To think I should be able to have a council house?

Ho hum - must stop my addiction to MN as will not have time from next week so my cunning plan is to piss off as many people as possible so I will be frightened to come on here .

So, my local council are building lots of lovely new council or housing association (don't care what they are) homes in my area with brand spanking new kitchens, bathrooms, lovely new carpets etc, etc and I am thinking why should the so-called vulnerable members of society (who are most probably going to wreck the places) be higher on the housing list than us.

We rent privately (since we sold our house 2 years ago as could not afford the mortgage) and I don't see that we will ever be able to afford another house. We pay well over a grand for a 3 bed (3DCs) and have the insecurity of potentially having to move every 6 months at the owners whim which is the worst thing (have already moved 3 times since started renting).

It really makes me mad that quite a few of DCs friends have council houses where they pay only 350 per month and probably earn similar wages to us (the ones that work that is). What makes them deserve one more than us? I know damn well that we will not get one of the new homes as there are about 5000 people in the queue before us and they will probably go to single parents, immigrants and and generally useless members of society who do not work and have no intention of doing so. We pay our taxes and would appreciate any help we were given (as we need it now) but will get sweet FA. Makes me want to scream!! This thread may be unusual as I am not dissing council house tenants as I desperately want to be one (in a new build anyway).

Hmm. Would love a council place too but have little hope. Single parent, one child, rent nearly £700 a month and council tax virtually another £100 - that's before gas, electric, petrol (so I can work), telephone, food and any clothing DS needs.
Take home about £1500 a month so on a good salary - even so there is very little left to put away.

But I can do it - private renting is crap though as you are at the whim of the landlord who could sell up (okay try to) at any time.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason to how the council/housing association allocate their housing but assume there IS a system. Neighbour who works for housing dept (council) says if homeless it can be luck of the draw.

expatinscotland · 22/10/2008 20:47

you got CAT or email, OMDB? would love to keep in touch in case we win the Lotto .

some friends of ours got a shared ownership place after 2 years on the list.

i'm SO chuffed for them! DH will be helping them move tomorrow and Thursday despite the brutal weather expected as he has only two shifts to cover and they're both in the morning.

the fella's really shy and quiet, being and their two children, but has become good friends with DH and i'm glad for it and their family.

and if the landlord is looking for new tenants for their old cottage next year we'd be happy to live there .

HRHSaintMamazon · 22/10/2008 20:49

Well i am currently in temporary housing. i have been for the past 3 years.
I left my XP and fled to a refuge. I used my entire savings to pay deposits and rent on a house, sort furniture etc.

Xo found us again and we had to flee again.
I was this time skint and had no option but to become homeless.

I have no way of knowing when i will be moved on and i am told i can be given as little as 7 days notice.

The new uild council homes will indeed have new kitchens. they will be basic units and basic worktops. the floors will be covered in lino tiles.
there will not be carpet's fitted at all.

new build council homes are probably 0.8% of all authprity housing stock so most people get kitchens and bathrooms that are decades old.
As for "so-called vulnerable members of society (who are most probably going to wreck the places) "
yes because being teh victim of abuse makes me a destructive yob doesn't it.

sorry, meant to say the chap is French and although he speaks good English, he is still quite quiet until DH struck up conversations with him in the school yard.

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 22/10/2008 21:00

What a knobhead you are. We are about to go on the council waiting list as we barely scrape by with the rent and bills. And our rent isn't nearly £1000. If you can afford to pay that then you're not that much in need.

A council house would benefit us greatly as we'd be able to pay off our debts quicker and get some savings. But we know there are people worse off than us and therefore would prefer they were housed before us anyway. Your mindless stereotyping just proves what an absolute idiot you are. I am glad you have found insulting decent members of MN good entertainment. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Cheesesarnie · 22/10/2008 21:02

I hope you are paying her to type your responses as well ScottishMummy!

frustratedmumof3 · 22/10/2008 21:03

OMG am terrified so will log off in a mo (sticks and stones and all that) as cannot bear to witness any more outrage. Get plenty actually but have no need to brag.

Stand by what I said though. Sad society that seems to think that everyone else owes them a living, while the ones who pay for it get bugger all back.

Just to clarify, am very intelligent (can even read the Daily Mail upside down on a good day) shit, will get even more flack for that. Will def log off now.

FAQ · 22/10/2008 21:06

yeah - you know what - you go and find me a job that will leave me with the same amount of money I get now (or preferabbly more - life on benefits it pretty shite at the best of times) and I'll take it - I don't care what it is - I'll be there.

I'd do bloody anything if it meant I could keep a secure longterm roof over my DS's heads.

ScottishMummy · 22/10/2008 21:06

janos i outsource my responses to an exploitative call centre where staff must be au fait with Scottish colloquialism and type's their tiny child fingers to the bone for a pittance
