are you not meant to be working when at work?

MorningTownRide · 02/10/2008 15:30

YANBU - if your supervisor says it's ok.

If they blocked MN here I would have to do some work

PuppyMonkey · 02/10/2008 15:30

Crikey, I would have been too scared to do that actually - throw a tantrum. Have to MN in secret. Work would go a bit mad if they knew!

I do work very hard too, btw...

2beornot2be · 02/10/2008 15:32

I am supposed to work but sometimes we don't get many calls and its dead boring we are allowed to use internet at work I watch DVD's and all sorts he just did it to piss me off

All my supervisor are on mumsnet WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

YABU. You're at work.
Your supervisor might be fine with it but if it were my company I wouldn't be impressed.

BarbieLovesKen · 02/10/2008 15:46

yabu

onager · 02/10/2008 15:49

You don't work on my ISPs helpline do you?

onager · 02/10/2008 15:52

Still, if you really can't do anything else between calls they ought to let you amuse yourself.

flourybaps · 02/10/2008 15:53

well in that case then yanbu.......

Ps victoriansqualor have you been on Bounty by any chance latley? I read some of your input on early weaning threads over there..... Thought you did your best to get your point across and I for one appreciated it.......

Was all a bit crazy really, baby rice at 4 weeks as baby had 'gone off' milk was just sad to read really.

Sycamoretree · 02/10/2008 15:55

I rearranged my office so no one could see my screen from the door. If I didn't have MN at work I would die of actually having to do some work.

VictorianSqualor · 02/10/2008 15:58

yes, fb, there are MNers on there still, there is a thread that has finally been allowed to stay with some good info on it.

2beornot2be · 02/10/2008 16:03

The directors of the company I work for don't mind us using the internet as long as its not busy as I said he did it to piss me off as he made a comment to the supervisor

After my tantrum the supervisor spoke to him asked him to put it back on and if the directors had a problem with it being on could they let her know as I was not the only one having a tantrum in the office so he did do it.

Work did that to us last year. Blocked access to everything and if we needed a site for work we had to send a request and have access to that one site approved.

Lasted precisly 9 days before we were all back on Facebook etc in our breaks. The whole place must have been up in arms for them to give in so easily

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/10/2008 16:35

most of us who work, use the internet for their own means during work hours

as long as work still gets done, then dont see the problem

if anything a bit of humour from a form can make you work better imo

Ashantai · 02/10/2008 16:37

2beornot2be, i need a job at your company!!
I'm thinking if i left a bunch of 3 yr olds at nursery on their tod to come on here, it wouldnt go down too well

2beornot2be · 02/10/2008 17:24

LMAO Ashantai they have got jobs going if you live in London lol

EyeballsintheSky They blocked Facebook from our computers my tantrum didn't work then So I use to bring my laptop in with mobile broadband and sit on facebook all day but now I have found Mumsnet I don't bother with facebook.

The joys of working in a incoming call centre if the calls don't come in I don't have nothing to do :-D

I think YABU for throwing a tantrum. Whether or not your boss approves, it is a rather childish thing to do. While it might be informally approved, it's surely not a right you're entitled to?

I'm sure we've all wasted "office" time on something or other when we weren't busy, but it doesn't mean you can demand it.

I also feel for the IT guy - his job might be to stop "misuse" of office equipment, so you might be making his life difficult.

Lowfat · 02/10/2008 17:51

WOW you are lucky.

I am MNitting in secret right now as I am the only one in the office :-)

Reallytired · 02/10/2008 18:29

I'm sorry I'm with the IT guy on this one. Unless Mumsnet is directly relevent to your job then your company is well within their rights to ban it even at lunch times.

Why should people who have legimate reasons for using the internet have their link slowed down by you surfing the web. Even if it is your lunch time, does everyone in the company have their lunch at the same time as you?

Frankly you need to grow up!

Turniphead1 · 02/10/2008 18:43

Also, I wouldn't make an enemy of the IT guy. For a start - he might not help you with problems you need resolved (although sounds like you are a right dosser )

More worryingly they can look at your posts on internet sites, send emails from your account and read your email account etc.

DesperateHousewifeToo · 02/10/2008 18:43

When I used to work, for some reason, my computer had no block on it whereas everyone elses had very limited access to the www.

Unfortunately, I was always out seeing patients so never in the office to be able to idle away my time on it...and it was pre-mumsnet, I think .

Reallytired · 02/10/2008 18:52

Seriously the IT guy has ways of making your life absolute hell. Which are very sutle.

Trust me, I work in IT support. There are ways of dealing with ill mannered and dim users.

"More worryingly they can look at your posts on internet sites, send emails from your account and read your email account etc"

You are probably safe on that one. Most IT support people are far too busy to do that kind of thing. (They also don't have time for facebook or mumsnet!)

Also it is legally questionable to read someone else's email.

Turniphead1 · 02/10/2008 19:38

"Most IT support people are far too busy to do that kind of thing. (They also don't have time for facebook or mumsnet!)"

How long can it take to suggest the user turns of the computer off and on again???

loonyrationalist · 05/11/2010 13:27

Turniphead hahahaha

Seriously though 2beornot2be I have always found time invested in getting the it dept on side to be worth its weight in gold.
