to think that I should be able to enjoy a drink without a dog running about in my local?

Went out for ad drink with my mate last night to our local pub. Enjoying ourselves fine until a man appeared with a dog. The dog was given free rein of the pub, running behind the bar, into the private area behind (Where the kitchen is) and all over the place. It was going under people's tables and chairs and chasing an apple all over the place. Now this is a nice pub in a nice area and dogs have never been allowed in - there wwere also children in which is a first as they were never allowed in before. When we spoke to the barmaid (I am allergic to dogs) she said it belonged to the manager and was allowed to go everywhere in the pub!! The people behind us complained and left and we compalind twice as the blo**y thing kept coming up to us and going under our table. First of all the manaager loudly spoke about us to his mates as if we were very unreasonable. Second time he said 'sorry' but still didn't restrain his dog. I'm now really suffering with all the allergic reaction symptoms and feel really annoyed. I've fired off an email to the head office of the group which owns the pub as the manager really did not care about how annoying hs dog was being. Also for H&S and basic hygiene - they sell food FGS I think this is bang out of order. SO AIBU or not???

loads of pubs have a pub dog
I think you're being unreasonable
If you iddn't like it you could have left

PavlovtheCat · 28/09/2008 14:11

YABU, if you don't like it, go somewhere where there are no dogs allowed.

noonki · 28/09/2008 14:14

yabu - dogs belong in pubs

falcon · 28/09/2008 14:14

I wouldn't have a problem with the dog being in the bar area but it really should be under control.

AbbaFan · 28/09/2008 14:17

If it had been a mum with a toddler running about like that - you would get loads of awful looks.

YANBU

I think it's fine to have a dog in a pub if it is being 'well behaved'.

combustiblelemon · 28/09/2008 14:20

Agree with Falcon. The dog has every right to be there but should have been trained not to bother people. It sounds like the man was the real problem, not responding properly when you asked him to keep his dog away from you.

hollyandnoah · 28/09/2008 14:21

i think there are dogs in quite a lot of pubs these days. Not big chains though but small local pubs i wouldn't be surprised at seeing a dog.

PavlovtheCat · 28/09/2008 14:21

abba of course a mum with a toddler running about would get looks - \op was in the pub on a saturday night when a toddler should be in bed asleep, not in a pub...!!!

ChirpyGirl · 28/09/2008 14:21

'this is a nice pub in a nice area'

so dogs should only go in scabby pubs?
yabu and also a bit of a snob.

expatinscotland · 28/09/2008 14:23

YANBU.

Dogs don't have 'rights' like people. Because they're not people.

I wouldn't go back to a pub like that. Sounds like a shithole.

I would complain to the head office if this is chain because it probably is breaking health and safety rules.

wannaBe · 28/09/2008 14:26

yabu.

Admittedly the man should have kept the dog under control (would expect the same of mother of a toddler ) but if it's his pub and he wants a dog there it's his perogative.

Your perogative is of course to go somewhere else if you don't like it.

Health and safety only comes into play wrt the food preparation area.

What Expat said.

YANBU

combustiblelemon · 28/09/2008 14:32

The lovely country pubs I know are a lot more likely to allow pubs than the scary or scabby pubs I avoid.

combustiblelemon · 28/09/2008 14:37

Dogs that is. Not pubs. That would be silly.

Leslaki · 28/09/2008 14:42

Hey Chirpy Mum!!! Only said it was a nice pub in a nice area so you all knew that it wasn't a real scabby joint - wasn't being snobby!!!
It is a chain pub so didn't expect that and we prob won't go back - such a shame as we've been going there for 8 years and it's spoiled it now. The dog was allowed to totally invade people's space even aftyer they complained. If it had been a quiet dog snoozing by the fire and not getting in our way then fine. fact was it was alloowed to roam freely and was bounding about everywhere. Even got its teeth round someone's jacket!!!
I've emailed the chain HO anyway!
Thanks Expat and Frockhorror!

I agree with you. Many dog owners are "barking" mad themselves.
They show no consideration to those who don't like dogs.

It is a pub not a bloody kennels.
let's hope the manager gets a bollocking for his behaviour.

Yuk dog in kitchen

expatinscotland · 28/09/2008 14:49

Oh, if it's a chain I would definitely write a letter of complaint and bullet point all the problems the dog caused.

NOT ON in an place that is serving food to have dog marauding around.

clam · 28/09/2008 14:50

Sounds like the landlord's response is the main thing that would hack me off. He talked about you loudly to others? That's waht I would complain about most.
Oh, and the dog in the kitchen. And under my table.
OK, YANBU about any of it.

wannaBe · 28/09/2008 14:53

if the dog is in the kitchen then he is in breach of health and safety and I would report it to environmental health. They'll be round pretty sharpish to set him straight - could potentially even prevent him serving food for a time.

I do agree that the dog shouldn't be left to run out of control.

Scotia · 28/09/2008 15:13

YANBU - can't believe anybody really thinks you are. I agree with expat, you should contact environmental health if the dog was in the pub kitchen area.

Scotia · 28/09/2008 15:14

^^ Sorry, it was Wannabe who suggested environmental health.

TheSmallClanger · 28/09/2008 18:02

YAB a bit U, but so is the landlord.

The dog should be under control, but it lives at the pub and should be allowed to be in there. You can always go somewhere else. I would rather see a dog being daft in the pub than chained up, miserable and barking, outside.

ChirpyGirl · 28/09/2008 19:04

Fair enough!
I can see your point if it was chewing/slobbering on things, a dog walking around is one thing but a dog behaving out of control (and bounding to me means jumping on things) is another altogether, obviously had jumped to conclusions!

FfreckleFface · 28/09/2008 22:51

YABU

I love it when dogs are allowed to roam around pubs. Do you know for certain that the dog was actually IN the kitchen, or was it just running through a door that lead to the kitchen and other areas? If you don't like there being a dog in the pub, go to another pub. It's what I'd do if I didn't like the music/atmosphere in a pub I was in.
