To think Jim Davidson is probably not the most enlightening contributor to a programme about political correctness and to want to explain in the most violent terms why the word Paki is not equivalent to the word Brit or Aussie?

FFS.

Clive James, Radio 4. That moron Jim Davidson has me frothing at the mouth.

For anyone who genuinely doesn't understand why the term "paki" is not equivalent to the term "brit" or "aussie", it is because the term Brit or Aussie is merely a shortening of the words British or Australian, and neither word has ever carried any pejorative meaning.

The word Paki, otoh, was always, always used pejoratively. It was used indiscriminately to describe anyone from the Indian sub-continent - or even, anyone from anywhere east of Italy. If you were an Afghan, an Iraqui, an Indian, a Sri Lankan, you could be called a Paki. Hence, Paki is not merely a shortening of the term "Pakistani", it is a pejorative term for anyone with dark skin who is not of African or Caribbean descent.

OK? Got that? If someone could explain that to Jim Davidson while they're on their travels, I'd be grateful.

I thank you.

I've met hima couple of times. He is a miserable fecker in real life, aand also came across as very lonely.
Almost to be p[ittied really. WHat he said sounds incredibly ignorant and arrogant rather than malicious.

Carmenere · 22/10/2008 12:46

So mil was living with an ignorant old fucker who was from the east end of london. He was revoltingly racist. Just because he was old, just because he came from a specific area didn't mean that his opinions had any value other than as an example of being an ignorant hateful old fucker.

childrenofthecornsilk · 22/10/2008 12:50

Why is he allowed to air his ignorance. Look at what happened to Jade Goody? She was rightly ostracised for spouting racist views. Why does he continue to be given the opportunity? Ban him.

PersephoneSnape · 22/10/2008 12:51

I'm 40, london B&B and have to say that 'Paki' was used with a negative connotation during my childhood. I was taught it by less educated older relatives and also had black neighbours who were refered to as what you would normally expect. As my life experince widened i learned to see past the colour of someones skin and treat them as individuals, rather than skin tones.

Of course someones colour is important, when you are labelled as a set of stereotypes due to the colour of your skin, and in some occasions treated less favourably than others - but it certainly, in my experience, isn't an indication of any of the things jim davidson thinks it is. and all Londonners of a certain age do not think like him - he's his own stereotype.

SixSpotBonfire · 22/10/2008 12:51

onager, when I was at school in rural Yorkshire in the late seventies, some very brave people opened a Chinese takeaway in the local market town. I (and everyone else) referred to it as the Chinky. Not, (certainly in my case) to be particularly hateful to the people who ran it. But we certainly were shamefully ignorant and I would never ever use the word now. If you used the word "Paki" in the same way, then sorry but I don't think that's any defence, tbh.

I don't think the people who shouted "Paki!" at my ex mil did so to say "excuse me, can I check whether you're from Pakistan or India? How lovely!" - they shouted it as an insult. She shouted back "I'm INDIAN"

With SSB et al on this. Jim Davidson is VILE.

IorekByrnison · 22/10/2008 13:11

He is such a tit. Did you hear him explaining that he was the "only comic doing a black character" because "I was smart and I could do the voices". He really is stunningly stupid.

Bubbaluv · 22/10/2008 13:11

In Australia it is exactly equivelant to Aussie or Pom, but that is because there has never been any particular racism there against people from Pakistan.
The same cannot be said here and there is no point denying that it is used as an insult.
What an idiot!

PersephoneSnape · 22/10/2008 13:21

In December 2006, Davidson was embarrassed by a boy who heckled him during a performance of his pantomime Dick Whittington in Kent. Reportedly, Davidson came on stage at the Orchard Theatre in Dartford, delivering the scripted line, "Do you know who I am?" The boy, a Scout in full uniform, loudly replied, "Yes, you?re a fucking wanker.".

but shocked and outraged at this boys behaviour!

lol

policywonk · 22/10/2008 17:17

I only heard the last ten minutes of the programme - I do hope the first two-thirds were better, because the last third was deeply crap. It was presented as a fairly neutral history of PC, but in fact it was anything but IMO. Deeply biased - sounded like a Daily Mail podcast

idontbelieveit · 22/10/2008 17:21

JD, he's on my list ....

MorrisZapp · 22/10/2008 17:23

God how I hate the term 'PC', and most of the ppl who use it.

Most of the stories the Daily Hatemail feature about PC are made up anyway. What I don't get are the public's insatiable demand for these stories, and their absolute desperation to believe that they are true.

No doubt the 'banning Christmas' ones will be starting up soon

Carmenere · 22/10/2008 17:25

Yes Mathew Wright referred to 'the winter holiday' in an inferred, 'this is what we will have to call it soon' way and I just thought, what a load of crap Nobody minds christmas being called christmas

policywonk · 22/10/2008 17:25

Aaargh Morris you've just reminded me - Simon feckin Heffer dragged out that old canard (apparently 'large areas of the country' are now prevented from celebrating Christmas by rampant Islamists) and he wasn't even challenged - Clive Anderson just seemed to accept his point without comment.

I am a particularly ancient MN-er and I have never heard paki used as anything other than an insult.

And, unlike 'Brit' or 'Aussie', I have never heard anyone introduce themselves to new friends as 'Hi, I'm Sanjeev, I'm an a paki'. (I have heard it used very tongue-in-cheek / self-piss-taking by young women accusing each other of 'TP' meaning 'typical paki' behaviour - generally referring to being too meek of reticent).

MorrisZapp · 22/10/2008 17:40

The Grauniad did a hilarious expose of the truth behind the banning Christmas stories - the Winterval one is the best.

It happened 8 years ago, it didn't replace Christmas, it was in fact a special attempt to attract people to Birmingham and use the shops/ services etc and they had also bought extra Christmas lights that year (or similar).

Yet still the DM reading public are convinced that in Birmingham, you can lose your job for saying 'Happy Christmas' instead of calling it Winterval.

There was another story about a guy with loads of Christmas lights on his house who was asked to switch them off late at night, at the request of neighbours. This was reported as 'banning Christmas' when in fact his local council also congratulated him for raising money for charity, and asked him to turn on the local town Christmas lights!

We live in mad times indeed.

MorrisZapp · 22/10/2008 17:44

Sorry, my point being: the stories don't have to be true. They don't even have to be half true. They just have to be given oxygen and the public will grasp them and turn them into living legends despite there being no basis in fact at all.

Lots of people firmly believe that Christmas is now banned by PC types. They don't feel they have to say why they think this, they know it as fact the same way I know for fact that I'm typing this with my own fingers.
