...not to let dh throw unopened milk away just 'cos its out of date?

Dh just informed me that we're almost out of milk because he's got to throw 3 litres away - one unopened litre of skimmed and an unopened 2 litres of semi-skimmed. When I told him to check first to see if it was still useable he shouted at me that 'you CAN'T use out of date milk!!'

When I asked him what he thought we did before milk had best before dates on, his answer was, 'Get sick.' Of course we didn't sniff the milk and discard it if it was off, did we!!

Is it unreasonable to expect him to have the sense to open the milk and smell it - and if it smells ok it will be ok.

TBH he's being a bit of an arse tonight - he has a very short temper and no people skills, so life can be a bit difficult when he gets a strop on about something - hence I'm hanging out here rather than going to bed. Sorry to offload.

sunnygirl.

Ha ha, am so glad other people do the "sip and drip" test for their dc's weetabix

I'd taste it. I've personally found you can usually use them for a day beyond the best by date if they've always been stored correctly. So generally okay if from supermarket, but not if from corner shop.

YANBU!!!
what terrible waste!
you caneasily tell if it's off by smelling it. If tis silightly sur, cook with it or you can make soft cheese.
(umm..warm to blood heat, add lemonjuice, eave to curdle, strain for a day, presss out liquid...not very tasty but still nutritious!)

The sniff test doesnt work everytime, not for everybody, it depends on your nose and its sensitivity to those kinds of smell.

Smelling and even tasting the chemical reactions in decomposing food like that is an art.
My sister had her own panel of "special people" when she was a scientist within the food industry. Some for the smell and some for the tasting. I cant for the life of me taste if food is off, or borderline, she can. And her panel had that special skill.

Few things make you sicker than off milk.

There is only ONE test: The boil test. Pour a little in a pot, bring to the boil and if it curdles it is NOT OK, and if it doesnt, you can use it.

I would use it only for cooking though, pancakes, porridge.... But I am very anal about these kinds of things! My friend ate a cheese that was 6 months out of dat when we were on holiday in Athens, I wouldnt even smell it! She was fine. I am sure I wouldnt have been fine. Anxiety would have eaten me, if nothing else....
