Despite repeatedly asking her not to she blows on my one and a half year old food regardless of the fact she chain smokes. Aibu to get wound up?

It's not pleasant re the smoking, but I'm afraid YABU - I wouldn't bat an eyelid if my mum did it. However, your son your rules so if you ask repeatedly she should respect that, but then again is it very respectful of you to ask her not to?

Ashantai · 10/11/2008 19:11

I'd be pissed off too, YANBU imo

lulumama · 10/11/2008 19:12

unless she is blowing smoke on the food, i think you ABU.

just stick his dinner in the freezer for a few mins to cool it down and then no-one needs to blow on it

HeadFairy · 10/11/2008 19:12

Does she blow smoke on the food? If so, they definitely YANBU. However.... Is she trying to be helpful and cool his food down? Perhaps you can get there first and blow on it/cool it down and make sure she knows it's cool enough.

onager · 10/11/2008 19:13

It's not as though he's going to catch anything from the smoke. I thought you were going to say for general hygiene reasons, but I wouldn't worry about that either really as she is bound to be in contact with him quite a bit anyway.

Lotster · 10/11/2008 19:14

YANBU. It's rank.

LittleWhizzingBella · 10/11/2008 19:17

No you're not.

If you've asked her repeatedly not to, she shouldn't do it.

It's slightly neurotic, but I think you're entitled to be - it's the sort of thing which puts your teeth on edge even though you know you're overreacting.

I would scream at her next time she does it.

But that's just my negotiation technique with my mother. It may not work for everyone.

combustiblelemon · 10/11/2008 19:18

You breathe out chemicals for at least 1/2 hour after smoking a cig don't you?

Broodymomma · 10/11/2008 19:18

it's just one of a multitude of things tbh. I can't get near him she she is around and she takes it as an insult if I want to feed him. I don't mind that side of it as it's just a granny thing but he had a lung condition which has left his lungs weaker than a kid his age and I just hate to watch her smoke a fag then blow ok his food 2 mind later. I know I sound pathetic it's just annoying me

compo · 10/11/2008 19:19

I don't get why she's doing it?
Is she cooking the food? Is she spoon feeding the food?

hollyandnoah · 10/11/2008 19:19

does she blow on it to cool it down, or does she blow her cig smoke onto it?
I wouldnt mind blowing to cool down.

onager · 10/11/2008 19:19

How about "If I wanted his bacon smoked I'd have bought it that way!"

QuintessentialShadow · 10/11/2008 19:19

Why is she the one dealing with your dc's food, and not you?

If you do it yourself, surely she has no need to?

flowerybeanbag · 10/11/2008 19:19

What's wrong with blowing on his food? Presumably she's not smoking at the same time? It sounds as though the reason you don't want her to is because she smokes, but does that really make a difference to her general breath, surely only when she's actually smoking?

combustiblelemon · 10/11/2008 19:20

Anyway, it's hardly likely that it needs blowing on at all- you're not going to serve steaming hot food to an 18 month old are you.

Greensleeves · 10/11/2008 19:20

Just be blunt. "Arrrgh, sorry mum but I HATE it when you do that, please don't blow on his food with your faggy breath"

Lotster · 10/11/2008 19:22

Given his condition then you are NBU even more!

My mum always insists on feeding and tries to get me to leave the room! And my son's 2.3 and perfectly capable, I know how irritating this is hon!

Here's a thought, only serve cold dishes when she's there

pointydog · 10/11/2008 19:23

How often exactly does your mum do this blowing?

onager · 10/11/2008 19:23

Okay I get it now. It's because she is pushing in and taking over which I'm afraid mums are inclined to do. You probably do need to be firm, but gentle about you doing things. Also later on you when you have grandchildren you will want to be careful you don't do the same thing without realising it. it's just one of those things

QuintessentialShadow · 10/11/2008 19:24

Agreed. Yanbu

Broodymomma · 10/11/2008 19:25

onager I am pmsl at your post! She insists on cooking his food when I take him to visit. She also insists on feeding him even though I am trying to enocouragw him to feed himself. She does not smoke around him bit does cooking his food then when I say it's too hot that's when she blows on it to cool it. It's just something I don't like and didn't think iwbu but perhaps I am

OP posts:
flowerybeanbag · 10/11/2008 19:28

So it's not the blowing, it's all the 'insisting' on this and 'insisting on that. YANBU to be cross about that, but you just need to put your foot down. Grandmothers don't get to insist in my book.

Broodymomma · 10/11/2008 19:31

I need to find a backbone. Today she emailed me to say she was concerned I am not a good enough driver to be driving ds around. 15 years with a clean license and not one accident she is driving me nuts!

OP posts:
flowerybeanbag · 10/11/2008 19:34

That's an outrageous thing to say!

In all seriousness it sounds like you do need to grow a backbone sharpish, she sounds as though she is constantly undermining you and it sounds as though only a firm stand will stop her.

imnotmamagbutshelovesme · 10/11/2008 19:34

I was going to say YANBU anway but now I have read he has a comprimised immune system YADNBU!
