aarrgghh i have looked at all the travel cots around and just can't find one with a decent mattress. we are going away for 2wks and can't imagin anything worse for my little one to have to bed down on . ok so i know they are TRAVEL cots but why don't they do an optional decent/thicker mattress that you can use if wished.....

Good point about putting a blanket in the bed, under the fitted sheet would be safer.

I regulary let my DC sleep on concrete, it toughens them up so that they will sleep anywhere

We had the Samsonite Bubble cot and it was hard as stone, actually. DS still slept like a log.

We only used the Samsonite on the ferry once a year where we had no space for the big travel cot and mattress. It saved on space in the car too as we needed that for importing beans and hobnobs back to Germany.

I bought a piece of thick foam to fit - cost about a fiver from Dunelm. then put the sheets over that. Works a treat.

Have you got any friends you could borrow from- we bought travel cot for our first hol and tried to do without extra mattress- hellish sleepless nights (and actually pfb or not I wouldn't want to sleep on it either!!), bought the mattress for the next hol (I think they are about £25 from Mothercare) and dd slept like a dream and we all had a nice holiday- seriously its worth the money!!!

But the whole travel cot kit is blooming expensive for a few weeks a year so Ive made a point of lending ours to as many friends as possible who have since had babies!!

DS had to sleep in a travel cot for a month when we first got back from the US (before our furniture arrived).

We put a folded fleecey blanket between the mattress and the top sheet, it adds an extra few inches of comfort (and warmth) and DS sleeps a lot better than he did the first few times we tried a travel cot.

We used to put a lambskin on top of the mattress and under a sheet when DS was small.

We just took DD's cot mattress and shoved that in.
