To want to nuke the night garden

I'm sorry, but i just can't take any more fecking iggle piggle and tombliboos and their mind destroying gobledegook. I only have to hear their out of tune piano playing in the background and i want to reach for the brandy!! It is utter utter shite!

I actually started a thread when it came out singing its praises but now i just loathe it, and my DD doesn't like it either. So, please mr BBC can we have it removed from the bedtime slot where i like to chill out with my DD and not have to listen to some sort of frantic jazz type music (you know, the sort with no melody/rhythm that makes my hair stand on end). Can't we just have an hour of charlie and lola instead - i heart charlie and lola.

Not only that, if you want to buy your child a scooter/bike/lunchbox/pjs/well, anything really - chances are it will have that blue little runt on it somewhere

I hate it with a passion, but unfortunately my 1yo ds seems transfixed by it! As far as I can see there is no discernible storyline and the characters are boring! But there must be something in it since so many kids seem to love it

In conclusion, YANBU in hating it, but many small children might disagree

SummerC · 10/11/2008 22:28

Scifinerd - my apologies. I didn't realise you knew her personally. Very sorry

DaDaDa · 10/11/2008 22:28

YABU. It's verrrrry relaxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxing. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Apart from the episode where the Tombliboos play their free jazz epic interspersed with Upsy Daisy screeching. I'll agree with you on that.

crokky · 10/11/2008 22:28

YAB totally U!

I love it!

My mum found the little teddy of Mrs Pontypine in a shop the other day. She is really rare and DS (2) was thrilled! I was thrilled as well, Mrs Pontypine is cool.

thumbwitch · 10/11/2008 22:30

I have unfortunately absorbed the theme tune into my unconscious and find myself humming it from time to time (gah!). However, I find it intensely mind-numbing, mostly because each "character" can only repeat their own name over and over - how is that helpful to developing children's minds?

DS has only "watched" it once, twice at most (he's only 11mo) when I've been desperate to get on with some work and he wants to "help".

blackrock · 10/11/2008 22:35

Derek Jacobi has been around for years.

Twinklemegan · 10/11/2008 22:38

I find it bloody disturbing I have to say. And I could cheerfully murder whoever started that thread in Active Convos about being able to play the theme on a child's piano. It's been on my brain ever since.

DS hardly watches any TV, but unfortunately ITNG is on at that sleepy time when I'm most likely to sit down with him. Hence we've caught it a few times and I'm convinced there's something that gets in their subconscious as he now seems to know all the characters on a very few viewings. I think he's too old for it now as well.

It's aimed at the under 2's for sure, and IMO it is very wrong to aim a programme at such young uns.

chloemegjess · 10/11/2008 22:39

I don't understand. If you don't like the program and nor does your DD then can you not just watch another channel?

wabbit · 10/11/2008 22:44

I think you're probably too old for 'In the Night Garden' Maybe try another channel???

thumbwitch · 10/11/2008 22:44

CMJ, if you only have terrestrial tv there isn't any other useful child-oriented programme on at that time.

FattipuffsandThinnifers · 10/11/2008 23:01

Well I don't know how you could live with yourself being responsible for the deaths of the teeny tiny Pontypine children.

But 'fraid I think YABU, my 18 mo absolutely loves it, and why not?

MadCreamLady · 11/11/2008 10:02

"I don't understand. If you don't like the program and nor does your DD then can you not just watch another channel? "

D'OH

This is the true ethos of mumsnet - a formum where parents can help other parents with the many hurdles of child rearing

pingping · 11/11/2008 10:03

YABU turn the TV off or over if you don't like it.

In the Night Garden is better than teletubbies

sorkycake · 11/11/2008 10:08

ITNG has saved me from many a meltdown with our 21 mo, it's like instant sedation!
If I'm in need of Gin which I sadly can't have atm, I find it a rather good substitute for 20 minutes whilst I gather forces for the next episode of combative parenting.

I agree with the tombliboo jazz, daisy screech epi. It's a new form of torture that one.

sunnygirl1412 · 11/11/2008 10:09

Tidey asked:
"To think that an actor held in such high regard is saying 'Icka acka nicka nakka micka macka moo' or whatever the hell it is. Does he get paid a lot to do that?"

He probably does get paid a lot to do it, Tidey - but only a highly trained and experienced Actor coud deliver these lines with such sincerity and feeling.

Pinkjenny · 11/11/2008 10:15

YANBU - Balamory is the way forward.

Wizzska · 11/11/2008 10:29

YABU - I love it. Am a bit worried about Iggle Piggle's health though, he's always falling over, and the Pontypines seem to have awful flatulence - goodness knows what their diet must be like.

I think you should save your venom for Lazy Town or the Tweenies.

Starbear · 11/11/2008 10:32

I hate it and have trained Ds to shout to me when it comes on so I can put something else on for him. I wish it was on some other time as we quite like half hour of T.V before the bedtime routine. I just wish it was Charlie and Lola (I would enjoy it too)then story. A bit of me would like to ween us out of this but Hey Ho!

onthewarpath · 11/11/2008 10:34

Yabu, The sweetest thing I have seen in a long time for DCs.

ohIdoliketobebesidethe · 11/11/2008 10:37

YANBU - for some reason dds ignore it (even 18mo old). I would also rather have endless repeats of Charlie and Lola. Completely agree about merchandise too.

(Ds is Mac and gets called macca pacca too often )

ChubbyDick · 11/11/2008 10:37

YABU, my 11 month old loves it which means he sits still and calms down while it's on!
It's worth all the irritating-ness for that alone!

mumof2andabit · 11/11/2008 10:39

yanbu intg is evil!!!!! We hate it and ds has never seen it although rather worringly can recognise the theme tune....

GooseyLoosey · 11/11/2008 10:41

YANBU. I hate it, ds(5) and dd(4) hate it and dh hates it. Ds and dd shout "boring" if it comes on. The only television my children generally watch was half an hour before bedtime and I am now required to ensure that Charlie and Lola is recorded for them or another programme that at least has a plot and words, or (God forbid) actually read them a story instead of my lovely half hour vegging.

babymt · 11/11/2008 10:51

I got totally flamed for similar comments so good luck!

But I TOTALLY agree. They are annoying little bastards and I wish it would f off the tele. I've got it accidentally on right now as wasn't paying attention to the schedule. Actually sod this I've changed it now. It just grates my brain I hate it so much!

So YANBU

tw70 · 11/11/2008 10:56

Haven't you learned to tune it out yet? I'm sitting here with my DS right now, and he is half watching it (the other half of his attention is on my laptop and trying to close it for me!!! grrrr...)
