to expect ASDA and NEXT to sell clothes for 12/13 yr olds

adelicatequestion · 26/09/2008 23:34

I went to both Asda and NEXt looking for clothes for my tall 11 yr old. She needs age 12/13 and neither NExt or ASda do them.

In next they said we had to order it from teh catalogue and pay for a catalogue. I'm sorry but if you want me to buy from you, I'm not paying twice for teh privilege.

In ASDA i was told that the adult clothes now start in a size 4 for her to chose from. These clothes are for ADults, and she is 11. I don;t want my 11, 12 or 13 yr old wearing the clothes that 18 or 19 yr olds out clubbing would wear.

What do you think. I feel like a letter of complaint coming on - perhaps a mumsnet campaign!

I'll join you DD is 8 but in 10 year old clothes so Adams is nearly out as are most age appropriate shops.
Our next have a catalogue in store and if something is in the shop and the catalogue you can order bigger stuff without paying for the catalogue and you get free delivery to store.
It is annoying though especially as shops cater for fatter kids now but not taller ones.

borofudge · 26/09/2008 23:43

I've encountered this problem too. 11 year old DD is 'a little large' Asda's 14-15 was perfect but I was told the reason they've stopped doing them is for more room to stock the size 0. It makes me angry

saint2shoes · 26/09/2008 23:46

yanbu
dd is 13 but has sn, so I like sort of younger (non tarty clothes)if they had a 12/13 it would be brill
(should we start a petition to asda?)

borofudge · 26/09/2008 23:48

I'd sign it

nappyaddict · 26/09/2008 23:52

new look and debenhams do some nice non-tarty clothes in their teenagers section.

adelicatequestion · 27/09/2008 00:10

Thanks nappyaddict.

It just makes me mad that they are taking away their childhood even more trying to make them into little adults and they're not.

I'd sign a petition. how do you do one?

I don;t want her to wear adult styled clothes, just normal jeans, trousers, nice t shirts etc.

At her age I don;t want her to be thinking about size 4, 0 or anything.

I'd be surprised if an 18 year old would wear clothes from Asda to go clubbing. I don't think you're being unreasonable though to feel that somewhere could stock suitable clothes. OTOH although I've never been tall I think that by 12 (about 5 foot and not far off my full adult height but a lot slimmer) I was probably looking at small adults' clothes in Leeds Market and in whatever shops I bought clothes in. And I imagine at 13/14 most girls won't want to be in "kids' " clothes

adelicatequestion · 27/09/2008 00:17

No you're probably right. An 18 yr old wouldn;t buy clothes from asda to go clubbing but it's the concept of adult based clothes (some of them actually looked like cardigans my nan would wear).

At 13/14 girls would want to look more trendy but my dd is only just 11 and there's a huge difference between that age and 13/14.

I also don't want my 11 year old in t shirts that say "this bitch bites" which I have seen for girls her age.

Asda's G21 section, which starts at a size 4, is actually rather nice. I have a blue zip up hoodie, a pink cardigan with stars on it, and some rather nice purple jeans from there - not at all grown-up and tarty. I would say it's actually aimed more at girls than adults.

behold the link

MrsSnape · 27/09/2008 08:29

Our Next isn't too bad (Asda don't sell anything over the age of 11). But one thing I have noticed in Next is how babyish the clothes are for teens.

I mean, we were in there last weekend and there were 'hoodies' for 14/15 year old boys with spiderman on the front! Now I'm sorry but my 9 year old wouldn't wear that, I couldn't imagine ANY 14 year old wearing it.

I do love the Next catalogue though

adelicatequestion · 27/09/2008 21:32

TTT

none of those clothes in the link are in our asda.

We did get her some stuff in Debenhams today.

pointydog · 27/09/2008 21:38

Next clothes go up to age 16 on the website. INterestingly, I have only seen up to age 12 in teh shops. Buy online if there's something you like.

SlartyBartFast · 27/09/2008 21:45

FairLadyRantALot · 27/09/2008 21:48

ShrinkingViolet · 27/09/2008 21:49

Mackays (now M and Co) isn't too bad for this age group if you pick and choose.

janeite · 27/09/2008 21:52

Clothing for children (especially girls) is a nightmare. DD1 is 13 and already 5'7" but about a size 4. We get most of her stuff in Gap (ladies' skinny jeans in the sales), Warehouse (in the sales), H&M (long sleeved T-shirts) and Zara. DD2 is 11, about 5' and very skinny but very long bodied - again, we get a lot of stuff from Gap and the odd bit from Zara. M&S used to have the occasional okay thing but their girls' wear section has got worse and worse (seems to be all High School Musical crap, or boho monstrosities a la Per Una). Next is useless.

SlartyBartFast · 27/09/2008 21:52

there is the kylie section at m and co but still nothign for boys.

pointydog · 27/09/2008 21:53

dd1 (12) has been size 6 shoes for a while. 6! ridickilous

SlartyBartFast · 27/09/2008 21:53

all this high school musical stuff is ridicuous, not every 11 year old girl likes the stuff
