to want my little boy not to have to sleep on the standard slim jim mattresses in travel cots

aarrgghh i have looked at all the travel cots around and just can't find one with a decent mattress. we are going away for 2wks and can't imagin anything worse for my little one to have to bed down on . ok so i know they are TRAVEL cots but why don't they do an optional decent/thicker mattress that you can use if wished.....

mothercare sell an additional mattress you can put in them.

we always put a big thick fleecy blanket in ours because it's really, really uncomfy. don't know what the modern ones are like thouh

they are rubbish! My dd wasn't fussed at all though and slept perfectly well in it. However, ds is a fussy bugger adn fidgets all night. The solution for him is putting 2 pillows or a folded duvet in the bottom. He's fine when we do this.

FYI you can buy a travel cotmatress

We were a bit PFB and bought a travel cot mattress, but it does mean you have a bulky mattress to transport. You could make do with a blanket. I don't think that our DCs would really have noticed though, they can sleep anywhere.

They make custom mattresses to fit almost anything - if it is a branded cot you give them the details, they have a data base of sizes - if not you can measure the cot yourself.

I ordered one for ds's travel cot and they were fab, lots of different options to chose from, great delivery time etc

Friend of ours suggested wrapping a single duvet round the mattress which seemingly works too.

I had the basic mamas & papas travel cot and they sell an additional safety mattress which was much better. Agree that the mattress they supply is awful.

I fold up a quilt/duvet to make is thicker for them.

Put a towel on top of the mattress. Truly the kid will sleep on the skinny one though, he won't care! They have more padding than adults don't forget!

Our friends had a very swanky french travel cot which I used to covet. It still folded up smallish but had a decent, thick mattress.

I had a padded baby play mat thing which i used to fold in half and put on top of the mattress, all 4 slept in it very well (not all at once obviously )

lol at flum, that may explain why dd was ok and ds isn't dd was a lot chubbier than ds is

I use a thin baby quilt we were given when he was little, it fits the bottom nicely and adds some padding. I think it came from Singapore though, not sure where in the UK you could get one!

He sleeps amazingly in it anyway, and because they're all squidgy and don't weigh as much as we do they don't seem to mind much. Honest.

I put an extra mattress in mine and it was a terrible idea. Woke up in the night (luckily) to find ds had slipped down between the mattress and the net side. He was very little - could easily have suffocated. A fleece blanket would be much safer.

I bought a mattress from Mothercare, but DD sleeps in hers all the time, well, she sleeps with me all the time but in theory...

I got on one of these while in Singapore on a holiday and they are so fab! My DS sleeps soooo well in this and it fits the standard Graco type travel cot and it rolls up into a carry bag. Surely there will be a similar type product in this country???

I got a travel cot mattress for £15 from Toysrus and it fits into the zip compartment on the side of my travel cot bag (not sure what the bits for). But its quite a good one anyway (I think its Urban Detour) but its still too hard for them to sleep on.

Just got a Samsonite Pop Up Travel cot with "deluxe mattress".....its barely even a thin blanket let alone a deluxe mattress! I shall be buying a proper mattress for it. And no this is for my 3rd child not my 1st born. Not all of us are willing to let our child sleep on concrete.

I was v jealous of a friend in US who had a Phil and Teds cot. It had an inflatabe mattress and folded really small. Don't think you can get them here yet though

In response to the people who suggested putting in a single duvet/pillows, that would only be appropriate for dcs over a year old wouldn't it? A suffocation risk for small babies. I don't think the OP said how old her child is.

I'd put the duvet under the mattress, then the mattress, then the sheet/baby/blankets.... the baby ain't gonna reach the mattress but it'll still add some comfort

But the bottom of the mattress is generally hard, so a duvet under it won't make much difference.

Mine never had any problem sleeping in travel cots. But then, I quite like hard beds, so tend to buy hard mattresses for my DCs.
