To be annoyed about the lights in oxford and regent street being on all day at our expense?

If the country is in such a bad state money wise then why would they leave the lights on in regent street and oxford street all day long? I'm pretty sure that it is the tax payer that is paying for it all.

They are lovely but in the day time you cannot see the lights so what is the point of wasting electricty? And what about saving the planet? It is not eco friendly to leave lights on all day that no one can see. Also I feel this is mainly for the benifit of the tourists and not the people who live in this country as we are not the ones taking all the pictures.

I feel that money could be put to better use....

Don't care who pays for it, more bothered about the excessive use of a scarce resource and the consequences for the climate. Same goes for the shops that have their doors wide open and then have either heating/air con (depending on the season) belting out.

I think about the same waste of money everytime I see Wembley stadium on the TV, that ridiculous arc of lights. You must be able to see it from space. It is an obscene amount of lighting and is a terrible waste of money. Makes me laugh every time they come on the telly telling us to switch off lights etc. They want to try turning off some of the bloody lights in London, it would help the whole country.

Simplysally · 17/11/2008 13:37

I think tourists go to other parts of the world other than the UK . One of my friends sent me pics of Christmas lights in Rome last year and I've got some I took in Cork last year. The lights are there to attract shoppers = put money in the tills wherever they are.

I used to work off Regent Street and I don't think the lights used to go on until around lunchtime but I may be wrong.

Let's switch off Piccadilly Circus whilst we're about it .

pregster · 17/11/2008 13:43

You are a complete bore and I feel sorry for your DH.

artichokes · 17/11/2008 13:56

I am at the rudeness on this thread.

I have not understood all the "MN has changed" comment until now.

Why all teh bitchiness and personal comments in response to a poster who was making a totally unpersonal, undramatic and valid point?

Why do some people enjoy putting others down?

DaphneMoon · 17/11/2008 14:01

Well said Arti!

I fully agreed with the OP. I'm sick of being told how to save bloody energy by the Government while they waste it. It's like the washing clothes in cold water lark. Sorry we like clean clothes in our house.

WinkyWinkola · 17/11/2008 15:15

Well, in Japan they only use cold water to wash their clothes. And I would say they generally, are a very clean people.

Apparently, biological washing powder is far less effective in a 60 degree wash than a 30 degree wash.

But ultimately it's up to you whether you do stuff that you consider would reduce pollution etc.

AuraofDora · 17/11/2008 15:23

i dont mind chippyness per se but tis unnecessarily rude i agree artichokes

op tis true no need til later tis a waste, mind you round here they let off fireworks during the day too wtf

pingping · 17/11/2008 15:30

I didn't think they were left on all day I thought they went off at 8am and back on at 3.30pm o maybe I made that up who knows. They are nice lights though.

gracie101 · 17/11/2008 19:49

'Can we go and see the Christmas lights Mummy!!!!???'

'No little one, someone from mumsnet has complained about them as she's premenstrual, so we have to go and see the turned off bulbs instead. IT WILL BE JUST AS GOOD!!'

God bless us, every one!

WinkyWinkola · 17/11/2008 21:44

Ah yes. If you are concerned about wastage and the environment, you must be premenstrual.

That's lame.

gracie101 · 17/11/2008 21:47

Oh lighten up.

Actually... DONT.

think about the POLAR BEARS!! Sit in the dark and

I dont see why some of you are soooo rude, I am just thinking there is no point in wasting the electricity during the day as you cannot see the lights that much.

And every time I switch the tv on someone is talking about how to save money and the planet, even cbbees is always going on about being green.

would it be better if I was on here moaning about how mumsnetters are so rude? as alot of other people seem to be posting about at the moment and maybe they have a point.

Thanks to everyone who stuck up for me and saw that I was making a valid point.
