I have seen people call their 3 year old and even 12 year old Beanie - as in 'Guess what my embryo looks like a bean".

I don't get it?! Let the child have a proper name fgs!

I expect I am just miserable!

I know someone who calls her ds3 'knee-knee' as in knee-high. He is quite small tho...
And a friend os ds1 who was called bubbles long into her 6th year. possibly still is.

compo · 16/11/2008 18:45

ditto bubba, bubs etc , makes me ill to hear it

iamllatro · 16/11/2008 18:46

You are all miserable.

pippibluestocking · 16/11/2008 18:46

Yes, you are. I still call my DDs 6 & 4 all sorts of affectiOnate terms, including Bean, Dot and Baby .... (name) (for the 4 year old). How are are your DCs out of interest?

crokky · 16/11/2008 18:47

They are still your baby no matter how old they are! My mum says my 28 yr old brother is her little baby . My mum still calls me the little name that she called me when I was born. So yes...you are miserable

I agree. I don't mind if families choose to continue with the nickname at home but ds has a friend in his class who everyone is expected to address as "Beanie"! It just sounds daft and over familiar.

EmpressTequilaLaMingMingGnarr · 16/11/2008 18:49

YABU and miserable curmudgeon.

ShowOfHands · 16/11/2008 18:49

Yes YABU. What does it matter what people call their children?

Find it odd, fine. Not do it yourself, fine. Expect others not to do it, YABU.

TheArmadillo · 16/11/2008 18:50

don't do it yourself fine, but don't expect everyone else to only be allowed to choose pet names for their kids that you like.

It's nothing to do with you.

AuraofDora · 16/11/2008 18:50

i would think they meant 'hat' for beanie

cmon its a nickname, albeit a bit unoriginal there are much more important things to get really riled over innit?

NorthernLurker · 16/11/2008 18:53

Well I'm still calling my Miranda 'Miranda the panda' sometimes and she's 10 (She would kill me for mentioning that) My parents still call my sister 'baby' and she's 30. AS long as it's not you addressed as 'ickle scrumpy cuddle' why would you care? YABU

pippibluestocking · 16/11/2008 18:54

Do you actually have any children, Bumble?

BumblBeee · 16/11/2008 18:57

Yes!

Toddler and expecting another. Hence noticing these things.

OP posts:
pippibluestocking · 16/11/2008 18:58

Do you not have affectionate names for your toddler?

BumblBeee · 16/11/2008 19:00

Ah let me clarify also - I have nothing against calling your baby a pet name now and then.

I am referring to telling schools, other parents etc. that that is what you want them (i.e. the world) to call your child also.

So your son has to tell his friends his name is Beanie etc.

OP posts:
BumblBeee · 16/11/2008 19:00

This is what I find kind of sad for the child really.

OP posts:
pippibluestocking · 16/11/2008 19:02

Oooh no, feel quite uncomfortable when anyone other than myself calls either of my DC by one of their pet names (DH never uses them any way). In that case, I think it is abot strange!

pippibluestocking · 16/11/2008 19:02

A bit I mean!

TheArmadillo · 16/11/2008 19:03

save your sadness for those who are actually being abused or neglected.

It's incrediably patronising.

psychomum5 · 16/11/2008 19:22

OFFS, they are nicknames, terms of endearment. I still call mine poppets and pickles and sweethearts.......and I am not planning on stopping anytime soon. eldest is 14!

BumblBeee · 16/11/2008 19:25

Yes but why should they have to use that name at school?!

Children should have some dignity also IMHO

OP posts:
MostlyReindeer · 16/11/2008 19:27

I knew someone nicknamed Beanie at about 21... but that was because he looked like a bean pole!

TheArmadillo · 16/11/2008 19:28

does the kid actually mind? Or are you presuming that they should?

You are being ridiculous imo.

There are plenty of parents out there who are actually doing things that hurt and damage their children. Getting annoyed at someone who is doing neither of those, is not only pointless but also insulting towards that parent.

bronze · 16/11/2008 19:29

I grew up knowing a Beanie. He was still Beanie at 16+ (in fact I had to think hard about what his real name was). It was short for beansprout because he was so lanky and was a nickname much the same as any other nickname.
