why why why why why???

they go sooooooooooooo slowly, they pull away after dithering about if it is safe or not, and they then just tootle along a silly MPH (ie, 25MPH), and then look at you as tho you are some seriously deranged boy racer when you finally get to over-take them.

arghhhhh

I have driving issues, I know what it is like to be nervous, but they seriously make me very distrustful of other drivers as they normally finally have the finances to have a half decent car, they tend to buy one that is brand new (to see them thro their retirement.....I can understand that, really, I can), but why why why get one that is more powerful than they seem to be able to manage, and also, one that is so big that they seem to stuggle seeing over the steering wheel.

ok, rant over, as you were!!!

I tend to drive at the speed limit if conditions allow, and do hate being harrassed by people breaking the limit trying to get past - however, there is something very bad mannered about having little consideration for the road user behind you - you may have all the time in the world to drive at 25mph on a good 60mph road in good conditions, but not everyone has, and it's kind of rude not to either let them past, or drive at something closer to the speed which could be reasonably expected on the road.

deste · 27/10/2008 20:04

I thought you had to drive at the speed of the road. Friend failed last month as he did 40 on the motorway among other things.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 27/10/2008 20:08

i know several people who failed for doing 25 in a 30 / 40 in a 50 etc.

saralou · 27/10/2008 20:19

me and dh love to rant about this!

where we live they are particularly slow and dithery, it makes you a nervous driver

my favourite rant is when they pull out in front of you so you have to break, then they drive along at 20mph

PsychoAxeMurdererMum · 27/10/2008 20:21

my DH also rants about them.....his rants may have affected me a little

sunday drivers he calls them

I live in the Yorks. Dales and the smaller roads are a friggin' nightmare at the weekend - chokka with proper Sunday drivers admiring the scenery at half the speed limit. Not fun if you've actually got somewhere to go.

edam · 27/10/2008 20:30

My dad's a pensioner but drives a very sporty Saab and races away from the lights. Has just got his licence back after a six month ban. (It was all points from speed cameras - of course, to listen to him they were all racked up while he was doing a mere 80 on the M4 at midnight...)

cocoleBOO · 27/10/2008 20:40

I was on a dual carriageway today, behind a 4x4 which went at 30mph the whole way. AND touched their brakes continually going down the slightest slope. AND didn't k know how to use their indicators. AND weaved across the divide of the lanes.
But of course it didn't annoy me in the slightest.

needmorecoffee · 28/10/2008 08:40

slow drivers don't bother me in the slightest

YANBU....
I wouldn't say I was a boy racer type driver but I do like to drive faster than 20 mph on a straight road and the speed limit is 40....
AND while I'm on the subject, why when they are in their safe haven of 20 mph and there is nothing coming the other and no traffic or obstacles of any shape in front why do the PITA's speed up? WHY?
I can appreciate that the speed limit was put there for a reason but I can't fathom why people would want to go SOOO slowly unless they are incompetent or actually got their driving licence as a free gift in their cereal...
I think incompetent drivers, and by this I mean the ones that drive dangerously slow, cannot negotiate roundabouts (like give way to the right) or junctions and in general have absolutely no idea what they are doing behind the wheel of a car (and they are mainly elderly but not all) should be made to have a course on safe driving practices. They do drive unsafely and consequently are the cause of accidents.
And yes it is one of pet hates.... had you guessed?

Madsometimes · 28/10/2008 09:09

I am not a confident driver and I only drive on local roads I know. I do sometimes think how pathetic I am. However, I do not drive a powerful car. I tend to stick to the speed limit, not go below it unless there is traffic calming. I hate being tail gated when I am doing the legal speed.

The thing that makes me belly laugh is when an aggressive driver behind me overtakes and then get stuck at the next set of lights or in front of the traffic that is inevitably a few metres ahead

Tigerschick · 28/10/2008 09:37

Near us we have a combination of busy city streets, wide, free flowing A roads and narrow, windy country lanes.

On the city streets I drive at or below the speed limit (depending on traffic conditions) and hate it when people speed - including DH!! If someone is dithering then I sometimes get a bit antsy with them but won't overtake or beep them.

On the windy country lanes I drive as quickly as the conditions allow. I know the roads pretty well so know where there are blind corners and hidden dips. If I come up behind someone dithering then I tend to fall back a bit as I know it can be worrying if you don't know the road or are a little nervous.

On the free flowing A road I drive at or below the speed limit (depending on the conditions) I hate it when idiots overtake when I'm already doing 60 in a 60. I hate it more, however, when I come up behind someone doing 40 or less. This is not a narrow or winding road. The other day I was following a huge BMW doing 40 on the straights and slowing down to 30 on every slight bend It's very dangerous; 3 people overtook both the idiot and me ... I won't overtake unless I am certain it is safe so I was stuck behind him for ages.

There is a difference between driving slowly and safely and driving so slowly you are causing an obstruction.

Tigerschick · 28/10/2008 09:39

Sorry - didn't answer the OP really there!

I'd say, it depends on the conditions. But, in clear conditions when the driving is causing an obstruction (which is what i think you are referring to) then YANBU.

I typed out a moohoosive rant about aunty and her new car and it got eaten by the laptop monster.......

aunty has a stunningy gorgeous MG sports car in metallic purple, capable of doing 200mph.

she sticks as 30mph EVERYWHERE SHE DRIVES, and has an over-inflated-sense-of-self-importance when she drives as "I learnt when there were real cars and proper drivers on the roads"........cos now there are clearly pretend drivers and lego cars on the road.......

arghhhhhhhhhhh

SHE is the type of driver that drives me mad. it should be forbidden, a car like that with a little old lady!

Where do you all live? Can't say I have witnessed incredibly slow drivers on more than one or two occasions ever - and I've driven and been driven loads all over the UK. I have been at 40mph on a motorway - I was in a funeral car.

I know when my ILs first got company cars and therefore drove something fast and flashy for the first time, my MIL in particular was a complete nightmare. For years she drove at 90+ on every dual carriageway.

I always stick to the speed limits and often if I'm on an unfamiliar country road in the dark I will go slower than some locals might like - so sorry if any of you have been stuck behind me.
