AIBU to be annoyed that my colleague gave my child a pringle, jam donut and a whole grape!

I know I'm not - shes 10 months FGS!
Work meeting today, my day off, needed to be there, no childcare so took DD2 with me!
Colleagues all fine and helpful but one (who has 3 DC I might add)....first gave DD2 a salted pringle and looked amazed when I cringed and said she hasnt ever had a crisp as I tried to scoop it out her mouth, she then gave her a bit of sugar coated jam donut and laughed and said dont say thast her first donut and I looked on in shock, but when she tied to pop a whole grape in her mouth I had to say NO she might choke so she broke it in half and popped a large half in her mouth which she then proceeded to almost choke on
At this stage I just took her off her
Now I am far from precious about what she eats she is my NSB after all but come on AIBU!!!!!!
Well she has just had home made stew and a breast feed so hopefully not toooo damaged

I have forgotten that babies don't 'eat'.

my youngest 3 and I keep thinking i should offer friend's baby bit of what we're having!

You just forget honestly!

LynetteScavo · 05/11/2008 17:27

This is a very good example of why you shouldn't take your baby to work with you.

HaventSleptForAYear · 05/11/2008 17:29

Ahem. I think DS2 was eating all those things at 10mths.

Ever heard of BLW (baby led weaning)?

I can't see a 10 mth old choking on a crisp.

Your friend has 3DC - her second was probably weaned on fish and chips like mine!

Sorry, I think YABU, especially with the "damaged" bit!

VinegarTits · 05/11/2008 17:32

Oh come, shes hardly going to be damaged

Did she love the jam doughnut? i love them

HangingbaublesofBethlehem · 05/11/2008 17:33

haven't slept, some babies are eating stuff like that at 10 months but not all by any means - my dd didn't eat any solids till well over a year. Anyway, it's not just about the size of the food it's about the crapness of pringles and doughnuts. I would have been pissed off too, imo you never give a baby any food without asking the parent anyway.

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/11/2008 17:36

not ideal foods but she won't be damaged by such teeny amounts - obviously your colleaguie should have asked before feeding your child anything - tsk...

IWonderIfMamaGStillLovesMe · 05/11/2008 17:36

YANBU but maybe next time you wil make it clear you don't want her fed. Maybe she did it to wind you up after you said you didn't want her having crisps.

snigger · 05/11/2008 17:37

I doubt very much it was done in malice.

People have different values, people forget, and people sometimes get so geed up over the appearance of a cute baby they want to 'mother' it, even in the face of the mothers wishes.

She won't be damaged at all - my BIL is a GP and has to actively counsel mothers against weaning onto Pot Noodle, and I'm really not kidding .

She's fine, she'll be sneaking so many pringles and so much sugar in playground trades in four years time your head will spin

ForeverOptimistic · 05/11/2008 17:38

People without children just don't think, I feel really embrassed when I think back to what I gave children before I had any of my own. The grape thing would have annoyed me, common sense tells you that you should not feed a baby something that size.

loler · 05/11/2008 17:38

It's so true that you forget. My ds2 is 14 months and I have already forgoton when you give what. But I also found that with him (my no.3) I was even less precious particularly as the other 2 stuck whatever they were having in his mouth. I also found that I quite often forgot to take food for him to eat so had to 'improvise'. So from my view having 3 dc would probably make her less fussy rather than more!

christywhisty · 05/11/2008 17:38

Are you really being serious if you are then YABU.Like everything else none of it is very bad in moderation. Both mine were eating everything we were at 10 months.

compo · 05/11/2008 17:39

yes she should have asked you
but what was your baby doing there when people were eating doughnuts and pringles?
was it a party?

TinkerBellesMum · 05/11/2008 17:41

I think Tink had eaten some equally rubbish food at that age she had a balanced diet so I didn't see the problem with the odd bit of junk food. At that age she ate 10 grapes a day for breakfast and sometimes others for a snack.

I wouldn't give food to another baby without speaking to the parents though, so on that YANBU.

Fillyjonk · 05/11/2008 17:47

no that is shite food for a 10 mo. and I have 3 dc.

i am sure it was not done in malice but yanbu to be grumpy.

she was doing her best but you are right to feel grumpy...hmm does that make sense?

cantpickyourfamily · 05/11/2008 17:47

my dd would of chocked on crisps at that age, some people will let their babies eat things like that and that is up to them but they should know better than to feed someone elses child that kind of food.

But I think she was trying to be nice when feeding all this rubbish.

I hate it when family members feed my dd loads of sweets and rubbish. I do give her chocolate if I am eating some but that is about it.

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 05/11/2008 17:51

Jeez, I left my DS with my mum and dad for a night away with hubby for our anniversary when he was 8 months old.....

On our return I was informed that he liked stilton, and preferred white to red wine.....

The sad thing is I know my dad wasn't joking....

macdoodle · 05/11/2008 19:08

Okey looks like IAMBU
To clarify this is my SECOND child, and I am a far from precious mum......she eats like a horse and mostlyof what we are eating, a mix of BLW and spoon feeding - I have a 7 year old and the baby pretty much has what she does MINUS the crap!
Come on pringles are salt laden, and the donut was covered in sugar, and as for the grape - she does eat them cut into non chokable sizes (this was a big round whole grape)....
Howver the "damaged" commnt was extremely TIC but it appears we have a sens of humour failure!
This was a lunchtime meeting (the only time we are free in the day as we are a group of GP's LOL) hence aforementioned food - and my day off hence baby into work day
Would have preferred she asked before shoving junk food into my babies moth thats all....but ok then maybe a leeeetle unreasonable

Cupofteaplease · 05/11/2008 19:08

I would have stressed about the grape being whole, but that's it I'm afraid.

dd2 was BLW'd, so has been eating finger foods from the word go (well, 6 months, but you catch my drift!)

We are VERY relaxed when it comes to food and believe a balanced diet will not be 'damaged' by a taste of doughnut or a single crisp, even at 10 months.

macdoodle · 05/11/2008 19:09

oooooooooh the damagedcomment was NOT serious thought that was obvious but clearly not!
And I'm sorry but DD1 is limited on junk food amd so will DD2 be !!

OP posts:
Haribolicious · 05/11/2008 19:18

YANBU - I would never give a child anything to eat without asking first as you just don't know re: allergies BUT I can understand work colleagues that don't think about these things
I agree with you about limiting junk food - my philosophy is to limit it for as long as I control the diet as another MNetter has already said, they'll be eating enough junk food later on in their lives.
In threads like these, I'm fed up with everyone going on about PFB's....this has nothing to do with it.

MsSparkle · 05/11/2008 19:21

It's wierd but you do forget that babies don't "eat" as such. I was like that with my dd, very limited on junk food, a crisp would seem like the end of the world when she was baby. Now though she is 2 and i am more relaxed about things. My dd has a very healthy diet though and she doesn't have loads of junk food but a crisp and abit of a donut just seems like the end of the world to me anymore.

You just seem to relax about the small things as they get older. It's when dd finds my tin of Hereos i have stashed away for later that i worry...

macdoodle · 05/11/2008 19:21

SHE ISNT A PFB...........

................even if it was relevant!

OP posts:
macdoodle · 05/11/2008 19:23

AAAGGGGHHHHHH SHE ISNT A PFB - I HAVE A 7 YEAR OLD AS WELL - who eats plenty of crisps donuts....and grapes....awright!!!!
