to think it's inappropriate for a 4 year old boy to be wearing an earring to school?

Because I do. Maybe I should go off and read the Daily Mail but it just seems inappropriate at that age.

Ok well I'll say it then Chav, chav, CHAV, CHAV, CHAVVY, chavvy chavvy chavs. Ahh that's better.

If I suggested to my 8.6 yo DS he had an earing he would probably laugh at me, then cry at the thought of the pain. What different worlds we live in.

CatIsSleepy · 21/10/2008 12:48

YANBU
i think 4 is too young for this kind of fashion statement
(boy or girl)
don't care if that makes me a snob
and too am surprised it's been allowed at the school

nailpolish · 21/10/2008 12:57

i think its wrong to mutilate children
boy or girl

i think it should be illegal before the age of 16

Ugh!!!

pamelat · 21/10/2008 13:06

Girl or boy. Disgusting.

elsiepiddock · 21/10/2008 13:13

I agree, girl or boy - revolting, naff and cheap-looking.

darkpunk · 21/10/2008 13:17

yanbu..completely tasteless in a child..naff in an adult...and about 30 years out of date.

Elffriend · 21/10/2008 13:19

LOL at Daphne blurting out!

Don't like seeing jewellary on young children of either sex.

Don't like seeing jewellary on boys/men of any age - particularly necklaces.

Loathe sovereign rings - on anyone - with a passion.

So there. So judge me for judging.

LadySanders · 21/10/2008 13:24

i think it looks awful, on boys & girls. my local school has loads of 5 year old boys with huge fake diamond earrings a la beckham, and i will happily admit to being HIGHLY judgey about it. i'm sure there are some lovely families who let their 4 year old boys wear earrings at school, but i haven't met any yet.

saffiw · 21/10/2008 13:29

Give over your self, so its not most peoples cuppa tea, but it is hardly effecting your health ... or is it?

onager · 21/10/2008 13:32

How does an earring lower the tone? and what does lower the tone mean anyway? Lots of women wear earrings so presumably it's not the thing itself that's bad.

onager · 21/10/2008 13:37

I missed the later posts. So is is just prejudice then. It hasn't changed after all since my day when they'd have said the boy was a pouf. They just changed the terms.

I agree that in some cultures it is normal, but I don't consider it normal in ours. It is not done for religous reasons is it just chavvy reasons. LOL elf, I used to go out with a boy years ago who was given a Krugaren (sp) for his 21st birthday by his mum and dad. It was absolutely hideous. He didn't think anything of it. It reminded me of gold medalion man. His dad was just the same. My DP wears a gold chain, which I hate but his mum and dad gave it to him. I am forever, tucking it under his jumper! Why would a child of 5 want to wear a diamond stud - why why why!!!!!!

nappyaddict · 21/10/2008 15:12

I've never known a school say they couldn't have studded earrings. All schools won't allow them for PE but i've never known one ban them full stop.

barnsleybelle · 21/10/2008 15:12

yanbu.... I hate to see them on boys or girls at this age...

As far as I know the boy concerned does not belong to a group where this would be done for cultural reasons e.g. some Asian communities.

Now in case anyone thinks I'm picking on people who could (but not by me of course, as I wouldn't use such a word be deemed chavvy, can I also add, on a similar note to Elffriend, I HATE those pinky rings some posh men wear.
They are awful, awful, awful.

muggglewump · 21/10/2008 16:05

DaphneMoon
What are Chavvy reasons?
AFAIK I am not, and have never been a Chav, yet I had DD's ears pierced when she was a baby, when we were in a country that treats it as normal in young girls.
I thought it pretty then and I still do now so long as the earrings are appropriate. ie studs or occasionally flat earrings.

MarmadukeScarletbloodstains · 21/10/2008 16:24

Diamond, Daphne? Cubic zirconium surely.

AbbeyA · 21/10/2008 16:26

YANBU I hate them for girls that age too.

stroppyknickers · 21/10/2008 20:41

Am more concerned about your spelling lessons at school - jewellery and medallion, Daphne and Elfriend - than what your dcs have in their ears...

platypussy · 21/10/2008 20:52

Even if its 'cultural' I still think its wrong to pierce any child before it is old enough to decide for itself.

Heated · 21/10/2008 21:09

I freely admit to not liking earrings on children; necklaces on men that are akin to dog-chains; sexualised slogan t shirts; young girls in high heels or provocatively styled Lolita thong underwear for girls.

Happy to be a snob
