...were bottom of the public vote, even though it was obvious to anyone with eyes in their head that they weren't the worst two dancers?

Mumsnet strikes again. Ie. The 'Is Strictly racist' debate has hit all the newspapers nd news channels etc.

AnyoneButAndre · 11/10/2016 17:01

No it's not our fault for once, it hit Digital Spy and the Daily Mirror way before this thread was revived.

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 11/10/2016 18:14

Yep, It began on Digital Spy in record time.
It will make little difference pointing out the stats.
Strictly actually, is one of the better reality shows, whereby contestants making the finals or semis tends to be based on other factors* and therefore pretty colour blind.
DWTS (Len and Bruno on judging panel) even more so.

  • Elimination factors include: Where they are on the board (mid board is dangerous as you are deemed to be "safe") Loyalty to the pro (Anton, Brendan for longevity. Pasha, Aljaz sex appeal) Editing of vts/how the sleb is coming across in person (Voters prefer humble/ or awful but making an effort) Bounce effect from having previously been bottom two Song used in the routine/theme and props

In actual fact, Naga or Ed should have gone by now. But Naga has a Breakfast tv boost and more importantly, a Pasha fandom. Ed has an uninhibited cringe but entertaining factor, going all out.

fwiw, I thought Tameka had three more weeks at least and any other year would have made it to Blackpool.
Melvin had a bloody awful cha cha and a poorly themed tango with non tango music.
Also his voters (Kiss fm audience) probably not in on a Saturday night.
Tameka was mid table. People saw to it that votes got thrown at
Ed (for being prepared to go all out as the Mask)
Lesley (Anton fanbase and the fact she is 70)
Naga (Pasha fandom and some cough Pan cough voted for the catsuit)
Anastacia (Brendan fanbase and in sympathy with the DO backlash)
Everyone thought these four were in danger hence Laura and Tameka got thrown under the bus by virtue of mid table relegation rather than skin colour.

This could have been avoided with a triple DO double elimination this week whereby Melvin, Anastacia and one of Laura/Tameka danced. Would have been surprised to see Tam go then. Brace yourselves if Naga does go next week. Despite her being asian rather than black (and Anita making the quarter finals last year) it will add to the furore sadly.

Danny and Oti will be in the finals. They might not win but this is due to him being the ringiest ringah that ever rung rather than because Oti is black: she is a beloved pro now despite only being in her second year.
Ore and Jo might go sooner but only because of the Clifton backlash/choreo and the fact that he has come over not as 'umble as some of the others (less of a problem in the States although Nyle got it in the neck one week for arrogance).

Other reality shows might have a racial bias but Strictly, no, although I am still sulking over Patrick not making the finals in series 11 (I liked his paso but others less so, he was last man standing in Year of the Woman and beat Ashley despite the latter doing Baby Warz and getting his chest out BUT Anya was not as beloved as the male pros and he lost out to Natalie G in the semis DO).
I agree, and many do, that Ricky Whittle (including Ricky Grin) should have beaten Chris Hollins BUT
Nat's showdance, despite amazing lifts, was not as audience friendly ("crowdpleaser") musically or stylistically as Ola's (LCD mashed potato to a dirty dancing song). We do like an underdog and a song you can link Swayze to.
Natalie, although she is now deemed Goddess and adored, was only in her first season and came across as Miss Competitive. Now it would be different: she would have huge support with a ringah (Greg's on a J word).
Chris and Ola repeated their very well received charleston.
The assault charge (against a pap with a car) was used imho as a smear against Ricky (certainly it led to his lowest scoring dance due to lack of rehearsal).

Where were you all last year when Ainsley vs Jamelia were in the DO? (Sadly that wasn't racist either, Ainsley was flat footed and Jimjams was still being haunted by fattist comments and rehoming her dog. If the British like anything, it's their four-legged friends)

Anyway all of you outraged Strictly devotees please can you head over to Site Stuff and ask HQ for a glitterball?! Wink
Cheers xx👠👠 🎶

ExitPursuedBySpartacus · 12/10/2016 07:48

I am in awe Shock

StrictlyPan · 12/10/2016 08:00

I thought the SCD spreadsheet was just a glittery myth..

228agreenend · 12/10/2016 20:44

And now Strictly is homophobic as one of the gays has been forced to leave....

Okay, I know that that is not strictly true, but I felt like writing a Daily Fail headline. Hope Will is okay as he was one of my favourites.

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 13/10/2016 18:29

Waves to fellow Strictly viewers.
exit in awe of my failure to get a life?! Wink Grin
pan I borrowed Monkseal's I wish he is my hero, you can play Spot the Monksealisms above
228 The tabloids* are gunning for Will, poor sod. I loved him and thought he'd make final six if not further.
Am off to make a Brew for it takes two. Whilst I am an OCD SCD thooperfan, I can also name all the pups in Paw Patrol. Sadly these talents are not getting me very far. Pan Ola appears to have morphed into your girl Aliona on the cover of her new book Shock
*Karen has called them out in her latest tweet.Hashtagged the two Fail journos as liars.
That said, Jeremy has retweeted Piers Moron comment about Will not being private person if he's done X factor/Strictly. Plus he has retweeted that Will getting 5k rather than 20k. I know where his loyalties lie but wonder why he has retweeted.

Andrewofgg · 13/10/2016 19:39

Even if there is a racist element to the public voting, so what? Is anyone going to say the BBC should "correct" the figures?

Threetoedsloth · 13/10/2016 20:21

All hail Kimmy- impressive analysis.

StrictlyPan · 13/10/2016 21:52

Yes I can see why anyone would wish to morph into Aliona. I mentioned it to her this evening. She just giggled in a dismissive way whilst stirring the family gruel.
She is so classy.

WallisofWindsor · 13/10/2016 22:19

So the United Kingdom is racist? Shock

TheHiphopopotamus · 13/10/2016 23:07

Kimmy I am in awe at that post. I only dip in and out of Strictly on occasion but I absolutely and sincerely admire your dedication and commitment Shock

UnGoogleable · 13/10/2016 23:22

Nice summary there Kimmy

What does Greg's on a J word mean though?

For my two penneth's worth - Like Balls (Ed?) has it got anything to do with race. Melvin was crap and deserved to go first.

Tameka was in the bottom two with Laura - a white woman. So surely we could equally say the British public are voting against white folks?

If you want to try to spin it that the judges are somehow racist - that's also (Ed) Bollocks. Tameka went because the judges had to pick and they knew Laura had a tiny bit more potential. End of.

StrictlyPan · 14/10/2016 06:11

I think you're right there Kimmy re the Ola/Aliona thing. That pic is does look more the latter than former. Weird.

Beebeeeight · 14/10/2016 08:03

I'm aghast at the denial of racism in the uk on this thread!

Plenty of research has shown an unconscious bias (if not blatant) against anyone not deemed 'white-british'.

This also applies to non white British people.

MargeryFenworthy · 14/10/2016 08:10

Yes. As a black woman it saddens me.

myfavouritecolourispurple · 14/10/2016 08:21

I don't know if I am guilty of this but certainly I found Tameka annoying. Maybe that's because she's an "urban black" woman and I can't relate to her personality? But then it seems pretty racist to say all urban black people have a personality that I find annoying. And I would find it difficult to relate to a Sunderland Brexiteer too. So I think my relief that she has gone is everything to do with her personality and nothing to do with her race/colour.

For the record, I find Tess annoying too. Maybe I'm just intolerant and find lots of people annoying regardless of skin colour!

I think the judges had a thankless task on Sunday (Saturday) night - they really were between a rock and a hard place.

TheHiphopopotamus · 14/10/2016 09:29

I agree Tameka was annoying, and I don't like her character on Eastenders. Are we not allowed to find black people annoying? Her sister Denise on EE is one of my favourite ever soap characters though so what's the conclusion I can draw from that?

For the record, Tess also gets on my tits. But then so does Winkleman. Cut your sodding fringe woman!

WallisofWindsor · 16/10/2016 19:59

Another ethnic person voted off. Very sad.

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 16/10/2016 20:35

^ Not really.
Bottom 4
Ed Naga Ana Judge
Ed = entertainment as trying even though poor
Judge = entertainment as gurning and sarcastic
They were knew to be unsafe so their fans voted multiple times
Hence Ana and Naga bottom two, despite Brendan and Pasha definitely having fanbases
Why?
Ana didn't help herself by saying No when asked if she was happy with the scores (I like her)
Rumba was a bit meh
Naga's enthusiasm for the show/chemistry with Pash does not come across on screen
Fuck all to do with racial bias, Anita Rani made semis last year
When Ore and Oti's partner end up in the DO then I might think you're onto something....

DiegeticMuch · 16/10/2016 21:21

I understand the racial bias argument, but Naga was a poor dancer, she had little chemistry with Pasha, and she lacked charisma. That's why she was in the dance-off I think.

funnyperson · 16/10/2016 22:14

I thought maybe costumes had it in for Naga with those dreadful wigs. I also thought Pasha's choreography was rubbish.

ExitPursuedBySpartacus · 16/10/2016 23:28

Naga not a natural dancer at all. She was improving but not enough.

Liiinoo · 16/10/2016 23:48

I LOVE Naga. And Pasha. They were my favourites from the start. My favourite celebrity (so cool, so beautiful, so classy, so local to me) paired with Pasha and his little Pasha face. I had a nightmare last night that he would leave and this evening it came true. But I can't fault the voting public. She was stiff and detached and awkward. I think her natural competitiveness scuppered her performance every week. So I think this was one situation where the choice was fair not racist. But that doesn't disprove the rule.
