To not want to get ds' hair cut?

theSuburbanDryad · 17/10/2008 20:03

Ds will be 2 in Jan, and has quite a lot very fine, flyaway hair. Dh is insisting that we get it cut as it's in his eyes - but it isn't, so long as we brush it to the side.

I really don't want to get his hair cut, it's so lovely as it is and i think he would find going to a barber's quite traumatic.

Nooooo! He hasn't got enough hair to cut it yet!

Everyone keeps telling me to cut Tink's hair, but when I went to the hairdresser (not for her) they said it needs to grow out and be trained properly before it's cut. She has no natural parting (like her dad and brothers) so it all comes forward. We'd have to cut it from the back to stop it going in her eyes. Once it's all behind her ears and getting to a good length we might think about getting it cut.

SheikYerbouti · 17/10/2008 20:49

Must admit, I snip bit off the hair at the front on DS2, because he keeps getting porridge in it

By the way, thank you for the compliment, SD

TinkerBellesMum · 17/10/2008 20:51

As for nails, I used to bite them whilst she was asleep. Eventually she thought it was great to have her nails done because Mummy does - another tip, get everyone else to do theirs in front of him so it's just one of those things. She likes to cut her own and mine, so I give her clippers with the lever down so she can't really do it.

meglet · 17/10/2008 20:57

His hair is like my DS's. I still haven't cut his and he's almost 2. I'd leave it 'til next summer, the hair will keep his little head & ears warm over the winter.

MrsJamin · 17/10/2008 21:01

sorry but you're being PFB, he's not a baby any more and I don't like long hair on boys. I'm sure you'll look back at photos of him and think he looked a bit silly.

MisterUrbanDryad · 17/10/2008 21:04

I'm NOT insisting on it!

I just think it might be good to get it out of his eyes!

frazzledali · 17/10/2008 21:04

oh gosh he's so cute...I don't really like long hair on boys to be totally honest, but his doesn't look all that long anyway. If it was really getting in his eyes maybe you could just trim a wee bit off at the front.

TinkerBellesMum · 17/10/2008 21:04

MrsJ, just because you don't like long hair on boys doesn't mean that everyone doesn't, I love it on little boys! I'm trying to convince my partner to grow his, he had it long till he lived in Europe when it was too hot, he keeps shaving it now

The kid hardly has any hair anyway, if she leaves it till next summer it will be a good length to do something with.

DevilsAdvocaat · 17/10/2008 21:06

CUT CUT CUT!

TinkerBellesMum · 17/10/2008 21:06

MUD, it won't last long, just keep tucking it behind his ears.

pinkandbluespottywellies · 17/10/2008 21:10

SD you mention that it's flyaway - you might find it thickens up a bit and is more manageable if you start getting it trimmed. I think it looks gorgeous though, nice length and cute style. Certainly isn't long.

WezMeBroomstick · 17/10/2008 21:15

Cut it

DevilsAdvocaat · 17/10/2008 21:16

it will thicken with a lil snip snip.

RubySlippers · 17/10/2008 21:18

noooooooooooooo

don't cut it

i LOVE long hair on boys - and your boy is a BEAUTY

my DS has shoulder length hair so am biased

FreakyLadyFrightALot · 17/10/2008 21:23

HM...NO PROOF REALLY TO OUR THEORY,BUT DH AND i BOTH BELIEF THAT US SHAVING DS'S HEADS'S that it helped the growth and made it thicker....
because all our sons have better hair than us...

QueenofAllWildThings · 17/10/2008 21:26

That isn't too long, looking at the photo. A woman at my DS's preschool has a younger boy (around 2 I suppose) and his hair is much longer than your DS's - it literally looks like girls' hair with a fringe and everything. About 2 or 3 inches below his shoulders - now that's too long, IMHO.

IAteDavinaForDinner · 17/10/2008 21:34

Please cut it. I am having this debate with DP at the moment and he's refusing to cut DS's even though 3 people in the last week have called him she. If you cut it then I will be able to show him and say "look, this is the Mumsnet verdict, do it!".

deste · 17/10/2008 21:35

His hair is not long. There is nothing wrong with the length it is. Does your husband want him to look like a skinhead. Us mums are desparate for their hair to grow only to cut it short. His fringe is so fine that he only has a few strands to cut. Comb it forward and hold it between your first two fingers and cut off about 1 centimetre. If it is still in his eyes do it again and take another centimetre off, only take off small amounts till you have the correct length. Thats all he needs it will take ten seconds. Do it quickly before he notices and dont let him see the scissors.

Twiglett · 18/10/2008 10:35

Look .. the kid has flyaway strands of hair that can get in his eyes.

Do you remember how painful getting something in your eyes is .. like an eyelash or hair or bit of dust.

The point is you are risking him having a 10 minute session of pain because you are being PFB about snipping it back a little

tucking it behind his ears is unfair .. it will come out again.

I don't care about long or short hair .. but I do think it's just downright mean not to be practical about a child's hair because of your sensitivities

nappyaddict · 26/11/2008 10:46

It doesn't look like it's in his eyes yet. I waited until DS' hair was eyelash length when his eyes were open iyswim. Then I just got the fringe trimmed to his eyebrows. I think there's some pics on my profile just before he had it cut.

nappyaddict · 26/11/2008 10:49

Giddykipper and RubySlippers - recent photos please I love seeing cute photos of boys with long hair

pooka · 26/11/2008 10:50

Cut it.

Am with Twig here. It is in his eyes.

I used to trim ds's fringe, then at about 3yrs he had his first hair cut at a hairdressers. Was expecting him to hate it but he loved it.

His hair looks much thicker and in better condition, less ratty than before.

pooka · 26/11/2008 10:51

He is very cute.

Umlellala · 26/11/2008 11:01

I didn't cut my little girl's for AGES cos... oh, I don't know. Looked soooo much better when I did, and much easier to manage. She has a cute little bob now. (I do it for her, she sits on chair in front of DVD, I hack away cut hair into beautiful short bob.). She does have clips and I plait the front section to try to minimise porridge/paint/glue stickiness.

Just do it.

(PS he is very cute and will still be v cute)

BouncingTurtle · 26/11/2008 12:23

Ds's hair is also hanging in his eyes, again I brush it out of his eyes using a wetted brush.
Really don't want to cut it because he is just a baby!
