to not want my baby in outfits?

He is 10 weeks old. I have today for the first time, put him in jeans and top with a tank-top over the top.

The thing is, I cant friggin hold him now, as the clothes are riding up.

I really like babies in vest and babygros. They look comfy, no band on belly area, and you can hold them, without them feeling like they are falling apart!

After he has been weighed today, he straight back in his babygro when we get home!

ps, I have only dressed him so it looks like I have made the effort

who are you trying to impress?

dress your baby in clothes that suit your way of life not your peers' concepts of "effort"

LadyOfWaffleIsScaryEnough · 13/10/2008 11:11

Dungarees dungarees dungarees, all DS wears outfit wise.

Divvy · 13/10/2008 11:12

Both mine only wore gro's (or just bodies/tees/nappies, depending on the weather, until they were 6 months or so.

I don't understand the need to dress babies as mini adults.

Plus I think they look uncomfortable, and it is impractical.

Or course YANBU dress him how you want.

VinegARGHHHTits · 13/10/2008 11:12

YANBU, much prefer babygros at this stage, those little outfits are a pita, you can get some really funky babygros, its all i used to dress ds in when he was tiny

onepieceoflollipop · 13/10/2008 11:13

I have a dd and you are right, those bulky waist bands are uncomfortable and impracticable (even more so with washable nappies)

As a compromise sometimes I would get soft velour leggings (about £4) from Mothercare with a long sleeved tshirt over a popper vest. She was more comfy but looked "dressed" iykwim. Also it avoided the need for socks on colder days.

Having said that he is your baby and there is nothing wrong in babygrows (for the first few months anyway)

snowleopard · 13/10/2008 11:15

Babygros are fine, I'm sure no HV or whatever would look askance that your DS wasn't dressed up to be weighed! When you do want to change to outfits, you can get those tops with poppers that do up under the bum, then they don't ride up, and soft jersey trousers or dungarees. I am always amazed that they even make t-shirt-style tops for babies - they always end up round their necks.

bozza · 13/10/2008 11:15

Agree re dungarees. With long sleeved bodysuit underneath not just a top as that will end up scrunched up in his armpits. Pumpkin Patch usually have some nice ones - it is my standard baby clothes gift for boys or girls.

Flightofthenortybats · 13/10/2008 11:15

YANBU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate outfits for small babies with a passion. Ds2 is in babygros and vests a lot, just use a tank top or cardi on top if it's cold. He's 16mo

flourybaps · 13/10/2008 11:16

Yanbu at all imo.

I still love my dd in babygrows, she looks very cute, she is 4 months. However, I do have to put up with my mum saying oh xxxxx has mummy left you in your pyjamas today...... grrr.....

VictorianSqualorSquelchNSquirm · 13/10/2008 11:16

YANBU, DS2 is 27weeks and only just wearing 'outfits' even then they are pretty much pyjama style or dungarees. (Except today, he has on a cute pair of cords nanny bought him)

Yesterday he ahd a t shirt and comfy jersey joggers on and his t shirt still went up to his armpits...everyone stared at him as he was asleep in the buggy, belly exposed - it looked a bit uncomfy!

sockmonkey · 13/10/2008 11:19

I loved DSs in babygrows... it maked them look like, well babies. Putting them in clothes made them look like little boys. I never really thought of the comfort thing, just how cute they looked

Simplysally · 13/10/2008 11:20

My dd wore 'outfits' from about 3-4 weeks, poppered vests/dresses and I never felt as though she was like an unmade bed . She was a summer baby though so the bare legs of the dresses made it easier and nicer to keep her cool. He's your baby so dress him in what you find easiest/prefer.

LuLuBai · 13/10/2008 11:22

My DD wore babygros pretty much the whole time for her first few months. Other babies were in 'outfits' looking like little toddlers but I figured the amount of time she could be in babygros was limited so kept her in them as long as I could (about 5 or 6 months I think before I started to put her in outfits). She needed sturdier clothes ( trousers / dungarees ) from 8 months when she started crawling and wearing through the knees on everything.

WheresTheAuPair · 13/10/2008 11:24

I totally agree with you- it used to drive me mad when people 'kindly' bought my DS outfits- I could never bear to put him in starchy baby jeans or shirts!!

I've been digging out his baby clothes for the imminent arrival of DS2 and found all these lovely baby clothes still with their tags on ebay?!

babygrows look far more cosy imo and also gets round the infernal problem of keeping socks on babies!!

Kathyis6incheshigh · 13/10/2008 11:28

My dcs had a lovely fleecey all-in-one and last winter when ds was one-ish I used to take him out in that with babygros underneath it. No-one could see, he was more comfortable, and he was too young to be bothered

It meant we ended up a few times in coffeeshops with him in a babygro, but I never saw any threads on MN about what a neglectful mother I was

In fact I always felt it made him look like a Dr Seuss character.

ilovemyghds · 13/10/2008 11:29

YANBU. My baby is 3 months old and has only worn an outfit about twice. Someone actually commented the other day 'oh, your baby is always in a babygro'. That's because she is still a tiny baby! It is my DC3 though and with DC1 I did put him in outfits a bit more - only because everyone else was though, and because I thought I ought to! With DC2&3 I have not bothered as much.

I think they look so cute in just a plain babygro, and v comfy.

crokky · 13/10/2008 11:31

My DD is in a babygro, just like everyday. She's nearly 7 months old. Babygros and vests are lovely things for a baby to wear IMO. My DS wore them for ages as well. Now he wears trousers and a top (he's 2.7). I had loads of comments about not bothering to dress DS when he was a baby - these are just made by ignorant people. Dress your baby in things you like that are comfortable.

BexieID · 13/10/2008 11:32

Tom only had one outfit in 0-3 months and he looked odd in it, lol. That was jeans and a top. I think he lived in sleepsuits, vests and just a nappy until he was 3 months (summer 06 was hot). Thats why i'm having trouble buying baby gifts, lol. Sleepsuits are boring but practical, but outfits can be hit and miss depending on size of the baby and to season.

ladyconstancekeeble · 13/10/2008 11:35

When my pfb was only a few days old, mw came for home visit and said to him 'I didn't expect you to be still in your pj's' in a nasty sarky way, then looked at me like I was the worst mother ever. I always dressed him in outfits if we were going out after that. When dd was born I realised that she was a loon and dd stayed in babygros for 6 months.

Mine were both dressed in babygrows, vests and grandma knitted cardies (w. matching hats for outdoors) until 3 mo. I wanted them to look like cute little babies for as long as possible (and believe me it isn't long at all).

MrsMattie · 13/10/2008 11:46

Outfits are a faff for babies this age. All they do is sleep, puke, eat, dribble, puke, poo, wee, poo...

Babygrows are the way to go....for as long as possible.
