I know it is a bit of a boring topic to talk about, but the people posting on this thread must be as dull as me...

You sound like my grandad - he always used to complain about the waste of our licence fee on the Top of The Pops lighting .

But it's not Christmas, is it?

artichokes · 17/11/2008 12:33

"it's Christmas, it's all about frivolity"

ummmmm, no

the point of christmas is not frivolity.

even moving beyond the christian significance i would still hope most people do not see the central theme of christmas as frivolity.

choosyfloosy · 17/11/2008 12:36

well frivolity is at least part of it - lord of misrule etc, sacrifice to the sungod. Ok not exactly Christmas, call it the winter festival.

shops pay for it IIRC.

i care more about the huge 'curtains' of heat some shops bang out at the door, causing Christmas shopping to be a miserably uncomfortable experience. I do like the lights but I see the point - it is a waste, really. Maybe they offset it (hollow laugh).

ScottishMummy · 17/11/2008 12:37

i thought oxford st lights were paid for by retail consortium not individual council tax payers

WinkyWinkola · 17/11/2008 12:38

Do you reckon they use those green light bulbs?

WinkyWinkola · 17/11/2008 12:38

I mean the eco friendly ones.
