AIBU getting annoyed at a 4 year old "grass" in my sons nursery?

when i picked him up today, the teacher at the gate told me my ds had initially refused to tidy up pens he'd been using, but after being reminded of his "star chart", he put them away.

when i went into the class, a wee girl (who ia very bright and articulate) told me my ds had made a mess. i said, "but he tidied it up". she replied "no he never". i then replied "well miss told me he did".

i then just walked away from her. but i am really annoyed!!! this is not the first time she has told me tales about him! i am thinking that if she tries it again i am going to tell her that i get a full report from the nursery teacher and i don't want her to tell me any tales about my ds.

what do you think? is saying something to her unreasonable? if you were her parent would you go nuts at me? AIBU because she is only 4?

OMG!!! the trials of nursery...

Tortington · 27/10/2008 22:50

i think you should have it out with the 4 year old in the middle of class

muggglewump · 27/10/2008 22:51

Tell tales are so annoying.

I have it all summer when the kids are playing out, they all do it. It got to the point where I'd open the door and without even looking bellow "If there's no tears or blood I don't care!"
And shut the door again.
They take the tales to the nicer, more responsible other parents now

FrankAwenstein · 27/10/2008 22:57

4 year olds tell tales - it is what they do! She is 4 for goodness sake; leave her alone.

4 year olds don't do it from malice. they do it because it is normal for them to report the truth of what happened in front of them.

I would behighly suprised if your own child, your own DS, has never told a tale before now too.

Just remind them that telling tales isn't always a kind thing to do and move on. And do it gently without shouting or seeming mean yourself - be the grown up here!

matildax · 28/10/2008 19:21

not here with any words of wisdom, but just had to let you all know that when i read the op on new messages, i thought it was going to be about a old dusty grass pot plant in the nursery, that was perhaps unhygenic!!! (sp)
......... its been a very, very long day

Pennies · 28/10/2008 19:22

Just tell her that she is a tell tale tit, and that her tongue shall be split and that all the dogs in the town will have a little bit.

That'll sort her.

Or you could just ignore it.

Hulababy · 28/10/2008 19:24

Oh - and those people who think that ther own darling child has never told tales - I recommend most of you would be sorely disappointed to find out that this is very unlikely. I have helped out in school, worked as a teacher, carried out children's birthday parties as a job, plus been around an awful ot of other children in other capacities - all children (with no SN) have IME told tales on some other child at some point. It is entirely normal, and a very definite normal part of the growing up process.

Troutpout · 28/10/2008 19:30

give her a slapping

mynameisluka · 28/10/2008 19:34

Yes YABU !- and so would I be. Tell her to do like the bees do and buzz off. Then pull her plaits and run away.

noonki · 28/10/2008 19:47

When I pick up DS1 from Childminders the other kids all rush over to tell me all of his misdemenours...the bigger the gaggle of children

the bigger the crime.

Kids love to tell tales at that age (if she was older though I would just trip her up on your way out!)

MadamePlatypus · 28/10/2008 19:56

4 year olds have an amazing ability to spot wrongdoing in others. My only hope is that with DS this ability will eventually transfer to spotting wrongdoing in by himself. I haven't met a 4 year old who isn't capable of being the class policeman in the right circumstances. I think it is more to do with becoming aware of all the rules and not being able to control the urge to spread this knowledge, than being malicious.

I think a bright "Oh really?" is all that is called for.

She is not telling tales, she is developing a concept of right and wrong. She is just telling you what she saw.

If she annoys you just ignore her. You are the adult after all.

This is just a stage some children go through and as far as I can recall 4 is a prime age for it. I would stop judging if I were you as your son will probably start doing it too.

Scarletibis · 29/10/2008 15:32

YABU - she is only 4. I would try thinking of something jokey to say in return to her.

SmugColditz · 29/10/2008 15:36

Don't get annoyed, it's perfectly normal behavior. If she was mine, and you tore a strip off her, I'd laugh in your face (then firebomb your car)
