I can totally understand why you would abbreviate YANBU, or IYSWIM etc, but it takes no time to type, son, daughter, husband, partner, they're one word!

It makes my teeth grind a bit everytime I red DD1 and DS2, beccause I would never say,
"Why, let me tell you about my dear daughter, or my dear partner", it makes me CRINGE!

Does anyone else feel a twat writing these?

No idea what I would do with another child... I couldn't add a number on the end. Flameboy was Spark during pregnancy, but it would be wrong to give his name away.

I would have to have an MN naming thread

Lotster · 17/10/2008 16:38

I think I'll go for Lotserspawn.

YABU. Standard internet stuff. Haven't read all the posts, but what gets me is if I'm in a real life conversation and have to stop myself from referring to my DH instead of just my husband.

FimboGotAxed · 17/10/2008 16:40

Just wait until you use "dh" by mistake in rl.

motherinferior · 17/10/2008 16:40

If it bothers you, don't use it. I quite often write about my daughters or my partner. Haven't been chucked off MN yet.

pointygravedogger · 17/10/2008 16:40

Just how standard is this 'standrard internet parlance' of whivh you speak?

finknottle · 17/10/2008 16:40

I like the "Flamechick" "Flameboy" "Babydragon" and "Inferiorettes" et al - think they're funny and clever.
Wish there were equivalent for small finknottles.
If you don't like the 'dear' then don't use it.

Mandelbrot · 17/10/2008 16:42

Lotster

angrypixie · 17/10/2008 16:43

I loathe it when I think about it but have got used to it now, although in my head it's a 'darling' not a 'dear'

motherinferior · 17/10/2008 16:43

And I adore, madly, PFB.

finknottle · 17/10/2008 16:44

As motherinferior says, use what you like. I do, no pitch forks yet.

Guadalupe · 17/10/2008 16:46

I felt very conscious of it at first, couldn't help saying dear partner in my head but that soon stopped. I don't even see the d now, unless I am cross with dh when I type and I might say dickhead to myself and press the key a little harder than usual.

retiredgoth · 17/10/2008 16:49

....I find it a trifle odd, too. I tend to refer to my progeny as the urchins (geeky, feral and monozygotic by turn)

But then I am a contrary soul by nature. I have never seen the need to call a 'spade' a 'spade' (or even a bloody shovel) when I could say 'hand-held excavation device' instead.

Sad fucker? Me??

Poledra · 17/10/2008 16:51

I wish I could have a funny name for my 3 daughters, but since I chose a rubbish nickname, I'm stuck with DD1, 2 and 3. I definitely wouldn't want to use their real names as they deserve their privacy.

MorrisZapp · 17/10/2008 16:53

MorrisMinor?

motherinferior · 17/10/2008 16:53

They could be your cubs, Poledra?

Poledra · 17/10/2008 16:54

Of course, motherinferior - I like that Not sure how many people would get it though...

motherinferior · 17/10/2008 16:55

Actually long before I started on MN (waaaaaaay back) I used to refer to my then only child as the Infanta and her dad as the Sprogfather.

yama · 17/10/2008 16:57

RetiredGoth - pmsl.

estuaryfairy · 17/10/2008 16:59

I like DD for darling daughter, better than baby fairy or small estuary. Don't have a DH or DP, but do have an XP (which is much quicker than typing annoying, useless twunt - maybe MNHQ could add that to the acronym list, I'm sure it would get plenty of airings on lone parents).

Lotster · 17/10/2008 17:03

Would just like to be clear, just in case, did not mean in OP to make anyone who already uses these terms feel small, as have had many a chat with those that do and understand most people use it to be understood as it is so common and not because they adore the terms...

Just makes me cringe.

I thank you.

the d regularly stands for dickhead as far as dp is concerned, there is rarely anything 'dear' about him!
