Isn't it? 'little man' , 'my little man'... ranks among 'tot' and 'yob' for me. Not as bad as 'my sexy little man' but still...

wotulookinat · 09/10/2008 11:57

I give the phone to my son (nearly 2) to 'talk' to my mum to annoy her.

Ds (2.3) gets on the phone to say hello to his daddy as he only sees him one a week, nowt wrong with that

Mumi · 09/10/2008 12:01

YABU about "little man".
YANBU about "sexy little man"

OneLieIn · 09/10/2008 12:01

are you talking about kids or penises?

Upwind · 09/10/2008 12:02

My friend always gets her 3yo DD to answer the phone. It is a call filtering technique, only people who really want to talk to her are prepared to spend 20 min reasoning with a toddler and hearing about what she has been doing.

Cold callers never manage to reach her.

TheInvisibleManDidIt · 09/10/2008 12:02

We call our youngest 'wee man' or the 'wee one'

Only recently stopped saying 'wee man' to our oldest after he very dramatically yelled 'I am not a WEE MAN!!' and shut himself in his room for 1/2 hr

SuperPsychoFabioSaver · 09/10/2008 12:02

hatrick, it is sooo thrilling isn;t it!

I admit I bought several t'shirts with 'BOY' printed on them just to put him in, I was that thrilled.

it never took away my thrill about my girls, but DH and I were so made up to have a boy too......I think we went a tad over-board.

in fact, it took DH until DS1 was 18mths to finally 'get' that he had a son. He came home one day all 'floaty' (for want of a better word), and I asked him why. "I have a boy", he said.......

"well yeah, we have kind of had him a while now"

PMSL!

wotulookinat · 09/10/2008 12:03

lol at SuperPsycho!

PuppyMonkey · 09/10/2008 12:05

Now I'm jealous. I want my DP to come home "floaty" sometimes.

Oh I loathe it and said if I had a boy I would never use that expression....and yet....I do

'my sexy little man' is absoutely vomit inducing and utterly inappropriate.

tortoiseshellWasMusicaYearsAgo · 09/10/2008 12:09

I hate 'little man'.

But I do use 'the boy' all the time. 'Is the boy asleep?' 'Can you fetch the boy please?'

SuperPsychoFabioSaver · 09/10/2008 12:11

hatrick........sooooooooooooo cute

yep, I had similar, and I did similar, which might be why it took DH so long to 'get' his son

I wish DH still came home floaty occasionally now believe me....he normally sneaks in to try and avoid the crush of the boys leaping on him beggin for a game of footy!

fabsmum · 09/10/2008 12:11

Yes - I can see why you'd hate this phrase.

When I see it written down I hate it. But I still use it all the time.

My 3 year old answers the phone all the time. I have to fight him to get it back. It's great for cold callers.

I call him my little man.

MrsMattie · 09/10/2008 12:16

People who call kids sexy are complete cringebag wrong uns!

'Little man' is ok, a bit cringey. DH uses it sometimes.I never have. But I do use all sorts of silly, baby-ish words 'my boy-boy', 'my bubba-boo', 'my little munchkin chps; etc - DS will be 4 soon

Overmydeadbody · 09/10/2008 12:23

melancholy I call DS "boy" quite a lot, it started after he objected to me calling him "baby" as a term of affection. I also refer to him as "the boy"

fizzpops · 09/10/2008 12:24

Little man is ok in my book, as is fella and boy.

Princess for a girl is NOT. Hate all that preciousness about little angels and princesses. They can be right little horrors the same as boys and it just makes me think of what obnoxious little cows they will grow up to be. The sort of women who sit in a car waiting for a man to open the door for them etc.

I call my boys little man, amongst other things - I have many pet names for my boys.

Don't like tots though.

A chap in a plumbers merchants called DS1 (1yr at the time) Tiny Bloke which I thought was quite cute although I never use it myself.

pofaced · 09/10/2008 12:34

I think YANBU: I loathe "little people" and "little one" even more than "little man"... but "Littlies" is absolutely the worst.

"Boy"/ "little boy"/ "girl"/ "little girl" are just fine - they are accurate, not twee and imply some sense of irony.
