to not see the point in making your own playdough?

I'm surrounded by mothers who make their own playdough.

Surely homemade playdough is sticky, leaves your hands covered in a dusty gooey mess, and is v v difficult to roll out?

So what is the point?

I have to make my own so it is gluten free

the kids also get the fun of making it themselves

No, it can work. If you get the quantities right, you have enough playdough to sink a ship for around 30p. (And that's my motivation, not feeling worthy.)

If yours is too sticky you probably need to add more flour, I guess?

onepieceoflollipop · 15/10/2008 20:32

I was going to say what loobey said. If you have a child who has to have a gluten free diet, then it is v important. BAM - yes, lots of children try to eat it. It was the same with "messy play" at nursery for us - all those porridge oats. (my dh is a coeliac and we suspected our dd1 was but now we know she isn't, but for a while she had to be gf)

Flibbertyjibbet · 15/10/2008 20:33

gluten free playdo.

KatyMac · 15/10/2008 20:34

Erm it's cheaper

& it i exactly the same texture/easy to use as the bought stuff (well mine is)

Flibbertyjibbet · 15/10/2008 20:36

Does shop bought playdoh actually contain gluten? I thought it was just plastic stuff.

No playdoh of any kind in this house. If the ds's get given any as presents I throw out the dough and keep the things it comes with to use as cookie cutters. We prefer making something we can actually eat if we are getting flour and kitchen stuff out.

notsoteenagemum · 15/10/2008 20:37

YABU proper playdough is really expensive compared to homemade what more reason do you need.

Homemade stuff doesn't smell as bad as proper playdough

Oh, but I love the smell of shop play doh. I only had a kid so I could enjoy that again, lol!
I can't be arsed to make my own play doh either.

policywonk · 15/10/2008 20:39

Jeez, you make one tiny error...

emkana · 15/10/2008 20:40

I have never bought playdough, get given it as present frequently.

onepieceoflollipop · 15/10/2008 20:40

Flibberty I am not sure if "proper" playdough is gf, but certainly the stuff that most people make (including some nurseries/playgroups etc) is full of normal wheatflour.

I wouldn't let my dh near "real" playdough

nooOOOoonki · 15/10/2008 20:40

me too I am a secret playdough sniffer

wahwah · 15/10/2008 20:41

Now if you hadn't posted your complaint and enticed me to google play dough recipes, then I wouldn't have even considered that it might be possible and I could use it to have a small stake in the competitive parenting games.

NotBigNotClever · 15/10/2008 20:42

It is really quick, easy and cheap to make - and lasts for years if you keep it in a cool place. I would never buy any. It took about 5 mins tops to make. It would take me a lot longer to get the car out and go down the shops, frankly.

...and then post it on mumsnet...

CantSleepWontSleep · 15/10/2008 20:44

My homemade stuff has lasted 18months already, entertained dd to make, and cost peanuts. All the bought stuff that we've been given has gone hard within a couple of weeks.

Ergo YABU.

NotBigNotClever · 15/10/2008 20:47

I have known people to make trips into town for even more fatuous and piffling things than playdoh... (OK, I can only think of chocolate at the mo' which is neither fatuous or piffling and in fact a life saver, but still)

lilymolly · 15/10/2008 20:48

come on ladies someone post a recipe please?

Our local playgroup makes their own and its fab- they add vanilla essence to make it smell nice too
