For the last two weeks kids on the estate have been setting them off till all hours in the morning GRRR!!

But last night walking down the road with My friends elderly MIL and some bastard kids thought it would be hilarious to set a firework off by lying it down and shooting it from one side of the road towards us. The fucking firework exploded inches from our faces now my ear bloody hurts and My Friends MIL jumped nearly out of her skin and had a panic attack.

I am sick of these shit fireworks when I was kid I was too scared to even think about setting one off I still dont being 25 grrrrr

So AIBU and if I am not will you all sign my Petion please

Not unreasonable. I know someone who was badly injured when someone lobbed a lit firework into a crowded pub

TBH, I think that fireworks should only be sold to licensed displays.

Bubbaluv · 31/10/2008 16:07

That's how it is in Aus. Basically only organised professional events can let of fireworks. You have to get a licence and liaise with the local fire authorities or they come around and hose you and then fine you.

cocoleBOO · 31/10/2008 16:08

Our local news showed a photo of a 10 yo boy who blew his hand off on Monday, it was just horrible. He's only left with his thumb .

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 31/10/2008 16:09

I think you already need a license to sell fireworks. I used to work in a shop that sold them (over 20 years ago, though) and I recall visits from the fire brigade to check our storage facilities.

wessexghoul · 31/10/2008 16:11

Do you mean the introduction of a fireworks license? So that kids can't buy them; only people organising public displays? I agree with you, if so - it's a right pita round here a the moment too.

I think all sellers have to be licensed already.

noonki · 31/10/2008 16:13

Public displays only - vote winner imo

mabanana · 31/10/2008 16:14

I love our garden fireworks. Just a few friends round and all over by 8pm. So much more fun than a big display IMO.

stretchmarkSCREAM · 31/10/2008 16:15

Where do I sign? I agree that fireworks shouldn't be sold to the general public. We have kids lighting bonfires behind our house, then throwing fireworks into the fire They are explosives ffs!

pingping · 31/10/2008 16:18

I mean people buying the fireworks as the age restrictions dont work since its all the kids getting there hands on them

StreachmarkSCREAM I am going to sort it out and I will find you on Mumsnet ;-D

I totally agree with OP. Hve had no trouble round here (used to at old house) but even so I feel so awful for people who have to live in fear where there are lots of yoofs mucking about with them.

stretchmarkSCREAM · 31/10/2008 16:22
Grin
pingping · 31/10/2008 16:22

my whole estate is like one big firework display a person in the block behind me said they came out of there flat into the stairway and a firework shot past her made her 4yr ds pooh himself.

I am not sure why anyone would think shooting fireworks towards an old lady was funny and the worst thing was the police on bikes had just gone round the corner teens today have no fear

It pisses me right orf that I can't even contemplate walking past our local swingpark after dark for the next two weeks.

The Age Restriction thing has been a complete damp squib (arf); it's worse than ever now.

I wish there was a solution that didn't stop perfectly nice peeps like mabanana having private bonfire parties in their gardens though.

WilyWombat · 31/10/2008 16:33

Well the age restriction on buying them obviously isnt working is it, either the shops are still selling them to children or there are adults who think it is OK to buy fireworks for children.

I would totally support a ban on sales for "domestic" use. Limit them to organised events, just tell me where to sign...our dogs turn into nervous wrecks at this time of year with the kids setting them off.

WilyWombat · 31/10/2008 16:35

To clarify I would wholeheartedly support a ban on the purchase of fireworks without a licence.

pingping · 31/10/2008 16:45

WilyWombat I am in the same situition after about 4.30pm you have to be very careful where you walk.

Age restrictions are bull shit and are not working at all these kids last night looked about 13ish

we have had a local pillar box exploded by a fire work this week. Last yr or year before the local yobs were blowing up the dog poo bins. Sh*t blown to smithereens all over the park! Really funny, not.

I taught a child who had to have facial surgery after a firework was lobbed into her garden, she was a baby in her pram and it hit her in the face. She has permanent disfigurement.

kids should be scared/treat these things with respect. They do not seem to understand the concepts of pain etc. Life is one big cartoon/video game.

personally I am for organised displays only and would like to ask.....where are the parents when kids as young as 10 are doing this stuff??

hullygully · 31/10/2008 16:48

yes, or no. i can't remember

WilyWombat · 31/10/2008 16:54

I dont know on the whole but some of the kids in my road are out all times of the evening, their parents are either working or are single and out with their mates.

How aware are children now of the dangers of fireworks - is this something they learn in school now because the parents whose children are roaming about at night are also the ones who wouldnt take the time to teach their children about the dangers arent they.

WhereWolfTheWildThingsWere · 31/10/2008 16:55

why?

I would support a ban on fireworks except for public displays.

I went to school with a girl who ended up with a badly burned face when a neighbouring kid threw a firework at her 'for a laugh'

CarGirl · 31/10/2008 17:56

they are as a dangerous as handguns so why aren't they restricted like handguns are?

gallusbesom · 31/10/2008 19:10

I would much rather than they weren't on sale at all although if they had to sell them the should only be allowed to sell them on the 5th for one day only and restricted to a small amount per person - at least that way we wouldn't think we were living in a war zone for two weeks either side of the 5th
