to not see the point in making your own playdough?

I'm surrounded by mothers who make their own playdough.

Surely homemade playdough is sticky, leaves your hands covered in a dusty gooey mess, and is v v difficult to roll out?

So what is the point?

Play dough and plasticine are different.

Love plasticine, hate play dough, it dries out and drops bits all over the place.

Homemade playdough is far superior to shop bought IME.

  1. you can have vast quantities of it
  2. if it dries a little just kneading it sorts it out
  3. technically it's edible (ignoring the horrendous salt content)
  4. It washes off

  1. It last almost forever in a freezer bag
  2. If you like, you can make only one colour thus removing any angst about the colours getting mixed

Well, thanks a bunch mumsnet

I was so inspired by this thread that I decided to make playdoh today. When my back was turned ds grabbed the red food colouring and swigged some then smeared bright scarlet drool all over his face. Now I have an 18 month old who looks like dracula's demon offspring.

Grrrr.

Admittedly that was in fact all my fault. And the kids did really enjoy eating it and choking playing with it.

It's a shame good job food colouring is a real bastard easy to get off skin.

Harumph.

I've put him in bed for his nap and am hoping it rubs off his face onto the sheet. Failimg that he'll be having The World's Longest Bath later.....!

I was going to buy a set with everyhing in it for DS then make my own playdoh with him maybe not wise for a 2YO?

I worked with kids and used to make it all the time, it takes minimal time to mae and more importantly minimal cost, if you make it properly you shouldnt have a sticky mess but it is easy to happen!

Ha - we knocked the red off the shelf in the larder which also happens to be the cupboard under the stairs with electric meter. Every time they read it they look alarmed as the walls are so splattered it looks like a murder scene.

I can completely see why people wouldn't bother making their own. Its cheap, smells nice, easy etc. Mostly I buy it. I can also see why people make it, you get loads, can have fun with colour, smells, it's very cheap etc. Occasionly, if we are bored, have no playdough and have time I will make it. I tend to sigh and think why am I doing this again but ds2 loves having a mountain of it.
