After all the recent trouble with trolls and regulars like cod being driven away by someone she knew in rl I suddenly find I feel like i need to be annoymous on mn.

I used to have pic's of me and dc all over my profile but now i'm worried in case someone i know in rl recognises me and takes offence to something i posted.

Am i just being paranoid?

OP posts:
Liffey · 10/11/2008 20:42

Would they DO that for you!!!???

When I asked them, they wouldn't, and I was pretty distressed at knowing that somebody knew who I was. Everybody in rl knew some or all of what I'd posted here, but you know how you feel more inclined to share one thing with one person, but something else with another. It jsut depends really. So no ONE person knew 100% of what I'd psoted here. But I am not secretive in rl.

But still, it was the underhandedness of somebody doing a driveby I know who you are that left me so upset. I emailed mn to ask them to delete all my old posts and they wouldn't they told me they didn't like to do that as it meant lots of threads didn't make sense. But they wouldn't tell me the email address of the person who knew who I was either.

ScottishMummy · 10/11/2008 20:43

ok thanks didn't know that.i just launch in

NotBigNotClever · 10/11/2008 20:45

Well, I hadn't been here very long at the time so there weren't all that many threads that got disrupted by having my posts deleted. I had also been a bit (cough) indiscreet and uncomplimentary about my (dead) exh - and my dd found out my posting name and I found her trying to find my posts on MN.

brokenrecord · 10/11/2008 20:46

I namechange regularly for the reasons already given. It's not even exactly that someone might recognise you - it's just that you really are telling everyone when you put it up here - and what you say is really out of your hands once it's posted.

I always wondered how the regulars coped with being so identifiable, but now it seems it was fraught with potential problems for them too.

NotBigNotClever · 10/11/2008 20:51

It's also an entirely open forum, which means that if you google your name you will quite often find that google will pick up posts from MN. The only other places I post regularly (and in my RL name, in fact) are closed, subscription-only forums, which aren't touched by search engines. (Although these are forums related to work, so I'm not free with personal info there either).

jujumaman · 10/11/2008 20:53

Yup, I namechanged because I realised i'd given a lot too much away and it made me uneasy. Realised I couldn't attend a meet up until I started a clean slate.

It is a tricky balance between enjoying the camaraderie on here and keeping a low profile in rl.

tiredsville · 10/11/2008 20:54

That must have been a nightmare Liffey.
It's easier to dish the dirt to a stranger than to someone in RL, that is why MN is very appealing. I haven't posted anything juicy here yet, bit cautious. But when I do, i'm definitely gonna name change!

BroccoliSproccoli · 10/11/2008 20:59

Have read this thread and changed my name slightly to preserve annonimity .

forevercleaningdogploppers · 10/11/2008 21:31

am preserving mine too

NotBigJustBolshy · 10/11/2008 21:34

Just a quick tweak every so often, eh, people?

I've changing my name again. It's time. Liffey says over and out.

TheNewsMonger · 10/11/2008 22:32

I like this name! I'll try not to reveal everything from my height and town to children's names etc etc etc this time round.

StickLadyLove · 10/11/2008 22:59

Don't know if anyone's still watching this - but I am new and have a question! If you change your name temporarily, or alter it slightly, does your 'old' name get kept for you or does it become fair game for anyone joining Mumsnet? So, for example, forevercleaningdogploppers does that mean that forevercleaning is now an available name?
Hope all this makes sense.
I'm off to bed now, will check and see if I have a reply in the morning! Thanks in advance.

chipmonkey · 10/11/2008 23:04

God, Liffey that is awful! And not nice of them to namechange to do it! So they could work out who you were but you couldn't work out who they were! Oddly enough, I will post freely enough here about my job, etc but am much more reticent on rollercoaster or magicmum! Even though I am posting under the same name!

forevercleaningdogploppers · 10/11/2008 23:21

stick - the original anem remains yours and you can revert back to it at any time.

So nobody else would be able to have the name forevercleaning (who on earth would want it cos it sounds like too much bloody hard work!) so if you are concerned that someone could pick up your identity and carry on in your name, then no that cant happen iyswim

StickLadyLove · 11/11/2008 08:45

Many thanks Forever. I rest assured that no rogue StickLady shall infiltrate mumsnet and start posting AIBU threads about touchy subjects!

TheNewsMonger · 11/11/2008 09:18

Yes chipmonkey, I am VERY careful on rollercoaster, I even posted a bogus thread about needed a dentist in the Wexford. I thought I might have over done it with the personal info, and I panicked. But the thing is on roller, you can delete your own bollix! WHY can we not do that here?!?!??? why oh why not??

I have recognised a few people on rc. My cousin for one. I sent her a pm, saying hi [her name] moi, your cousin here! And then, I without discussion she name-changed. I didn't bother because on rc, I cull my posts really frequently.

My very first screen name on RC was really stupid, it was first half of my first and last name + my year of birth, like say just an eg here, Clodagh Carter CloCar71 REALLY far too obvious.

TheNewsMonger · 11/11/2008 09:25

also on rc you can edit your mistakes!!! in the wexford area I mean. and. 'then, wihtout discussion'. I must pay attention to my bollix and type slightly better bollix.

Talia22 · 11/11/2008 09:36

I name change about once a month because I would die of embarrassment if anyone in RL identified me.
In fact, I've named changed so often I have to resort to numbers now .

BroccoliSproccoli · 11/11/2008 13:12

What's rollercoaster?

TheNewsMonger · 11/11/2008 15:09

www.rollercoaster.ie 'forum for irish parents'

Like Mumsnet but not as good, and because of the more unisex title, more Dads on it.

Starbear · 11/11/2008 15:58

I flip backwards and forwards. Because of my profession I hope under the other name I can be of practical help. But it can be a big give away and some people might have a pop at me for no other reason than my job. I'm going to have to name change now I've said that ops!

ScottishMummy · 11/11/2008 18:27

ChillyTilly · 11/11/2008 18:32
