To really really hate the school run

Excuse moan but...

DD1 has started school - she's settling in well and I hate it. Feels like I'm now trapped in a daily horrid commute that mainly consists of cajoling two (4 year old and 2 year old) tired grumpy hungry children across busy roads, on and off buses, carrying bags of stuff, standing around in cold playgorounds etc etc. Took me nearly 2 hours (!!)to collect DD and get home again and we're only about than a mile from the school. Can't believe I've got years and years of this ahead of me.

I know I'm BU, but am just hating it. can I blame being heavily pg for grumpiness?

Are there any other parents who live near you?

If so, organise a Walking Bus. That way, you'll get a couple of days off at least.

My friend who has just arrived from the US can't believe the effort we have to go to here to get our kids to school.

There the school bus picked her dd up as 7am and brought her back at 4.

Now she has to get two buses or face a long walk or risk cycling with a five year old. The price of the buses is mounting up too.

god, no. I hate it too. I have to put ds1 on the school bus, then drive the other 2 up to preschool and creche as they are not allowed on the bus, get them into 2 totaly different buildings simulataneously and then get into the car as fast as I can to drive to work, whilst trying not to be too abrupt to the other mums who want to chat. I loathe it.

PoppyFox · 26/09/2008 16:34

Just walk it. My dc's school is almost two miles away. TAkes 28 minutes to walk there, and five minutes faffing around at the door and then about 35 mins to walk home , so i'm the same. Over two hours of walking everyday. I'm always wrecked. Would love a car, but I think that would only be a bit quicker.

What's the answer? homeschooling? NO THANK YOU!!!

OH, I am glad others feel like this!
I am lucky as from next week DS2 will be at the CM's, so won't have the tantrum everyday when I have to get him out of the house to pick up DS1.

PoppyFox · 26/09/2008 16:40

Riven! I am awful and I count down the minutes until my dc go to school

You say you have to walk on a busy road? Is the pavement wide?Do you have a way to cross the road safely?
Because if you can answer yes to these questions you ABU.
I only live 1 mile away from the school.
I would LOVE to walk to school, catch a bus even and cross the road in safety.
We do not have any of that.
Horrid narrow winding pavement, mad lorry drivers, 50mph road with NO CROSSINGS for over 3 miles!
And even taking the car is dangerous as it is on an uneven crossroad junction so that drivers have to turn in front of each other and at the same time some nutters think it's reasonable to squeeze past on the inside.
Loads of accidents but the council won't do anything about it as only one person was killed in the last 5yrs.
I HATE the school run, it's a nightmare, i'll swap with you.
Oh,yeah and we don't have any buses either.

nappyaddict · 26/09/2008 17:05

dd1 could bike it and dd2 could trike it?

staranise · 26/09/2008 17:18

Walking both ways will be better I guess, once sciatica is gone and presumably DD1 gets more used to it/bigger. Agree I need to be more ruthless re. routine and getting up early. Driving to school not an option, neither is moving closer, though I can but fantasise about winning the lottery and being able to afford one of those houses on the street next to the school gates.

Thanks for replies and sympathy, am sorry other people hate it too though must admit, misery loves company...

and it is friday and thanks to my being sofa-bound, DH is home early

Haven't read the whole thread. Options - walking (when you feel up to it)/taxi/long term - getting a car(learn to drive)/move nearer/friend/relative do pick ups/drops off some of the time/childminder????

Hope you get it sorted, does sound crap.
