...not to let dh throw unopened milk away just 'cos its out of date?

sunnygirl1412 · 06/11/2008 23:16

Dh just informed me that we're almost out of milk because he's got to throw 3 litres away - one unopened litre of skimmed and an unopened 2 litres of semi-skimmed. When I told him to check first to see if it was still useable he shouted at me that 'you CAN'T use out of date milk!!'

When I asked him what he thought we did before milk had best before dates on, his answer was, 'Get sick.' Of course we didn't sniff the milk and discard it if it was off, did we!!

Is it unreasonable to expect him to have the sense to open the milk and smell it - and if it smells ok it will be ok.

TBH he's being a bit of an arse tonight - he has a very short temper and no people skills, so life can be a bit difficult when he gets a strop on about something - hence I'm hanging out here rather than going to bed. Sorry to offload.

I would freeze it!

debzmb62 · 06/11/2008 23:19

how out of date is it

controlfreakyBANG · 06/11/2008 23:19

silly arse....

everyone knows you give it a good sniff and if in any doubt 'tis your duty as a parent to sip a bit before puring on dcs weetabix....

make sure you send him out first thing to get more.

... silly arse.

pointydog · 06/11/2008 23:23

I've found the dates on milk to be very reliable. Maybe depends on your fridge. Wouldn't use it myself. Can't stand milk past its best.

sunnygirl1412 · 06/11/2008 23:23

Only a day or two, debz.

Glad I'm not totally unreasonable.

sunnygirl.

PS - would it be really evil to make him taste it before it goes on the ds's weetabix??

I am the fussiest person about milk and can sniff out milk on the turn before anyone else can. (Being forced to drink school milk in all weathers at my "waste not want not" catholic school made me rather phobic about it!)

But I often find milk lasts at least a few days beyond it's best before date. A quick sniff from my expert nose would always be able to tell if it was even a smidgeon off.

Ashantai · 06/11/2008 23:30

I'd chuck it, mainly cos i dont want to be mopping up piles of vomit and diarrhoea

SubRosa · 06/11/2008 23:31

As long as it's no more than 2 days past its sell-by, it'll probably be ok. If it smells ok, then it is ok. Having said that, I don't give DD out-of-date milk, but I drink it in my coffee all the time.

overthehill · 06/11/2008 23:41

What a waste of milk! I agree with the others that the sniff test is the thing, followed by the taste test if you still have some residual doubt. Don't know how much baking/cooking you do, but things like scones are positively improved by the use of sour milk and quiches, cheese sauces etc will also be fine if it's just a bit 'tired'. If you try and heat it and it starts to separate, that's when you know you should throw it away!

NCbirdy · 06/11/2008 23:45

NO! You all have it wrong! You don't taste it first, you put it on the weetabix and then look for those little bitty bits it gets as it turns. Bitty bits - can the whole bowl and get out new milk, no bitty bits - serve with a clear conssience!

To the op, YANBU

BexieID · 06/11/2008 23:46

DP is very anal about this kind of thing (won't eat anything out of date) but will have out of date goats milk!

BexieID · 06/11/2008 23:46

LOL @ bitty .

snoopdog · 06/11/2008 23:53

add it to a cuppa and see if it floats/seperates,

there is your answer,

i would not drink it myself,

but i am off milk phobic expert,

like someone else said,

given it at school in all weathers

smartiejake · 07/11/2008 00:14

I had problems with my adenoids and was constantly sick on milk as a child. They still force fed me it regardless of what my mum and the doctor told them at school
[anti-catholic emoticon]!

I can positively heave at the mere thought of school milk!

snoopdog · 07/11/2008 00:17

jake,

did your milk come in cartons have pictures on from different countries?

hungary always had the tastiest milk

sunnygirl1412 · 07/11/2008 09:35

Well I remember when milk came in glass bottles with no use-by date on it (cue old-tyme music and black-and-white footage of cobbled streets and horse-drawn carts) - and even when eggs came without dates printed on them, and my mum used to crack each one individually into a special cup (the blue and white one that had lost its handle) so she could sniff-test it before adding it to a cake.

I've always wondered how it is that the chickens manage to date-stamp the eggs - genetic modification, I suppose - or one very well trained bird going round furtling under all the other birds, finding the eggs and getting out her library stamp and ink pad!!

Incidentally, the disputed milk was used on ds3's rice krispies this morning (we have run out of weetabix - I am such a bad mother), and he made no complaints and didn't go green, so I think we're OK.

i,d us it if it smelt ok but only if it was like 1 day out .i found that skimmed milk tends to turn easier than semi skimmed
remember its not going to kill you if its out just make you want to vomit !!
don,t know if you notice on some products we buy from chill cabnet has the date on and in a little tiny box next to date it,ll have a (2) next to it and this means can be ok 2 days after date on packet there see a bit of useless info {grin}its not on everything btw

DiscoDizzy · 07/11/2008 10:27

It depends whether it was its best before date or its use by date. If it was use by, i'd throw it.

mumof2222222222222222boys · 07/11/2008 10:28

At work we get loads of milk delivered and I ALWAYS sniff it and ignore the best before date...because it doesn't always get put in the fridge it goes off quicker.

If it smells ok/tastes ok/ doesn't have nasty floaty bits.....it is ok.

BB dates are a good guide, but use your nose.

YANBU. He is BU.

YANBU but I would of thrown it away I two went to a Catholic school family Irish catholic so as a child was forced to eat whatever was put in front of me regardless if it was out of date. Always told that I should be grateful for my out of date milk on my breakfast as there was starving African children that would give anything to be in my place

hidetheribbons · 07/11/2008 12:41

Don't chuck it!
If the milk is off you can still use it in scones, makes them rise better.
